Hot on the heals of the New York Film Critics Circle's announcement yesterday, the National Board of Review has named their picks for the best achievements in film for 2014, naming J.C. Chandor's crime drama A Most Violent Year as the year's best movie. The film also won for Best Actor (Oscar Isaac), tying with Michael Keaton for Birdman, and Best ing Actress (Jessica Chastain).
Awards season kicked off this morning with the New York Film Critics Circle Announcing their year-end awards, with the major victor being Richard Linklater's Boyhood, an incredible portrait of a young boy growing up from ages 5 to 18. The film took three awards total: Best Picture, Best Director (Linklater), and Best ing Actress (Patricia Arquette). Boyhood's victory here was one that was highly expected and is sure to be the first of many for the film, which is the highest rated film of the year, currently sitting at 99% (9.4/10) on Rotten Tomatoes and maintaining a score of 100 on Metacritic.
We all knew it was simply a matter of time, but at long last Warner Bros. has finally announced the details of the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: Extended Edition.
Actress Maisie Williams has been garnering recognition and critical acclaim for her role of Arya Stark on HBO's hit fantasy show Game of Thrones, but despite being incredibly busy with the show for a large part of the year, she has also found time to take on roles in a few small films, including Heatstroke, which was just given a limited release on July 4th.
Love him or hate him, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson is a big name in the movie industry, delivering such action blockbusters as Resident Evil (and a few of its sequels), Mortal Kombat, The Three Musketeers and, most recently, Pompeii.
This past Sunday saw the return of what can easily be called one of the greatest shows on television, Game of Thrones. In the season premiere, the series continued its streak of excellence by getting us reacquainted with nearly every character and even introduced us to a new face or two, including Prince Oberyn Martell (The Red Viper) and the new Daario Naharis. We even got a taste of the badass that little Arya Stark is becoming as she continues her travels with The Hound.
We're less than a day away now from the premiere of the first trailer for Jonathan Liebesman's live-action reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Everyone has been eagerly anticipating the first official glimpse of what the turtles will end up looking like when they hit the screen. While we still don't have a full-on shot of our beloved green heroes, today has seen a couple of official images from the film leak online, one of which gives us a pretty good look at what appears to be Raphael smashing into a car.
With less than two weeks left to go before the return of HBO's hit show Game of Thrones, we're still receiving little pieces of marketing that will no doubt lead right up to the premiere of the fourth season. We've already had a number of posters, trailers, and stills, but as any fan of the books and/or show could tell you, more is always a good thing.
My fellow award buffs, we have come to it at last. The 86th Annual Academy Awards are underway, putting an end to what has been the strangest awards season I can ever recall in all my years of covering the race. Not only have we seen continuous Best Picture/Best Director splits among a multitude of groups, we've also been left with an unprecedented tie from the Producers Guild of America between Gravity and 12 Years a Slave.
With just a little over a month to go before HBO's Game of Thrones returns to television for its fourth season, the marketing machine is in full swing. Up to this point, we've gotten two great full-length trailers, multiple production stills, and several behind the scenes images, but the network isn't quite done yet.
