In 2018, A Quiet Place became an unexpected horror hit thanks to John Krasinski’s confident direction and the film’s somewhat unique concept of a world ravaged by blind creatures extremely sensitive to sound. While it’s fun to question how people would adapt to a permanent gag rule, A Quiet Place became an instant classic because it rightfully focused on the layered relationships of a family trying to rebuild their life after the end of the world. The sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, struggled to find the same balance, often putting worldbuilding ahead of character growth.

As a prequel set on the day when meteors brought savage aliens to Earth, there was a risk that A Quiet Place: Day One would depart from the formula and lean too heavily into explaining how the apocalypse came to be. Instead, Day One doubles down on everything that made the franchise’s first chapter so memorable.

A Quiet Place: Day One revolves around Sam (Nyong’o), a terminal cancer patient living her final days in a hospice. With nothing to expect from the future besides the cold embrace of death, Sam is trying to make the most of her remaining time. That’s why she agrees to the hospice patients on an excursion to a theater in New York City so that she can grab a slice of proper pizza. Alas, fate is not kind to Sam, as the meteor shower that brings the alien invaders coincides with her city tour.

The fact that Sam is dying when the apocalypse begins gives her a unique perspective on the chaos spread by the alien creatures. There is an obvious parallel between Sam’s health condition and the danger represented by the creatures. Although humans like to think they are masters of their own destiny, life has a funny way of disrupting plans, causing accidents, and ending one’s journey long before they are ready to face the curtain’s closing. Sam’s cancer has forced her to face this uncomfortable truth, which is why her goals and desires remain mostly the same even when long-armed beasts are introduced into the equation.

While the script of A Quiet Place: Day One lacks genuine surprises, the movie still feels fresh thanks to Sam. Usually, post-apocalyptic stories are all about survival, which also leads to explorations of the dark pits of human nature. However, Sam is already past the point where survival is the most important thing, even before the cataclysmic event that sets the movie’s events into motion. As such, Day One becomes a surprisingly touching story about facing mortality on your own and finding meaning and companionship even in the worst possible situations. Yes, that’s right. While New York is under siege and buildings collapse left and right, the prequel prefers to be optimistic, an unusual — even if welcome — choice for post-apocalyptic media.

By rewinding the clock, Day One can also explore aspects of the franchise A Quiet Place never could. The original duology is all about a family capable of using sign language who are predisposed to help each other in their time of need. In Day One, everyone is a stranger learning to deal with the aliens on the go, without years of experience. Each person who crosses Sam’s path represents a new challenge, as she must find ways of communicating without alerting the alien hunters. In some ways, then, Day One demands a lot more of its cast, who must convey complex messages using gestures and facial expressions.

The limitations of Day One when it comes to speech quickly become one of its biggest strengths, as Nyong’o uses every last drop of her talent, which is saying a lot. Her career is filled with magnificent performances, which already granted her an Academy Award for Best ing Actress for 12 Years a Slave. If there was justice in Hollywood, the role of Sam would give Nyong’o at least an Oscar nomination. Sadly, her snub after Jordan Peele’s Us doesn’t allow us to be hopeful.

Nyong’o is not the only one to shine in A Quiet Place: Day One. Despite having a comparatively smaller role, Joseph Quinn as Eric is also a sight to behold. Traveling alongside Sam through the rubble-filled streets of New York, Eric allows her to confront the situation she’s in with an honesty that wouldn’t be possible if she were alone. Every interaction between Sam and Eric is worthwhile while also serving as a reminder that humans only reach their full potential when in a community. So, while Nyong’o is unquestionably the star of the show, Quinn helps elevate her presence on the silver screen, and at the same time, he leaves his mark on the franchise.

In addition to Nyong’o and Quinn, special praise must be given to Nico and Schnitzel. Never heard of these actors? Well, that’s because they are cats. The feline team impersonates Frodo, Sam’s pet, who follows her during the movie. The presence of a pet already increases the emotional stakes of a film because we are programmed to fear more for the fate of fluffy things than that of our kin. Nevertheless, even disregarding the intuitive appeal of adding a pet to a post-apocalyptic plot, Frodo is an actual character in A Quiet Place: Day One, with his own personality. Sam’s cat is a scene-stealer, and the fact that Day One managed to give so much charisma to a cat is impressive in itself.

There are some areas in which Day One is blatantly inferior to the first A Quiet Place. For starters, director Michael Sarnoski doesn’t use silence as effectively as Krasinski, who directed the original duology. That’s not to say Sarnoski is worse than Krasinski; they just have different styles. Still, since sound is so important for the franchise, it’s easy to notice the absence of more quiet moments.

The prequel is also tasked with expanding the lore of A Quiet Place, laying the groundwork for whatever A Quiet Place Part III turns out to be. Unfortunately, the lore gets in the way of the emotional development of Eric and Sam, as if it were an afterthought shoved into a movie it didn’t quite belong to.

Finally, Day One’s dramatic ambition comes at the cost of horror. The prequel is the least scary movie in the franchise, which will probably disappoint some fans. Part of the blame also falls on the reused creatures, which become less threatening the more we see and understand them.

In short, A Quiet Place: Day One is a flawed movie, for sure. Yet, it’s a beautiful addition to the franchise that serves as a new and exciting entry point for newcomers. Plus, Nyong’o’s performance alone would already be enough to justify going to the theater.

Once that’s done, the system generates your horror story, and shortly after a narrator reads it. Unfortunately, I decided I’d hide under my bed, but a smartphone notification from a message from my editor (I knew my deadline was due yesterday) gave away my location, and now I’m afraid to walk around my apartment.

No matter what I typed, the site seemed to know exactly what I’d like to do with a specific item or in a certain scenario. For example, when I said I’d fight back with a gun, and that shot would probably make the aliens aware of my location, I got an eerie and detailed tale of how I knew the risk but had no other choice than to fight back.

There are, obviously, some slip-ups. For example, when I wrote I’d be in Berlin on day one, my generated video actually showed shots of Paris. In another go, instead of running through my hometown in Poland, I was actually in New York, which was actually flattering. But I guess that’d be the last thing I’d care about if I found myself in that situation. Or, maybe, in an alternate universe, Germans just copied the Eiffel Tower. I mean, when compared to aliens attacking Earth, this scenario doesn’t feel too weird.

Contrary to the first two parts in the franchise, Quiet Place: A Day One tells an entirely different story. Instead of following Emily Blunt and John Krasinski’s characters in the countryside, it shows what happened on the first day of attack in New York City.

Recently, the world got a brief look at Adam Driver in a new and mysterious movie with science-fiction elements titled 65. Now, a full look at the feature has been unveiled and it is taking the Star Wars veteran into a Jurassic world built by A Quiet Place alums.

A trailer for the film to be distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing began circulating online today. It starts with Driver’s Mills giving a log after crashing a transport ship filled with people on an exploratory mission. From here, he issues a call for help, notes the planet he is on has breathable air, finds a young female survivor and, then, at night, they come face-to-face with a huge T-Rex.

Just how the film will reconcile Driver and Ariana Greenblatt existing when our world was 65 million years removed from how it is today remains to be seen. Later shots in the footage include Driver promising his young charge they will get home as dinosaurs attack the remains of his ship, hiding in confined spaces and being dragged off into the darkness by some smaller dinosaur types.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods of A Quiet Place fame wrote the piece and also co-direct it and Sam Raimi is on board as a producer. Several online are intrigued at the idea as of this story’s filing, though, for one fan, the title does not match up with actual history.

The 65 movie will make its way into cinemas March 10. It was originally set for 2022 but got four delays.

Accompanied by a young girl in what looks to be a life-threatening situation, we hear a low growl from an unseen beast before Driver opens fire on it with a rifle straight out of the future.

The film’s description doesn’t reveal anything beyond Driver’s character, an astronaut, crash-landing on a planet that houses what we can only assume are bloodthirsty inhabitants, and while we probably won’t be getting any solid answers until tomorrow, we predict that dinosaurs are somehow involved in the mix, with the film’s title being a possible reference to the 65 million years that have ed since the dinosaurs were wiped out by the Chicxulub impactor asteroid.

Horror’s resurgence in the 2010s can be put down to new and original properties hitting cinemas, with franchise films being mostly ignored as a breath of fresh air went through Hollywood.

Among those which took horror back in a mainstream, and blockbuster, position of the world was A Quiet Place. John Krasinski’s directorial debut was much-loved by critics and mainstream audiences, but remains a sore subject for more diehard fans of horror films.

With its excellent premise hinging entirely on “do not make a noise,” it’s currently seeing voices raised on Reddit as fans work out why hardcore horror fans just never got into it.

A Quiet Place’s position in the horror genre is perhaps tenuous once you really start looking at it, with it arguably more of a thriller than outright horror. Krasinski himself is noted as saying he was never a fan of horror until he made one, and it’s one which is definitely not as bloody as the usuals. Some commenters called it a de-fanged version of horror, made to allow for mainstream interest.

There are still definitely some really horrific moments in the film, with it having a level of incredulity to its main characters surviving or going through truly terrifying situations. Of particular note is the silent childbirth scene at the end of the film which feels like it could be right out of a David Cronenberg movie.

Perhaps, like one commenter pointed out, it’s a crossover point similar to Jurassic Park or even some aspects of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. Terror is instilled in both of those movies with visuals straight out of horror, but again, de-fanged. Regardless of A Quiet Place’s horror status, it’s worth noting how well-made the film is.

A Quiet Place’s overall reception critically is worth noting, with a 96 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes; putting it ahead of other 2018 horror films like Hereditary, Annihilation, and Halloween.

The success of the film is still being felt, with further sequels and spin-offs coming out of Krasinski’s original film. A Quiet Place is available to stream on Paramount Plus.

While Paramount’s Star Trek struggles to get back on the big screen, the studio without any superheroes is humming along nicely with its A Quiet Place series. The soon-to-be-trilogy series is getting a prequel in the not-so-distant future and now, Lupita Nyong’o is reportedly on board for A Quiet Place: Day One, a chronological predecessor to the original film about the earliest days of the blind and brutal alien invasion saga.

News of her purportedly being in final negotiations was reported earlier today by Deadline. The project, set to release in 2024, is from Pig director Michael Sarnoski and comes from an original idea by John Krasinski. There is little known about the film right now aside from the fact that, while not out of the question, it is not likely Emily Blunt or Krasinski will be reprising their roles.

The core franchise is receiving a third film, which is on track for 2025. Krasinski will be returning to direct, and the concept has proven to be a hit. A Quiet Place Part II was the first post-pandemic theatrical-only release. It opened to $57 million, has earned about $300 million worldwide, and is a critical hit. Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producers and Krasinski and partner Allyson Seeger at his Saturday Night label are executive producers. A video game is also in the works. It will be in the same continuity as the films, will come from Saber Interactive, and is reportedly going to tell an original and untold story in the world.
