<![CDATA[

On the evening of May 17, 2025, the Mexican Navy’s training ship, the Cuauhtémoc, a large and impressive sailing vessel on a worldwide goodwill mission, crashed into the famous Brooklyn Bridge in New York City in a tragic accident. The collision broke all three of the ship’s masts and led to the deaths of two crew while injuring nineteen others out of the 277 people on board. 691o5i

Although the Brooklyn Bridge itself only suffered minor damage, the event has brought up serious concerns about how the crash happened and what factors may have contributed to it. The Cuauhtémoc, a 297-foot-long ship first launched in 1982, was on an important journey planned to stop at 22 ports in 15 different countries.

Its trip began in Acapulco, Mexico, on April 6, and it had reached New York City on May 13 for public tours and events. According to The Independent, the ship’s route included visits to Kingston, Jamaica; Havana, Cuba; and many other international locations, showcasing its role as a symbol of Mexican naval strength and global friendship. This voyage was also a training mission for naval cadets, making the accident even more significant due to its impact on their education and the Navy as a whole.

The Mexican Navy ship did not crash into the Brooklyn Bridge on purpose 632p17

It was not because of the Mexican Gulf rename. Instead, eyewitness reports and video recordings show a troubling scene in the moments before the crash. As you can see from the videos here, the Cuauhtémoc was seen moving backward at high speed as it neared the Brooklyn side of the East River. Even though a tugboat was nearby, a mechanical failure, specifically a loss of engine power, is thought to have left the Cuauhtémoc unable to steer away from the bridge and caused the accident.

The ship’s tallest mast was 158 feet high, far exceeding the bridge’s 135-foot clearance at its center. This height difference was a major reason the impact was so severe. The force of the crash caused the ship’s masts to break apart, sending debris falling onto the deck and leaving several crew hanging dangerously from the damaged rigging. A large rescue operation was quickly launched, involving emergency responders and the Coast Guard.

The injured sailors were taken to nearby hospitals, and a detailed investigation was started to determine the exact cause of the accident. While the loss of power is seen as the main reason for the crash, investigators are looking into whether other factors played a role. These could include mistakes in navigation, poor communication between the ship’s crew and the tugboat, or even weather conditions at the time. The investigation will review the ship’s maintenance history, navigation charts, communication records, and weather data to fully understand what happened.

The bridge was recently part of the House of the Dragon promotion, but it will likely be ed for this.

The investigation will also evaluate the training and procedures of the ship’s crew, especially how they responded to the loss of power and their attempts to avoid the bridge. The fact that a tugboat was nearby, usually there to help with maneuvering, suggests there may have been coordination problems or that the tugboat could not stop the collision despite its presence. The full investigation into the cause of the crash is expected to provide important lessons on preventing similar accidents in the future and improving maritime safety rules worldwide.

If you'd rather not face the parade crowds, check out the best movies and shows to watch on St. Patrick's Day.]]>
<![CDATA[

There’s nothing quite like St. Patrick’s Day when it comes to celebrating all things Irish. And there’s no doubt that many of us will be taking part in some of the many rituals that have sprung up around the holiday — especially in the States, where entire cities practically shut down for the annual parade, entire rivers are dyed green, and schoolchildren are pinched within an inch of their lives for forgetting to “wear the green” on March 17.

But many of us aren’t really feeling the parades (or the day-long marathon of drink that often goes with it). If you’re an introverted type with a bit of Irish in you, there’s still a way of celebrating without waking up the next morning thinking you’ve been cursed by the little folk. Instead, you can adhere to some of the most intense horror movies out there.

So cook up some corned beef and cabbage or shepherd’s pie, grab a delicious and tall glass of fresh Guinness, and curl up in front of your TV as we explore our list of some of the best Irish movies and TV shows to celebrate St. Pat’s with.

Once 2i25d

Once went on to inspire a musical but the source material is an absolute treasure of a small film. The story focuses on Guy, played by Glen Hansard, a vacuum repairman and street musician, and Girl, a Czech immigrant flower girl who also aspires to be a singer-songwriter. The pair begin collaborating and fall in love and then they begin to break your heart. The film is mostly music, with each song describing another point in the burgeoning romance. If you want to sing on St. Patrick’s this is your film — as long as you don’t mind a bit of ugly crying as well.

Waking Ned Devine 4456

This comedy classic was a hit in the ’90s but remains an undiscovered gem for many in the States. A farce with a uniquely Irish bent, Waking Ned Devine tells the story of a group of friends who conspire to split up the winnings of their dead friend’s winning lottery ticket amongst their fellow townspeople. When a National Lottery Inspector appears to make sure the win is legal, everyone must conspire to keep the money in the town – to hilarious effect.

Puffin Rock 2z5930

You don’t have to be of drinking age to celebrate St. Pat’s! Families with wee ones will love Puffin Rock and its adventures of a family of puffins living on the titular island off of Ireland’s north coast. Made by Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon, the series is voiced by a mostly Irish cast and narrated by The IT Crowd‘s Chris O’Dowd.

Moone Boy 6t3z7

Speaking of O’Dowd, don’t sleep on Moone Boy, the series he co-wrote and starred in for Sky One. O’Dowd stars in the semi-autobiographical comedy and plays Seán Caution Murphy — the imaginary best friend of the protagonist, 12-year-old Martin Paul Moone — who is growing up in County Roscommon in the rural West of Ireland in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Martin copes with life through his enormous imagination and his drawings, which come to life through animation.

The Secret of Roan Inish 6z724u

If you want to explore the mystical side of Ireland and don’t want to put up with the insanity of another installment in the Leprechaun franchise, check out The Secret of Roan Inish. The story focuses on the legendary selkies — seals that can shed their skins to become human — and a girl named Fiona who is sent to live with her grandparents and cousin in a small Irish fishing village near the island of Roan Inish — supposedly the home of the selkies.

The Commitments 3i45s

Want to inject a little soul into your St. Pat’s celebration? Look no further than this perfect marriage between Dublin working-class angst and Motown soul of the 1960s. Northside Dubliner Jimmy Rabbitte is a young music fanatic who places an advert in the local paper seeking to form an American-style soul band. As the band assembles, the motley crew of working-class players negotiate the pitfalls of fame as they begin to become the most popular act in town.

The Secret of Kells 4j1d49

The Secret of Kells might be the most Irish of all the movies on this list, combining Irish history, mythology, and an incredible animation style inspired by the Celtic illumination of The Book of Kells, a medieval manuscript of the four gospels. As the Irish prepare for a Viking invasion, 12-year-old Brendan is recruited by a master script illuminator to help complete the magical book. Brendan must seek aid from the fairies that dwell in the forest and befriends a young fairy, Aisling. But can she help him complete the book in time to repel the invasion?

Derry Girls 3z1u4z

Derry Girls follows four Irish girls (and one English boy) trying to lead a semblance of a regular teenage life, while also growing up in the shadows of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. But it has little in common with the other fraught representations of the era. Derry Girls became Channel 4’s biggest hit in years when it came out in 2018 and the show has gained international success now that it’s available on Netflix. And it’s definitely worth the hype, easily one of Netflix’s funniest offerings.

The Guard d5m21

If you care to indulge in some of the black humor the Irish are world famous for, look no further than The Guard. Resolutely politically incorrect Gerry Boyle, played by The Banshees of Inisherin‘s Brendan Gleeson, an officer of the Garda Síochána national police, finds himself teamed up in an unlikely pairing with FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) in an effort to track down an international cocaine ring. Darkly hilarious and often profound, this Irish take on the buddy cop genre manages to rev up from one to eleven in its third act and will have you laughing and cringing all along the way.

Brooklyn 4m6l5h

Part romance, part immigrant experience, Brooklyn is an underrated sleeper that captures the bittersweet interior struggle of wanting the opportunities of a new life while longing for the sweetness of home. Saoirse Ronan plays Ellis Lace – a young Irish immigrant living in 1950s Brooklyn yearning to return to her family and her hometown of Enniscorthy when she finds herself entangled in a new romance. This heartstring-puller brilliantly depicts the experience of having your heart torn between the future and the past.

Films about immigration to America all too often rely on the same tired clichés: about immigrants struggling to come to the new world, only to discover that the streets are not paved with gold or even properly paved, or about immigrants already here, faced with that peculiar American brand of discrimination, ghettoization, and fragmentation. Usually someone turns to crime, the old country beckons (or follows), and the family begins to disintegrate under the weight of the new American world. Thankfully, the romantic-drama Brooklyn, which comes out on Blu-ray this month, fulfills none of the stereotypes of its predecessors. Not that Brooklyn doesn’t start out with certain element of cliché. The lovely Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) departs her small Irish village for the wonders of 1950s Brooklyn, where she encounters a very different world from the one she left behind. With the help of a kindly priest (Jim Broadbent) and the occasional of new friends, Eilis begins to adapt to the strange new country. She eventually comes out of her shell and begins to make friends, including the acquaintance of charming Italian plumber Tony (Emory Cohen), with whom she falls (tentatively) in love. But when a tragedy sends her back to Ireland for a month, she becomes more than ever torn between two very different countries and futures, offered by two different men. Brooklyn is more about internal drama than external; Eilis does not encounter any of the regular forms of discrimination so usual in dramas about newly arrived immigrants. But she is a sheltered young woman in an unfamiliar world, homesick not so much for her village and family as for the safety and familiarity that they represent. Almost everyone around her wants to help, to greater and lesser degrees, but Eilis’ conflict plays out within herself, with what she truly wants versus what others around her want her to want. The film doesn’t shy away from the complexity of these issues, giving its characters room to grow and change without forcing inorganic shifts on them. The fact that the viewer does not always approve of Eilis’ behavior – and that the film doesn’t ask that – is testament to the quality of the narrative. Brooklyn Brooklyn’s greatest strength is in Saoirse Ronan’s central performance, for which the actress justly received an Academy Award Nomination. Ronan conveys the conflict of Eilis’ life without recourse to overdramatic emotions, relying instead on subtlety and a nuanced understanding of a young woman trying hard to make her own life while fully aware that she’s beholden, in one way or another, to many different people. Her romance with Tony is gentle and charming, so much credit goes to Emory Cohen for his sweet performance of a basically loving man. The rather late-in-the-day appearance of Domhnall Gleeson as Jim Farrell adds to Eilis’ conflict, but thankfully avoids the cliché of forcing the viewer onto one side or the other. Jim is also a decent man, just a different one, and Eilis’ conflict over her feelings is buoyed by the fact that both men are “good” men who deserve consideration and respect. The ing cast likewise maintains the tone and energy of the film, although I rather felt that Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters were a trifle underused in their small parts. Despite hints at stereotypes and clichés (the nosey landlady, the friendly Irish priest, the expansive Italian family), Brooklyn and its cast gives its characters complexity and humanity. The Brooklyn Blu-ray is attractively rendered, with a palette that brings out the vibrancy of the 1950s color schemes and the more subtle gradations of grey and green in the Irish scenes. Special features on this disc include the usual director’s commentary with John Crowley and a gallery of on-set photos. Six short promotional featurettes with titles like “Home” and “Love” feature the cast and crew discussing various aspects of the production and filmmaking process. Deleted and extended scenes rarely add much more to the final film than runtime, but they’re always interesting to watch; those on this disc include an optional commentary by Crowley, which greatly adds to an understanding of his process and reasons for eliminating various sequences. I’m always pleased to see that films like Brooklyn can still be made and become popular today. It feels like a throwback to a more classical form of filmmaking and storytelling, a tale about personal drama rather than grand and sweeping emotions and national conflicts. There is no violence and no massive tragedies; the tragedies are all personal, the conflicts internal, the emotions real and subtle. The Blu-ray release allows the viewer a chance to experience the drama of Brooklyn in a more personal way than a theater can, and for that reason alone I suggest you pick it up.

Brooklyn-2 Despite having arrived in cinemas just two months ago, the award-winning film adaptation of Colm Toibin’s novel, Brooklyn, is now set for further development – this time as a television series with the BBC. The news that the newly Oscar-nominated producers of Brooklyn – Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey – are heading up this fresh adaptation is an interesting development, given the nature of the book and the film. The novel, Brooklyn, is set in the 1950s, and follows the story of Eilis Lacey – a young Irish woman who leaves her mother and sister, and their small village, to travel to Brooklyn and start a new life. Her older brothers have already left the town and are working away, and her gainfully employed sister remains in the family home to stay with their mother. For Eilis, a local priest has arranged a job and accommodation for her in New York City, and she embarks on a journey into a foreign land, as much as into adulthood and independence. When events begin to unfold on both sides of the Atlantic, however, Eilis is trapped between her past and her future. The film adaptation is penned by Nick Hornby, directed by John Crowley, and necessarily creates a greatly pared down version of the narrative. A vast amount is ejected – including the existence of the brothers of Eilis – in favour of a more focused dramatic arc. The synopsis of the film is as follows:

Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.”

Perhaps it is the case that the cut material from the novel has influenced the decision to further develop the title into an episodic format, since a great deal more of the story can be explored – although writers have yet to be hired. The announcement of the Brooklyn television adaptation indicates that the focus will be on the Brooklyn boarding house of Ma Keogh – played in the film by the incomparable, award-winning Julie Walters. This character was indeed the brightest spot within the film, and would easily anchor a show in which young Irish, British and American women rotate through the accommodation – including Eilis Lacey. Given the female-centric nature of the plot, it would be heartening to see some women writers and directors hired for the project. In of casting, Saoirse Ronan is not expected to reprise her Oscar-nominated role as Eilis, but Julie Walters is confirmed as returning as the formidable and hilarious landlady. The prospect of UK national treasure Walters appearing in a BBC production is always something to be excited about – and in this case, she has already demonstrated excellence in this particular role, making this Brooklyn TV series one to watch for.

As we inch closer and closer to awards season, one film that you’ll surely be hearing about is the deeply moving and impressively acted Brooklyn. Following an Irish immigrant who lands in the titular city during the 1950s, the movie stars Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson, and has been attracting a fair amount of buzz during its run on the festival circuit.

Our very own Zachary Shevich caught the film in Philly not too long ago and had the following to say about it:

Led by an impeccable Saoirse Ronan, the earnest 1950s-set Brooklyn weaves an enchanting love story into the tale of an Irish immigrant’s American assimilation.

Back when Brooklyn landed at the Toronto International Film Festival, we had the chance to attend its press day, and while there, we caught up with both Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson. The two stars discussed with us their personal connection to the story, how they were able to relate to their characters and much more.

Check out they had to say in the video above and be sure to catch Brooklyn as it’s now in theatres.

Led by Saoirse Ronan, the earnest 1950s-set Brooklyn weaves an enchanting love story into the tale of an Irish immigrant's American assimilation.]]>
<![CDATA[

Period-set love stories typically suffer from stiffness. The genuine emotions evoked by romance and heartache become muted under era-appropriate dialog and layers upon layers of Victorian-era clothing. Sometimes the stories themselves are so distant from the contemporary idea of courtship that a mishandled romantic subplot can feel completely unnatural, bearing no semblance to modern love. All the production design can choke the life out of a movie. Thankfully, resonance is never an issue for Brooklyn, a new tender, ethereal film that blends a 20th century love triangle with the story of a young Irish immigrant coming to live in the United States. Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) immigrates to New York in the 1950s, leaving behind her family and trading in one shop girl job for another. Exiting the doorway at Ellis Island, she’s enveloped in a dreamlike, glowing white light. America is a hopeful place for Eilis, but it’s also overwhelming. Screenwriter Nick Hornby (An Education, Wild) – author of the novels About a Boy and High Fidelity – follows in the tradition of other cautiously optimistic stories of assimilation like Avalon or In America. These films feel less like dramas, comedies, or romances, and instead fall somewhere pleasantly in between genres. Like Avalon or In America before it, Brooklyn creates a world full of textured characters that help to build a sense of place and time. At the center of the story is the genuinely sweet Eilis. She moves into a boarding home for Irish girls run by the delightfully wry Mrs. Kehoe (Julie Walters), and occupied by a pair of gossipy unmarried women. She’s an understanding character full of concern for others, which endears her to those around her. Saoirse Ronan is instantly likeable in her timid and kind performance. She plays Eilis as overly amenable, deferring to men and women who are stronger willed, but holding strength beneath that comion. It’s an ideal role for the soft-spoken 21-year-old Irish-American actress. Ronan’s own career is in the midst of a transition from the roles that defined her youth (Atonement, Hanna) to a future of lead, adult roles. Likewise, Eilis is caught between her youth and the prospect of adulthood. Once in America, Eilis has lost the safety net of her family, crying as she reads a letter from home. Ronan guides the character through a believable, gradual transition into a self-assured, independent woman. Her’s is one of the best female performances thus far into 2015. Eilis is finally able to open up in the warm presence of Tony (Emory Cohen), an Italian plumber who shows up to Irish dances for the girls. He’s forward, but not a cad. On walks home or when he invites Eilis over for dinner with his family, Tony’s sweet, ive demeanor allows Eilis to grow comfortable both with him and in her new surroundings. She goes from the butt of the joke in her boarding home, to envied by her housemates. Their palpable chemistry makes this lovely romance believable. Director John Crowley smartly keeps emotions abated, as Brooklyn slowly swells in its emotional second half. As Eilis is forced to return to her family in Ireland, it adds obstacles to her burgeoning American life. Further complicating matters is a thoroughly charming Domhall Gleeson, who provides Eilis with good conversations and the comfort of returning home. Crowley and Hornby carefully choose to not tip their hand, instead letting the audience deliberate alongside Eilis. Hornby’s script, adapted from the Colm Tóibín novel of the same name, beautifully articulates feelings of alienation, loss, love and hope. Brooklyn’s Eilis is not just a girl to be wooed, but rather a woman looking for her place, whether that’s in America or Ireland. She’s so easy to empathize with because she shows endless empathy for others. Thankfully, Ronan’s stellar performance is both textured and moving, leading one of the most sincere and uplifting films of the year.

For those in attendance at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of the year, one film that rose gracefully to the top of the pack was John Crowley’s Brookyln. And now, as we stand on the verge of Oscar season, Fox Searchlight has debuted a heart-wrenching new trailer for the drama that firmly cements its place as one of this year’s surefire contenders. While we hope that Crowley’s period piece is recongized in as many categories as possible, perhaps the one acting as a safe bet at this early stage is Saoirse Ronan getting the nod for Best Actress. Playing the part of Eilis Lacey, Brooklyn sees our protagonist leaving the Emerald Isle behind to carve out a life for herself in the title city. Torn between her newfound love in the Big Apple and yearning for the taste of home, Ronan’s Eilis is caught between the concrete jungle and the rural outback, raising the question: which does she really consider home? Fox Searchlight has planned to release Brooklyn for a limited run beginning November 4, 2015, with the film gradually opening in additional cinema chains in the weeks to follow. In the interim, you can familiarize yourself with the leading characters using the gallery below.

Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950’s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

Perhaps no other title at this year’s Sundance Film Festival screamed Oscar quite as loudly as Brooklyn, John Crowley’s tale of a young immigrant torn between her home world and the new life she’s trying to carve out for herself in America. Saoirse Ronan stars in the pic, adapted from the book by Colm Toibin by Nick Hornby (High Fidelity), as an Irish immigrant trying to balance a new love and an old life while combatting the struggles of survival in 1950s New York. Emory Cohen, Domnhall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent and Julie Waters co-star. Reviews out of Sundance were rapturous, with particular praise going toward the moving story, Ronan’s emotive lead performance and the evocative cinematography, so it would be no surprise to see Brooklyn pop up in the awards mix closer to the end of the year. From what we’ve heard, few films this year have arrived as perfectly formed. The pic doesn’t have a set release yet but it will be coming this fall.
