Darksiders Genesis provides a short burst of demon-crunching carnage for hardcore fans of the franchise, but the overall experience is easily eclipsed by other, deeper, more engaging action-RPGs.]]>
<![CDATA[

The Darksiders franchise clearly has an identity crisis. On one hand, I find it refreshing that THQ wants to take each installment and do something different with it. On the other, you get a sense that the folks behind this weirdly enjoyable series spend more time chasing trends than honing a specific genre. The original Darksiders remains my favorite of the entries to date, followed closely by the second. Darksiders III, an attempt at a Dark Souls-esque adventure, missed the mark by a long shot. It also suggested that perhaps the team behind Darksiders should perhaps find a genre that suits the stories they want to tell and commit to it for the long haul. Again, kudos to all involved for at least trying something different. That’s awesome. 1l3i5p

Because we have a Darksiders game, the latest installment of the series, Darksiders Genesis, has opted for yet a different genre to tell its story about the End of Days and the men and women who play a role in it. However, instead of a behind-the-shoulder third-person adventure game of differing complexity and difficulty, THQ and developer Airship Syndicate have opted for an isometric action-adventure that has more in line with popular action-RPGs like Diablo and Torchlight than their previous endeavors. And while Genesis definitely works as a very basic action-RPG, it doesn’t offer anything that would lure newcomers to the Darksiders franchise. It’s about as basic and straightforward as they come, and that’s kind of disappointing.

First, let me say that being a Darksiders fan helps round off Genesis’ rougher edges; when Strife or War — the characters you can switch between during your 10- to 15-hour adventure — found themselves stuck behind a rock or trapped in geometry, I appreciated the fact that I live in a world where people continue to make Darksiders games. And when mountains, pillars, and various structures obscured my view of the action (and ultimately got me killed), I’d smile, shake my head, and say, “Oh, Darksiders. At least I have yet another tale in a sweeping epic that only a few odd individuals on this planet seem to care about.” Because I do genuinely enjoy the Darksiders saga, so much so that I hope Strife ends up with his very one mainline Darksiders entry. He’s got that Deadpool swagger that deserves a proper entry, though I have a feeling that’s wishful thinking on my part.

Speaking of our heroes, War and Strife’s story feels like a buddy-cop comedy from the 80s and 90s: While War doesn’t mess around and remains grimly serious about completing their quests, Strife tends to take a more laid-back approach to the missions, cracking wise and goofing around every chance he gets. The dynamic has its charms, for sure, though it definitely borrows heavily from the aforementioned buddy-cop playbook we’ve read countless times before. Instead of using this dynamic to try something a little different — I am, however, aware of the inherent limitations of the buddy-cop formula, but I digress — the developers of Darksiders Genesis opt to the take the path of least resistance. The jokes, while amusing, don’t move very far beyond the “Strife is edgy and cool, War is serious and humorless” variety, though fortunately, you won’t have to spend a lot of time with character development and exposition. No, Genesis wants you to wreck stuff.

Darksiders Genesis Screenshot

Almost mercifully, this Darksiders prequel focuses strictly on running, gunning, and slicing. Sure, you’ll pause between levels for a bit of idle banter that pushes the story forward, but for the most part, you’ll spend the majority of the game destroying demons and doing some mild platforming/puzzle solving (read: pulling levers and using bombs to blow up obstacles) as you navigate the adventure’s 16 chapters. None of them feel particularly long or challenging; in fact, if you’re at all familiar with isometric action-RPGs from the past decade, you’ll have no trouble jumping in and tearing through the levels. Even those who haven’t played an action-RPG before shouldn’t have much trouble here. Outside of maybe one or two boss fights, Genesis doesn’t provide much of a challenge. I wouldn’t call it a casual game by any stretch, but hardcore action-RPG fans might feel a little slighted by the simple levels and milquetoast enemies. In fact, I realized I hadn’t touched the game’s creature core/mod system until I’d almost finished chapter five, and I started to wonder if it would add anything to the experience. My exploration stemmed from curiosity, not a necessity.

Turns out, creature cores just make the game even easier. And in addition to these modifications, which will boost your attack, health, and wrath, you can also upgrade other aspects of War and Strife to make their journey through this frequently hellish (and occasionally chilly) landscape less stressful. Then again, if you understand the basics of crowd control and know how to dance around the map, you won’t need very many of these upgrades. You can spend as much time with this aspect of Darksiders Genesis as you want; for the sake of this review, I didn’t feel the need to grind for souls (the game’s in-game currency) to unlock every aspect of my heroes. If for some reason, I felt the need to take each character to the very peak of their abilities, I could easily transform them into full-blown demon-destroying horsemen in just a few short sessions. Of course, that doesn’t sound the least bit appealing, since I feel I’ve already seen everything Genesis has to offer.

Darksiders Genesis Screenshot

Although I don’t like to mention price when I’m reviewing a game — because, in my humble opinion, it’s difficult to assign a specific amount to a piece of interactive entertainment, and it’s not really my place to do so — it’s nice that THQ hasn’t assigned the same price point to Genesis than it did to the previous installments. That’s because this prequel, while enjoyable in its own right, feels a little short on content. Unless you want to replay the same levels over and over again to grind out your character, the replay value isn’t particularly high. While the other Darksiders game felt like complete experiences, this often feels like a nifty idea albeit incomplete idea. Since the game sports tight controls, good gameplay, and more of that patented Darksiders tomfoolery, I ultimately wanted more. If you’re expecting a full-course dinner instead of a snack in-between proper meals, pay attention to that price. It’ll tell you everything you need to know.

Unfortunately, Darksiders Genesis’ greatest sin is that it’s a just good game — and that’s it, nothing more. As fun as it is at times, Genesis doesn’t do nearly enough to set itself apart from other, more engaging action-RPGs that are vying for your attention these days. Unless you’re a hardcore Darksiders fan or you’re just looking for something to do while you’re in-between longer, more in-depth games, Genesis doesn’t have much to offer. While I did enjoy my time blasting through hordes of demons, listening to Strife crack wise with War, and experimenting with the creature core system, it ultimately didn’t stick to my ribs. I wanted it to have the depth of Grim Dawn, but alas, that’s a problem that seems to plague the entire Darksiders franchise. All of the games provide serviceable albeit forgettable experiences that you can find in better titles. In essence, you enjoy a Darksiders game while you’re playing it, but as soon as the experience comes to an end, it immediately disappears from your mind. Genesis, unfortunately, is just more of the same.

Despite opening its doors in 2005, comic book artist Joe Madureira’s Vigil Games didn’t bring anything to market until 2010, when it unleashed the original Darksiders unto the world. A debut effort worth celebrating, it did a great job of mixing God of War-inspired combat with the puzzle solving and large-scale exploration of a game like Zelda, with an interesting story to boot. However, as is sometimes the case, the mash-up’s release window did it no favours, given that Platinum’s beloved Bayonetta launched in close proximity and took the brunt of gamers’ attention.

As someone who played through both of those titles at release, I’ve always held the opinion that Darksiders didn’t get the attention it deserved, and that it still doesn’t. Sure, it has a fanbase and was enjoyed by those who played it, and while I may be in the minority in saying this, I honestly thought it was a lot better than its competitor. Vigil Games’ effort really nailed what I was looking for at the time, and has stuck with me ever since. As such, I was happy to hear that THQ Nordic decided to give it the treatment it deserved, by remastering and re-releasing it as Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, years after its decent but not as good sequel underwent the same process.

Bringing things like 60 frames-per-second gameplay, 4K resolution (on the PS4 Pro) and noticeably improved assets to the table, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition promises a lot. And, thanks to the power of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, its developers have delivered, by honouring the under-appreciated gem with one of the better remasters we’ve played. Add in an incredibly fair and, quite honestly, surprising $20 USD price tag, and you have something that all fans of both action/adventure and hack n’ slash gameplay cannot overlook.

If you’re new to the fold, or have only spent time with Darksiders II – which happens to be different from its predecessor, taking the form of a much more dungeon and loot-heavy experience – here’s the gist.

As the story goes, the creation of the world’s third kingdom (that of Man) spawned the development of the Charred Council – a group of mysterious and almost god-like overseers whose Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse act on their behalf. Created to keep peace in the battle between Heaven and Hell, and to help protect the weak but cunning human race from those who may threaten it, the Council oversees a system of seals. You see, so long as the several seals remain intact, everything is okay and there’s no need for intervention. However, in time of conflict or great distress, the seals’ breakage signals an emergency and calls the Horsemen to action.

At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work.

The beginning of Darksiders‘ lengthy, action-packed and wholly entertaining campaign takes us to earth and highlights one of our major cities, which is under attack from something man has never seen before. Blazing asteroids are falling to the surface at an alarming rate, many are dying and monstrous creatures threaten not only our lives but everything we’ve ever built. Destruction seems imminent, and our race’s days look to be numbered, as angels battle demons and fire erupts from destroyed buildings and annihilated roadways.

It’s into this chaos that War enters, carrying with him an epic sword and the ability to transform into a powerful demon-slaying beast. Summoned by broken seals, he’s there to do his job and attempt to stop the madness that threatens the Kingdom of Man. Or so he thinks.

ds1_4k_screenshot_10

As it turns out, the seals were not broken and remain intact, meaning that our long-haired and cloaked hero travelled to Earth under false pretences. Despite the madness, it wasn’t his place to interfere, even though the clouds separated and angels and demons took their ages old conflict to the streets. For this, War is chastised by the Charred Council, who seek to punish him before he suggests that something isn’t right and proposes a trip back to Earth for investigative purposes.

Begrudgingly, the Charred Council agrees to this return proposition, but does so with a caveat. That is, the fact that he must not return alone, and must be chaperoned instead, by a dark and slithering creature known as the Watcher. An ally, of sorts, he’s there as an agent of the Council, and can offer tips that aid the player’s progression.

From start to finish, Darksiders‘ story remains interesting and unique, and fits in well with the gameplay that surrounds it. However, while there’s a quality plot to be found here, the best thing about this experience is its combo-infused action.

As one progresses through this game, they’ll learn a multitude of new combos and abilities, and add to War’s basic form. There’s his hulking sword, which has lots of combos available for purchase, as well as his brother’s scythe, which helped make Darksiders II‘s combat so engrossing. Other mechanics – like guns, brief flight, a hookshot and a hulking form change – also factor into the fracas, helping War not only deal with his enemies but also reach new heights. You’ll want to take advantage of them, too, because the world is full of secrets, including hidden chests and medallions that can be traded with the demonic shopkeeper for helpful surprises.

darksiders-4k-review-790x444

While some of these tools are earned through progression, or by defeating epic bosses while on foot or aboard War’s helpful steed, a large amount must be purchased from Vulgrim, the aforementioned arms dealer. It’s he who you’ll visit whenever you want to upgrade, by purchasing new combos, health upgrades or specific weaponry, and it’s not money that you’ll want to bring him. No, Darksiders and Darksiders: Warmastered Edition use a system that turns souls into currency, making combat a necessity. With kills come souls, and with souls come the ability to become an even greater badass than you normally would with quest-based items and upgrades.

When it comes to presentation, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition impresses, outside of some relatively minor screen tearing. In fact, it’s easy to tell that work was put in to not only make it run on the current suite of consoles, but to make it shine as well, thanks to noticeably improved textures, effects and models. Although you’ll be playing a game that’s closing in on seven years of age, it doesn’t feel it like a lot of others tend to. The combat is still fresh, the world remains interesting and it’s hard not to smile as you pummel your way through hundreds of beasts in epic fashion. The voice acting, and storytelling, also continue to impress, thanks to Joe Madureira’s writing and the pipes of actors like Mark Hamill, Phil LaMarr, Troy Baker and Liam O’Brien.

At the end of the day, those who’ve played Darksiders at least once needn’t be told why the Xbox One, PS4, PC and Wii U are better for it. Not only is KEIKO’s Darksiders: Warmastered Edition an impressive remastering of a very good game, but it’s also an absolute steal at its current asking price.

This review is based on the Xbox One version of the game, which we were provided with.

<![CDATA[

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, a spruced up version of the original announced by THQ Nordic earlier this year, will include 4K by way of Sony’s PS4 Pro, the studio has announced. Originally released back in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the hack and slash title follows the trials and tribulations of War – the first Horseman of the Apocalypse.

Accused of inciting a war of, quite literally, Biblical proportions, War sets out on a quest of “vengeance and vindication” across a post-apocalyptic Earth, all the while being hunted by both angels and demons.

While PS4 Pro owners get the added benefit of being able to play Darksiders in 4K, there’s a range of improvements being made to the re-release on all platforms, including native 1080p , a doubling of texture resolutions and rendering enhancements. Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will run at 60fps, with the Wii U limited to 30.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is due to release on Xbox One and PlaytStation 4 on November 22 and PC on November 29. No release date has been set for the Wii U version.

A sequel to the original – Darksiders II – was released in 2012 by THQ shortly before the studio closed its doors. Nordic Games later acquired the rights to the series, rebranding itself as THQ Nordic.

darksiders-II

With the collapse of THQ and a disappointing reception to Darksiders II, many weren’t expecting the series to survive, even when the rights for it were acquired by Nordic Games GmbH. However, according to series artist Joe Madureira, Darksiders isn’t quite six feet under yet.

In a post on his Facebook page, the artist explained what was going on with the series quite directly:

Darksiders, DS is not dead!!! The new owner Nordic seems very committed to continuing the series. As far as my involvement, I can’t say at this point. Hopefully we will all have exciting news about the franchise soon!!!!!”

There’s not much else to take away from this post, other than the fact that Madureira is very enthusiastic about the series and that Nordic Games GmbH didn’t acquire the rights for nothing.

While there is nothing concrete to go on yet, I, for one, would be very interested in seeing Darksiders return. Despite being a mishmash of several different games, the series featured a unique world and art style that made it one of the stand-out franchises of the past console generation. The shuttering of former developer Vigil Games is unfortunate, but I’m sure other developers would be more than willing to take their own stab at the franchise.

Tell us, would you be interested in returning to the world of Darksiders? Sound off below!

Shortly after THQ’s initial bankruptcy auction ended with an astonishing zero bids for the Darksiders brand, Crytek chief executive officer Cevat Yerli seized the opportunity and opened up Crytek USA Corp. in Vigil Games’ (the developer behind the two game series) home city of Austin, Texas. Former Vigil lead David Adams was brought in to run the division as CEO, and the studio was quickly filled with multiple ex-Vigil employees.

With Crytek USA now up and running, David Adams has expressed his intent to go after the Darksiders IP to bring it “home” to the people who created it. Speaking out on his Twitter yesterday, Adams stated:

“Going to bid on Darksiders IP. Put 7 years of heart and soul into that franchise, and I think it belongs at home with its creators.”

Vigil co-founder Ryan Stefanelli later confirmed the Tweet with Destructiod, saying “When the Darksiders IP goes up for auction, Crytek will be bidding for it. Not much more to say since the rest is left up to courts and legal shenanigans, but we’re all excited at the prospect.”

THQ’s final auction for their remaining property rights starts on April 1, 2013, with interested bidders required to submit their final bids on April 15th. Once the bidding has ended THQ will meet with their various creditors to determine the the highest and best bid for each lot, and then proceed with the sale after the Court gives final approval. If all goes well, and Crytek USA ends up winning the bid (which consists of Darksiders and Darksiders II), the brand should be fully under their control sometime in May.

While I’m certainly in favor of Darksiders staying with the studio that created it (regardless of what they are currently called), it should be noted that this does not mean fans should expect Darksiders III at any point in the near future, as Crytek has already stated that a third game in the series “doesn’t fit” with their current strategy.

We will keep an eye out for the results of THQ’s final auction next month and let you know if Crytek USA is successful in acquiring the Darksiders IP.

While the bankruptcy auction for THQ‘s assets resulted in the bulk of their more popular intellectual properties finding new homes, there were still plenty of brands that were left in limbo as bidders ignored them outright. It was understandable why some of these IPs were left untouched (did anyone really think that there was going to be a huge bidding war over uDraw?), but several others like Red Faction, and Darksiders were a bit harder to comprehend. At the time THQ noted that there would be a separate process to sell off those remaining assets, and today they have finally announced the details for the second auction.

The company noted that they have received over 100 “expressions of interest” in purchasing various brands, so it should be interesting to see where all the chips fall once bidding has ended.

Vigil Games’ 2010 action adventure game has players take control of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as he rides through what is left of New York in an effort to clear his name and reset the balance of power in the struggle between Heaven and Hell. Darksiders‘ gameplay is often described as a mix of God of War and The Legend of Zelda, which is not all that far from the mark.

In addition to the Instant Game Collection update, PlayStation Plus will also be able to grab a 50% discount on Stardrone Extreme for the Vita, making the unique space-flight title a mere $2.

Outside of the free and discounted games, the PlayStation Store has also been updated today to version 1.02. This update is reported to have greatly speed up the insanely long load times that have plagued the PS Store since it was revamped last November.

Unfortunately, I can not personally confirm that the 1.02 update has fixed the PS Store’s horrid load times. I did notice the update when logging onto the old PS3 this morning, however, there was no time to check it out as I was on an extremely time sensitive mission to beat two of Sound Shapes‘ Death Mode levels before reporting in to the WGTC field office.

Sadly, today’s PlayStation Store patch did not bring with it the web browser version of the store that was promised for release in North America sometime later this month. Assuming Sony launches it the same way they did in Europe, it will hit in the middle of the night with little to no warning.

We will keep an eye out for any announcement regarding the launch of the browser version of the PlayStation Store — on the off chance that Sony decides to promote it — and let you know as soon as anything turns up.

I’m not sure what Death seems to have against people with two arms. Seriously, check out the trailer below. Sure, he’s doing all of his regular jump-around-and-hit-people-with-sharp-objects routines, but every chance he gets he just saws the arm right off of somebody. Hell, I’m not even sure he was trying to kill a few of these guys, he just wanted to make it hard for them to eat corn on the cob the right way again. But then again, we’re talking about Death, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. I don’t suppose he really pointers on how to properly destroy his foes. I just promise you this, when Darksiders 2 is released on August 14th, I promise to be a kinder, gentler Death. Less maiming and more outright killing. After all, I think it’s what he would want.]]>

According to THQ‘s CEO, Brian Farrell, Death will ride in on August 14. That is brand new launch date for Darksiders II, which just so happens to be one of my most-anticipated games of the year. You will probably recall that the apocalyptic sequel was delayed from its previously-announced June 26 release date, in order to give its development team some extra polishing time.

Companies have been busy analyzing their progress during fiscal year 2011, and THQ is no different. The cash-strapped publisher actually made the above-mentioned announcement during yesterday’s investor call, stating that Darksiders II was delayed as a “demonstration of our commitment to quality.” After spending some time discussing its options with retailers, the company deemed that “mid-August is a more favorable release window.” That makes sense considering the relatively quiet summer release window that we’re steadily approaching. However, Death will have to battle with Sleeping Dogs on that mid-August day.

If you’ve yet to play the original Darksiders, then you owe it to yourself to do so before its sequel arrives. That game has to be one of this generation’s most underrated and overlooked gems. As a result, I sincerely hope that the same fate will not befall its successor, because the fine folks from THQ need a successful release to help right their ailing ship. Thankfully, Darksiders II‘s pre-orders are quintuple that of its predecessor.

Darksiders II may not be headed to our favourite gaming platforms on June 26 after all. Its release on that surprisingly popular early summer day is in jeopardy, as recent THQ statements to RipTen have indicated that the game may need more time in-development. During the site’s interview with THQ EVP Danny Bilson, one of the publisher’s other representatives commented, saying that the company is “honestly” unable to confirm whether the title’s release date will stick.

Bilson’s response was also ambiguous:

“We haven’t announced anything… but the team is working really, really hard. We’re not going to ship it before it’s done.”

Keep in mind that an official statement has yet to be made, so it’s possible that Darksiders II may still launch on June 26. However, the aforementioned comments make it seem unlikely. It’s a shame that what looks to be one of the best releases of this year might be delayed, but I’d rather play a polished game than one which needed more time in the shop.

Darksiders II will be released onto Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on June 26. It has also been confirmed as a day one launch title for the Nintendo Wii U.
