Today we have our first look at Pele, an biopic about the titular Brazilian soccer legend written and directed by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist. Those names might not sound familiar but the duo was behind the fantastic 30 for 30 documentary The Two Escobars, so their familiarity with the sport should lend itself well to this project.

Widely regarded as one of greatest to ever play the sport, Pele is still a major figure in in the soccer world and the film looks to chronicle his entire life.

Check out the plot summary below:

PELÉ tells the miraculous story of the legendary soccer player’s rise to glory from a young boy to the 17 year old player who scored the winning goal in Brazil’s first ever World Cup victory in 1958.  From a life full of disadvantages and an impoverished youth in Brazil, Pelé used his unorthodox yet authentic style of play and his unbeatable spirit to overcome all odds, find greatness and inspire a country that he changed forever.

Though the two actors who will play Pele at different ages are unknowns (Leonardo Lima Carvalho and Kevin de Paula), the rest of the cast includes some recognizable faces. Vincent D’Onofrio will take on the role of Feola, Brazil’s World Cup coach, while Diego Boneta will star as Pele’s friend and arch-rival Jose. Seu Jorge will show up as Pele’s father and Colm Meaney is stepping into the role of George Raynor, the Swedish World Cup coach. Rodrigo Santoro is also listed among the cast, though no role has been named for him as of yet.

Pele is currently in production with an eye towards a late 2014 release, which will ensure that it qualifies for awards consideration. Are you looking forward to the film? Are you a fan of the legendary soccer player? Let us know in the comments below.
