Myself, I am pretty staunchly “pro-color” when it comes to movies. I would dare to wager that most of the moviegoing public share this popular stance with me. Color films have dominated the cinematic landscape for quite some time I would say. Yes, I do believe that color is here to stay.

Myself, I am pretty staunchly “pro-color” when it comes to movies. I would dare to wager that most of the moviegoing public share this popular stance with me. Color films have dominated the cinematic landscape for quite some time I would say. Yes, I do believe that color is here to stay.

A bit of an odd trend this year, however, is the decision by filmmakers to shoot in black-and-white. Black-and-white movies tend to be rare, limited to films that are specifically designed to harken back to an era in which the technology had not yet allowed for color to be used cheaply enough to be universal.

Recent movies like The Artist and Frankenweenie were made to reflect an era of film they meant to reference. Reaching a little further back, George Clooney’s Good Night and Good Luck shot black-and-white to give his Edward R. Murrow story greater authenticity and authority.

It’s been a while since more than one title in a movie year has attracted attention for deciding to shoot in black-and-white but in 2013 alone, there have been 6 movies released in monochrome, and they’re all worth watching, in their own way.
