Man Of Steel Blu-Ray Review
Zack Snyder's Man of Steel is the gritty and realistic take on Superman that we've all been waiting for. Well, not really. It's part of the new wave of dark superhero origin stories that has been on the rise ever since Christopher Nolan dropped Batman Begins on us. Man of Steel mostly benefits from the new approach, allowing us to see the birth of the character through an entirely different light. Unfortunately, as promising as the concept sounds, Snyder's strong and moving direction is a poor match for David S. Goyer's limp script. Man of Steel is a good summer blockbuster that boasts impressive effects and a strong lead, but most of the ing cast is dwindled down to nothing as Goyer's script tries to cram in as much action as possible, leaving the ing characters to suffer.

Pacific Rim Blu-Ray Review
Visionary director Guillermo del Toro has finally made it to the front lines of the Hollywood studio system with Pacific Rim, his largest-looking and definitely most expensive film to date. Pacific Rim is perhaps the perfect summer blockbuster, engaging the audiences with a film that's all about massive scale and scope, yet never forgetting about what counts the most -- the characters. It is one of the largest and most destructive popcorn flicks that I've ever seen, yet it remains grounded thanks to layered characters and an actual story that's full of emotion and heart.

World War Z Blu-Ray Review
Marc Forster's long-delayed big budget adaptation of the hit novel World War Z isn't the film we were all expecting to hate on, yet it still barely gets by as a PG-13 generic zombie film with some decent thrills and action. Brad Pitt carries what would have otherwise been a complete disaster of a film, due to his on-screen charisma and likability to carry a film of this caliber across the finish line. World War Z isn't a great film by any means, but it is a surprisingly decent one, thanks to Forster's endless budget, which allows this to be the biggest-looking zombie film yet. World War Z is a globe-trotting action film, with zombies playing more of a visual role than a physical one and for that it's still worth checking out.

Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-Ray Review
Star Trek Into Darkness is J.J. Abrams' big and loud sequel to the highly entertaining Star Trek reboot. With Star Trek, Abrams was able to please longtime fans, while also entertain a whole new audience, thus creating a new summer blockbuster to get behind. Star Trek Into Darkness is Abrams learning nothing as a filmmaker and simply revisiting moments that worked in the first film, while regressing in of character building. Into Darkness has bigger and better action, but it sacrifices what little smarts this new series had for popcorn-munching sci-fi that's far from intelligent. Still, Star Trek Into Darkness is a fun summer blockbuster, even if it's a little dumb at times.

Now You See Me Blu-Ray Review
Louis Leterrier's Now You See Me is the latest sleeper hit to surprise the audiences with more than a hat full of magic tricks. It's a slick and fast crime caper that plays out in ordinary fashion. While the quick pacing and smooth core cast makes for an amusing watch, the film unfortunately suffers from a disastrous ending that leaves the whole thing feeling like nothing more than a cheap magic trick. Now You See Me is 3/4th's a good film, weighed down heavily by a crumbling third act that absolutely crushes all of the movie's good graces laid out beforehand.

The Great Gatsby Blu-Ray Review
Director Baz Luhrmann has been known for making visually pleasing and heavily stylized films, which simply means that he was born to eventually direct the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic The Great Gatsby. And boy does he direct it; filling the film with lush photography and a general grand presentation that turns the timeless classic into an epic on-screen event that absolutely must be viewed in 3D. Unfortunately, The Great Gatsby also suffers from a director going overboard with his visual flare, while not focusing enough time on the film's numerous detestable characters, played with a varying range by Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire.

Oblivion Blu-Ray Review
TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski's latest "original" sci-fi film Oblivion is a disappointing failure of the highest order. Tom Cruise is mostly wasted in a film that does nothing more than show off its expensive budget and fancy set pieces. Oblivion is far from original, often-times stealing from previous genre efforts entirely and rarely ever constructing an idea or thought of its own. Kosinski has grown as an action director, but fallen flat on his ass when it comes to writing a script with interesting concepts and characters that serve a purpose that's bigger than highlighting one of the film's impressively-shot action sequences.

The Place Beyond The Pines Blu-Ray Review
Derek Cian's latest drama The Place Beyond the Pines is a towering achievement for the young filmmaker, quickly becoming the year's best film by a landslide, thanks to Cian's epic scope, pacing and lasting direction that leaves the film sitting with you long after it's over. Ryan Gosling provides another top-tier performance, as Bradley Cooper finally delivers "the one" that we've all been waiting for, plus a dozen scattered ing roles that range from surprisingly good to downright impressive. The Place Beyond the Pines is absolutely perfect.

Brian Helgeland's 42 is a serviceable biopic for one of the most important baseball players of all time, Jackie Robinson. 42 isn't as deep as it should be or nearly as interesting as it could have been, but it does a good job getting across one of America's most important sports figures, thanks to Chadwick Boseman's performance and Helgeland's understanding of how to assemble specific scenes to elicit a strong emotional reaction from the audiences.
