We're not saying they're all winners, but there are some live action gems.]]>
<![CDATA[

Netflix might not have the best track record for producing live-action anime adaptations, but that hasn’t stopped the media giant from trying. The company has produced 17 to date, but its collection includes a rotating catalog from other media giants.

This list is purely alphabetical. If you’re looking for a ranking of the best live-action anime adaptations so far, don’t worry, we’ve got that covered too. Netflix’s original adaptations start this list off, and any of those hosted titles that trade out regularly come at the bottom — but , not to take this list as up-to-the-minute! We do our best to keep these articles up to date, but we’re still human. Make sure to double check those titles are still on Netflix before making some popcorn, grabbing your Pocky, and settling in.

All Netflix original live action anime adaptations 4w3g4o

Alice in the Borderland 601u4g

Alice in Borderland is an ongoing Netflix’s adaptation. Season 3 has finally been confirmed, and fans could not be happier. The series follows Arisu, a video game obsessed man who is teleported to a desolate version of Tokyo where he and plenty of others must play dangerous games to survive.

Bleach 702n

Bleach trailer

Ichigo Kurosaki is just a normal, paranormally blessed teen until he meets the injured “Soul Reaper” Rukia. After she looses her power saving Ichigo and his family, he has no choice but to take up her blade to stave off evil spirits known as “Hollows.” The flick might not have been up to fans’ standard, but the visuals in Bleach still make it a decent ride.

Cowboy Bebop 2a4n3d

Cowboy Bebop trailer

Cowboy Bebop will might have failed to live up to fan expectations, but that doesn’t mean the single season romp can’t kill some time. The Space-Western follows Spike and his crew of bounty hunting misfits as they make their way through the galaxy hunting down violent criminals. It might bring a dose of nostalgia for any fans of Firefly, but die hard followers of the anime were not impressed.

Death Note 1k6g1z

Deathnote trailer

2017’s Death Note kicked off Netflix’s run of bad adaptations. The flim tried to cram too much information into too short of a time slot. The story follows Light Yagami, a despondent teenager who finds a Death Note, a book that will kill anyone whose name is written on the page. Despite the negative reception, a sequel is allegedly in the works.

From Me to You: Kimi ni Todoke 2z7

From Me to You trailer

From Me to You aired in 2023, and unlike many of the other entries on this list, it stays surprisingly close to the source material. The coming of age romantic comedy follows Sawako, or “Sadako,” as her classmates call her, an unintentionally scary and gloomy girl. When she befriends Shota Kazehaya, a boy who doesn’t care what others think, her life starts to turn around.

Fullmetal Alchemist 5d1hs

Fullmetal Alchemist trailer

Look, I cant say anything nice about Fullmetal Alchemist. Okay fine, the visuals are decent, and the costuming is there, but the show just lacks the heart of its inspiration. When Edward and Alphose Elric attempt a taboo form of Alchemy, Ed is left maimed and his brother’s body is destroyed. The two search for a way to restore their bodies, but evil forces are at work all around them.

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar 2d5n3t

Fullmetal Alchemist The Final Alchemy/ The Revenge of Scar trailers

After their misguided first entry, Netflix returned with The Revenge of Scar. The story continues with the Elric brothers battling the mysterious Scar, a man with a vendetta against State Alchemists. Fans and critics praised the visuals, but yet again, felt the film lacked heart.

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Alchemy 5r3t6m

Fullmetal Alchemist The Final Alchemy/ The Revenge of Scar trailers

The Final Alchemy and The Revenge of Scar were released at the same time, so Netflix never had the chance to pull the plug. The film picks up right wehre The Revenge of Scar left off, and wraps up the trilogy with more CGI than the average DC flick.

The Ingenuity of the Househusband r5x4s

The ingenuity of the Househusband trailer

The Ingenuity of the Househusband is a collection of webshorts centered on a former Yakuza turned homemaker. Kenjiro Tsuda stars as himself, and after playing the role of Tatsu in the inspiration, The Way of the Househusband, he’s got it down pat. The shorts show him conquering daily problems with tough-guy charm and a homemaking perfection even Martha Stewart would be jealous of.

Kakegurui 3m1a2x

Kakegurui trailer

As far as faithful adaptations go, Kakegurui is one of the best. The live-action is splitting the anime season in half for the sake of coherence — but although aspects are rearranged, the core story beats are alive and well. The prestigious Hyakkaou Private Academy might might seem like the perfect school, but in reality it’s ruled by a vicious hierarchy of gambling-obsessed students. Students play for keeps with not only their money, but the lives and futures of any debtors.

Mob Psycho 100 6i4q6j

Mob Psycho 100 trailer

This mini-series follows Mob, A psychic middle schooler who just wants to live a normal life in a city filled with ghosts and weirdos. Created by ONE, the mastermind behind One-Punch Man, though unfortunately, the adaptation is missing much of the humor that makes ONE’s stories so unforgettable. There’s a reason the fandom has swept this adaptation under the rug.

One Piece 336u51

ONE PIECE trailer

One Piece is, without a doubt, the best adaptation Netflix has made to date. The visuals are stunning, the cast memorable, and the story, though moving at its own pace and hitting different beats, has maintained its heart. Luffy and his band of misfit pirates set sail across the Blue to find the fabled ONE PIECE, in a swashbuckling adventure you just have to see to believe.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final 1a182w

Rurouni Kenshin: The Finale trailer

Rurouni Kenshin is technically a 5 part movie series, but Netflix only outright own the final 2 films. 1-3 may cycle through their library at any given time due to their deal with Warner Bros, but don’t expect to see them on the site regularly. The Final takes place after the third movie, The Legend Ends. This film adapts the anime’s final arc, and has some intense action as well as beautifully choreographed fights.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning 3z2r41

Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning trailer

The Beginning goes back to long before Kenshin met Kaoru and made a new life. It’s a much more somber version of the sweet boy fans grew to love, and features some grittier fights. The prequel was meant to be watched once viewers had finished the series, but it really doesn’t matter — either way, you’re going to get hit right in the feels.

Yu Yu Hakusho 1g216s

Yu Yu Hakusho teaser trailer

Netflix’s latest adaptation, Yu Yu Hakusho learned from its predecessors’ mistakes. The series follows Yusuke Urameshi, a troubled teenaged buy who defies expectation by sacrificing himself to save a child. He’s granted magical abilities and promised a second chance on the condition that he become a Spirit Detective and unravel a plot that goes all the way to the top in both the human and demon worlds. Critics and fans alike have praised the visuals, directing, and most of all, that so-hard-to-master anime tone.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead q316h

Zom 100 trailer

Zom 100 MC, Akira, is a hopeless youth working a corporate job determined to suck the life out of him. When the zombie apocalypse hits, Akira seizes the day and starts living his best life free of work. It’s silly and lighthearted, and definitely borrows some of the Sharknado franchise’s levity.

Hosted adaptations 2q3964

Netflix’s catalog of hosted content is constantly shifting, so make sure not to take this list as law. The following titles are on Netflix as of the time of this writing, and we’ll do our best to keep it up to date!

Initial D 6o2v6e

Initial D trailer

2005’s Initial D might have split critics and audiences down the middle, but most fans of the anime agree that it royally screwed the pooch. The film follows a mild mannered tofu delivery driver, Takumi Fujiwara, who has love of late night street racing. The story melds aspects of the story and frustrated fans with its pacing, but delighted audiences with the screaming tires, incredible drifts, and hot-rod action.

Knights of the Zodiac 492n5u

Knights of the Zodiac trailer

Knights of the Zodiac hit theaters in 2023, but the film was more of a whisper than a roar. A blend of Greek mythology and martial arts, the story follows the street orphan Seiya, who discovers that his latent abilities are the only thing capable of saving the reincarnation of the goddess Athena.

Rurouni Kenshin 1f4b2z

Rurouni Kenshin trailer

2012’s Rurouni Kenshin is a fictional historical drama that follows Himura Kenshin, a Meiji Era assassin known as the Hitokiri Battōsai. The legendary swordsmen has long since given up on violence and become a wandering samurai but his past will never die. After meeting Kaoru Komiya, a young kendo teacher, the two must defend her home from a man claiming to be the Battōsai. This film is just one of 5, but Netflix is currently borrowing the title from Warner Bros.

What would it take to beat the hero?]]>
<![CDATA[

We’ve all seen different power sources in anime over the years. Whether they may be devil fruits, chakra, or quirks, they’re always present in Shonen anime – but One Punch Man may just be the odd one out.

The perennial debate to determine the strongest anime character will never end, but one thing’s for certain: Saitama from One Punch Man is an undeniable frontrunner. And what, you may ask, is his power? Nothing more, nothing less than his mighty punch. His unwavering determination, coupled with his unparalleled physical prowess, has earned the Shounen protagonist the distinction of being one of – if not the – strongest characters in the entire anime realm.

Since Saitama’s introduction in 2009, everyone’s been trying to identify a worthy opponent in a one-on-one battle. You may think it’s an impossible task, but I’m here to show you that several characters could potentially outmaneuver the bald hero, even if it is through some dirty tricks.

Alluka (Hunter x Hunter) 5z585y

Alluka and Nanika from Hunter x Hunter
via Crunchyroll

Let’s start with Alluka from Hunter x Hunter. Naturally, she possesses absolutely no Nen ability, and in a one-on-one encounter, Alluka would have no chance against Saitama (though I’d argue he’d hesitate when it comes to punching a cute and innocent 13-year-old). Still, she is arguably the strongest Zoldyck, all due to her Nanika power that grants someone else any wish, as long as that person fulfills her own desires three times in a row. On the other hand, if someone were to deny her, they would simply implode into bits.

If she were ever to become involved with Saitama, it could go both ways: Either he would deny her wishes four times and not live to tell the tale, or Killua – the only one who can effectively tame and control Nanika’s power – could simply wish for Saitama’s demise. However unlikely this scenario may be, I believe that under the right circumstances, Saitama could indeed be defeated by Alluka, Nanika, and consequently, Killua.

Zeno (Dragon Ball) 1w2b3a

Zeno Dragon Ball
via Crunchyroll

Arguably, one of the few characters capable of defeating Saitama in a fight would be none other than Zeno from Dragon Ball. Throughout the course of Dragon Ball, we’ve witnessed Zeno obliterate several universes and planets in fits of anger. He’s quite literally the God of Gods in the Dragon Ball universe. Plus, given the anime’s unbelievably limitless power scale, Zeno isn’t even the sole character in the series who could potentially overpower Saitama in combat.

The debate regarding whether Goku would triumph over Saitama has also been a long-standing discussion. On the whole, he probably would. While we’ve seen Goku lose and even die in battles on several occasions, his character has consistently faced formidable foes who would undoubtedly prove stronger than Saitama as an adversary. For this reason, it’s safe to assume that Dragon Ball‘s immensely overpowering world would be evident in a confrontation with the bald hero.

Light (Death Note) 182h37

Light Yagami from 'Death Note'
Image via Madhouse Studio

Death Note is one of the anime that gets a free against Saitama, with a little trick up its sleeve. If Light were ever inclined to eliminate Saitama, they wouldn’t need to engage in a physical confrontation. Instead, all Light would have to do is write down Saitama’s name in the Death Note, ensuring his demise right from the outset. In essence, Light wouldn’t even have to risk a face-off with Saitama’s devastating punch, since a direct encounter wouldn’t be necessary.

Similarly, Ryuk, the God of Death, would also easily outmatch Saitama due to his Shinigami powers. Ryuk can manipulate death using the Death Note and steal lifespans, in addition to being immortal himself. Comparable to the situation with Alluka and Killua, this implies that Light could only beat Saitama through the utilization of the Death Note and Ryuk’s abilities.

Sugar (One Piece) 4t1p63

One Piece Sugar
via Crunchyroll

There are quite a few Devil Fruit wielders in One Piece who could undoubtedly match Saitama’s abilities (if we’re talking about a fight though, that notion can surely be argued), but Sugar is one of the characters who would likely secure an easy victory against Saitama. While a punch could undoubtedly end the confrontation, Sugar ate the Hobby Hobby fruit, which bestowed upon her the power to transform anyone into a living doll and erase their existence from everyone’s memories.

Ultimately, as long as she remains conscious, the power will continue without cessation. This implies that unless someone intervenes in her ‘fight’ with Saitama, the protagonist of One Punch Man would likely have to adapt to living as a powerless doll. He wouldn’t even be able to persuade Genos to defend him by attacking a child, since Genos wouldn’t recall his teacher’s existence. Quite the advantageous loophole.

Anos Voldigoad (The Misfit Of Demon King Academy) 46424t

The Misfit Of Demon King Academy
via Hulu

While Saitama’s determination may be strong against several types of espers and other supernatural creatures, I hardly believe that would be the case with Anos Voldigoad. The Demon King of Tyranny from The Misfit Of Demon King Academy is certainly a worthy opponent for Saitama, especially if you expect him to win. Not only is he immortal, reincarnating himself time and time again (only challenged by the destruction of the source), but a snap of his fingers is enough to completely obliterate a person, even Saitama.

In fact, one could argue that for Saitama to have a chance, he would need to get sufficiently close to land a punch on Anos. However, as we all know, that attempt would likely prove futile, merely delaying the inevitable. Considering how bizarre the world of One Punch Man truly is, Anos is one of the characters who could possibly exist in the series. He’d likely be the one antagonist capable of achieving his goals.

Giorno Giovanna (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures) 4f1l3u

Giorno Giovanna Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
via Crunchyroll

Needless to say, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is full of weird powers and hacks. After all, ‘bizarre’ is in its name. So naturally, one can easily expect a few characters whose powers and abilities are strong enough to defeat even the strongest of fighters — Saitama included. In this case, Giorno Giovanna is one of the many characters who could emerge victorious.

Utilizing the power of Gold Experience Requiem, the protagonist from part five would undeniably be able to triumph over Saitama by reverting any and every one of Saitama’s actions, nullifying them. Therefore, if Saitama were to ever attempt to punch Giorno, his ive ability would activate and completely nullify the action. At worst, it would result in a never-ending battle, with neither one being able to defeat the other.

Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen) 2k6c1g

Satoru Gojo from 'Jujutsu Kaisen'
Image via MAPPA

Another character who could at least evade Saitama’s power is Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen. Before anyone comes for me, yes — Gojo would technically stand no chance against Saitama’s punch. However, considering the power core in Jujutsu Kaisen is based on cursed energy and cursed spirits, Gojo would undoubtedly have the upper hand in a non-physical fight with Saitama.

To begin with, the bald hero wouldn’t even come close to Gojo due to his unlimited void expansion technique. In the end, the one move that would potentially give Saitama an advantage would inevitably be rendered null. While Saitama would still be extremely quick on his feet, we’ve all seen how Gojo remains unaffected by his opponent’s speed. Although Saitama’s determination might prevent him from feeling overwhelmed inside the limitless void, he would likely lose some sense of reality, resulting in a loss against Gojo.

Rimuru Tempest (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) 2e21k

Rimuru Tempest in That Time I Got Reincaranted as a slime
via Crunchyroll

Rimuru Tempest also possesses a sort of cheat code when it comes to fighting, which could easily overthrow Saitama: the ability to stop time. Now, there are plenty of anime characters who can essentially halt time itself (and a few more who can still win regardless, such as Giorno Giovanna), and while there has been discussion about whether or not Saitama could evade time stopping, nothing has ever been confirmed.

Assuming he wouldn’t be able to escape having his surroundings — and consequently himself — frozen in time, Saitama wouldn’t ever be able to elude Rimuru’s grasp. In addition to this ability, the Demon Slime also possesses the capacity to regenerate after an attack, even against something as brutal as Saitama’s assault. So, for the sake of this article, let’s assume Saitama wouldn’t be able to move even with time stopped — although his gag-character privileges might persevere after they both exhaust each other.

Aizen (Bleach) m4y57

Aizen Bleach
via Hulu

Similar to Dragon Ball or Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Bleach is another anime rich with a multitude of extraordinary abilities that allow us to identify several characters who could potentially overcome Saitama, whether in battle or through other means. While a prevalent fan theory suggests that Baraggan Louisenbairn is the top contender for a character capable of defeating Saitama, I am actually here making the case for Aizen.

The former captain of the 5th division would undoubtedly have the upper hand in a battle against Saitama with his Complete Hypnosis ability. Though it’s uncertain whether hypnosis would affect Saitama, this particular power manipulates an opponent’s five senses, causing them to lose touch with reality and misinterpret their surroundings. While the person grapples with the overwhelming flood of sensory input, Aizen could deliver a fatal blow. Additionally, he possesses a form of semi-immortality, adding another layer to his power.

Saiki Kusuo (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.) 4563h

via Crunchyroll

There has long been a prevailing belief within anime circles that Saiki K. would undoubtedly emerge victorious against Saitama, and for once, I find myself inclined to agree. Saiki possesses the ability to leap through time, allowing him to eliminate Saitama as a baby or even prevent his parents from conceiving him, making it a decidedly uneven fight.

Moreover, in a physical altercation, several of Saiki K.’s other abilities could certainly aid him and potentially overcome Saitama. Using teleportation or even turning Saitama into stone are also viable options. While both Saiki and Saitama were conceived as gag characters intended to be ridiculously powerful, it is fair to say that Saiki’s power is uniquely eccentric, tipping the balance in a way that could ultimately overpower Saitama.

Simon (Gurren Lagann) 3i283p

Simon protecting another character from Gurren Lagann
via Crunchyroll

Some anime have downright ridiculous power cores, and Gurren Lagann is one of them. While it might be a story many of us haven’t watched, we’ve surely heard about it at some point. Possibly because they throw galaxies at each other — no, I’m not joking. Simon can actually throw galaxies at his opponents.

Naturally, as strong as Saitama may be, he’d have a hard time fighting someone who can summon a robot as big as the observable universe. You could argue that in the One Punch Man world, Saitama could punch his way through a fight, but in this particular instance, he wouldn’t have time to even react to Simon and how stupidly overpowered he is.

Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) 105q2t

Usagi Tsukino / Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon)
Screengrab via Toei Company

While Sailor Moon is unmistakably labeled as a Shoujo anime and story, there’s no denying that Usagi Tsukino could effortlessly take down most Shounen protagonists with a single shot, and I’ll firmly stand by that. In the ongoing debate of whether she could outmatch Goku, the consensus often leans in her favor, making it reasonable to assume a similar outcome against Saitama.

Talking raw strength, Saitama’s might is hard to dispute. However, Usagi brings a lot more to the table. Her powers stem from the silver crystal, a force potent enough to trump Saitama. What’s more, it grants her the automatic ability to defend against any attack and even death. With immeasurable and unlimited energy, the silver crystal places the entire universe under Usagi’s command. She’s practically indestructible and invincible, armed with limitless power – the winner is as clear as day.

Arale (Dr.Slump) 1d134k

Arale from Dr.Slump smiling
via Prime Video

If we’re considering Dragon Ball characters, it’s only fair to add in Arale from Dr. Slump, also created by Akira Toriyama. Much like Saitama, she’s a gag character, and as we all know, Toriyama has a penchant for creating absurdly overpowered universes and characters. This means that while Saitama is undeniably powerful, he’s not invincible – and that’s where Arale steps in.

Picture this: Saitama throws a punch at her, maybe feels a pang of guilt about hitting a kid, only to see Arale pop her head back into place, and just like that, the fight continues until she wins. After all, we’ve seen Arale effortlessly take down Dragon Ball Super Vegeta and keep pace with Super Saiyan Blue Goku, using just 1 percent of her power to match his Kamehameha – in the end, Saitama would pose no threat to her whatsoever.

Anime in the 2000s was marked by some truly impressive storytelling. Somewhere among the best of the best, sits the captivating sci-fi masterpiece Code Geass

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is often hailed as a phenomenon, blending intense mecha battles, strategic brilliance, and a compelling narrative. However, finally finishing a show of such caliber will understandably leave you wanting more, especially due to the polarizing way Code Geass ended. The series shares thematic similarities with Code Geass, including strategic warfare and moral ambiguity.

Drawn into a conflict between resistance fighters and the ruling organization, Shu must navigate moral dilemmas, political intrigue, and personal struggles as he grapples with his newfound abilities. With political intrigue, rebellion, and a protagonist grappling with newfound abilities, it draws parallels to the thematic elements in Code Geass.

6. No Game No Life 4r4fn

This fantasy anime follows the extraordinary sibling duo, Sora and Shiro, who are undefeated gamers known as Blank in the real world. Transported to the world of Sisboard, where all disputes are settled through games, they aim to conquer the realm and challenge the god Tet. Much like Code Geass, No Game No Life is fueled by strategic genius and disdain for a higher power.

5. Terror in Resonance 6k1n5d

Terror in Resonance, also known as Zankyou no Terror is a psychological thriller anime that revolves around two teenage terrorists, Nine and Twelve, who embark on a series of carefully orchestrated bombings in Tokyo to expose government corruption. 3. Mobile Suit Gundam 00 5b5s33

Overall, the series features intense mecha battles and a focus on the impact of warfare on society.

2. Monster 5w2s27

Monster, one of the best psychological thriller anime, revolves around Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a renowned surgeon. After choosing to save the life of a young boy named Johan over the mayor, Tenma’s life takes a dark turn. Johan, the seemingly innocent patient, becomes a cold-blooded serial killer. As Tenma pursues Johan to stop the bloodshed, he uncovers a web of conspiracies, manipulation, and a haunting past that connects them inextricably. Monster, like Code Geass, explores moral ambiguity, and features intelligent protagonists facing complex decisions within a backdrop of conspiracy and political intrigue.

1. Death Note p6x1v

Death Note revolves around Light Yagami, a brilliant high school student who discovers a mysterious notebook that allows him to kill anyone whose name he writes in it. The iconic anime/manga may be unbeatable, but if you're desperate for similar content these shows might hit the spot.]]>
<![CDATA[

Few creations have captured global attention like Death Note. The manga turned anime turned live-action series is one of the biggest Japanese entertainment exports in the world. The antics of Light Yagami and his otherworldly, deadly notebook has captivated readers and viewers for years now. The concept is so famous that it even earned itself that most solid of pop culture stamps: a Simpsons parody.

While there’s tonnes of Death Note content to dive into, the most dedicated fans have been following the series for nearly two decades now and have already ploughed through everything they can. If that’s the case for you, or you just loved the story and characters and want to see something more like it, then check out our list of the 10 best anime like Death Note.

Monster 6f55v

A lot of Death Note‘s appeal is the way it plays with moral ambiguity and touches on adult themes. If that’s one of the reasons you’re hooked on Light’s story, then there’s no doubt you’ll become obsessed with Monster. Set in in the aftermath of WW2, the dark anime follows Kenzo, a Japanese surgeon living in the European country who finds himself being drawn into the lives of one of his patients, a sociopathic murderer named Johan Liebert. Complex, beautifully animated, and addictively nerve-wracking, this is a masterful example of anime in general, and worth watching for any fan of television, even if they don’t usually like animated shows.

Code Geass 4r4p13

One of the things that many people love about Death Note is the way an already advanced character receives some kind of mystical power, forcing them to fully understand the limits of themselves. In Death Note‘s case, the genius Light receives the eponymous notebook, and in Code Geass, we see an exiled prince named Lelouch vi Britannia gain the supernatural “power of absolute obedience” from a mysterious woman. Both characters attempt to use their newfound power for what they deem to be the greater good, only to be wrapped up in complicated moral conundrums. If you love Light’s character, you’ll find the same positives in Lelouch. Plus, there’s plenty of Code Geass content to get stuck into!

Attack on Titan 1t23r

Legendary anime director Tetsurō Araki directed both Death Note and three seasons of this wildly successful anime series, which many consider to be the most popular in the world in of viewers and cultural impact. There are a few differences stylistically, and the stories aren’t overly similar, but both retain a gritty, dark vibe while also offering plenty in of characterization and storytelling. Plus, the soundtrack is full of certified bangers.

Terror in Resonance 6m1f6u

You wouldn’t think to describe a show about two dastardly teens stealing an atomic bomb and threatening Tokyo with it as gritty and realist, yet Terror in Resonance (also known as Terror in Tokyo) fits the bill. Like Death Note, this anime has highly intelligent young characters wielding awesome power, and has been praised for its outstanding direction and storytelling. Plus, the cat-and-mouse nature of the plot will also be appealing to fans of the show about the supernatural notebook.

Psycho- 2h1o2a

This anime series was popular enough that it was also given the big-screen treatment, with multiple films based in its universe being made between 2014 and this year. The show follows an amateur detective who works in a world where all Japanese citizens are constantly monitored, and those deemed to be likely to turn to crime are either arrested or killed (a bit like Minority Report). However, some of these “latent” criminals are made to help the police to find other, more violent people. The blurring of boundaries between police and criminals is what makes this similar to Death Note, as do the dark, adult themes.

Death Parade 2j4012

If you like Death Note‘s nuanced take on morality and who gets to judgement, as well as its supernatural and psychological elements, then the similarly named Death Parade is for you. The series follows the recently deceased as they head to afterlife “bars” and compete in games to see what will become of their souls. Following one of the “bartenders,” it’s as addictive as it is beautifully animated.

Moriarty the Patriot 5b2u1t

Thematically there’s very little between Death Note and this engrossing mystery series, but if you love the push and pull between the police and Light in Death Note, then you’re sure to enjoy Moriarty the Patriot. The show follows a genius crime consultant with a hatred of the upper class as he comes across the equally brilliant Sherlock Holmes and begins to entangle the detective in his crime games.

Future Diary n1c1u

The parallels between this series and Death Note are clear: both revolve around teens who own a magical object that seems to be able to either predict or shape the future. Future Diary tells the story of Yukiteru Amano, owner of a “Future Diary,” which can predict up to ninety days in the future. Yukiteru also learns that he’s part of a battle-royale style event with the other diary owners, with the winner becoming a demigod. There are lots of brilliantly animated fight scenes, as well as plenty of intrigue.

Case Closed/Detective Conan 2x413y

This classic nineties anime has plenty of global fans, and like Death Note has plenty of crime and mystery elements with teen main characters (mostly). It was so successful that it also spawned numerous films. Case Closed (or Detective Conan as it’s known by some) follows a teen detective who, in an attempted assassination attempt, is shrunk into the body of a child. He continues to fight crime, while also trying to get back to his original body.

Steins;Gate 506k6o

A genius protagonist with the ability to change the world through seemingly magical means? No, not Death Note, but Steins;Gate! This anime follows a scientist who accidentally figures out a way to send messages through time, thus managing to impact the future and present. Both shows are as engaging as they are well directed, so if you’re a fan of one you’re bound to like the other, despite Steins;Gate being a little lighter.

<![CDATA[

Warning: This article has major spoilers for the Attack On Titan finale (as well as other anime).

Oftentimes, when an anime comes to an end, the fans begin to dissect and examine its conclusion. With a magnificent series like Attack On Titan finally over, fans have camped on opposite sides, and are heavily polarized by the finale.

But it’s not just AOT. Controversial anime endings have long been a topic of discussion amongst otaku. After all, so many things can make a diehard fan feel unsatisfied when their favorite anime is done. Perhaps it’s a case of an unfaithful adaptation of the manga, or the death of a fan-favorite? Either way, shock, anger, melancholy, and extreme grief are the order of the day for these polarizing series. These 10 anime have sparked some serious debates about their conclusions, and now, the highly divisive Eren Jeager, and the rest of the Attack On Titan crew have ed the ranks.

10. Tokyo Ghoul 2a5z2a

Tokyo Ghoul was quick to win the love and attention of its audience after its first season. The anime was set in a world where humans and man-eaters called Ghouls co-exist. In this world, a college student named Kaneki becomes a half-ghoul after an accident and is forced to experience the life of being a ghoul and hiding his new identity from humanity.

Despite its first season garnering praise from critics and fans alike, the rest of the anime went downhill pretty fast. The last season especially left its audience quite confused, and its conclusion didn’t help its case. It was miles apart from what the manga readers were expecting, and the liberties taken were seen as an unfaithful detour from the source material. Overall, Tokyo Ghoul went from being insanely loved, to being an extremely polarizing anime, particularly for its rushed and confusing ending.

9. Puella Magi Madoka Magica 255n1s

The seemingly magical cutesy anime presented a dark and thought-provoking narrative, something different than what the genre’s audience is used to. The story follows Madoka Kaname, a seemingly ordinary girl who is offered a chance to become a magical girl. However, she soon discovers the grim and tragic consequences that come with this new power.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica enjoyed a lot of fan praise during its run, but its conclusion would damage all the world-building it had created. The incredibly sad anime story ended with the protagonist Madoka erasing herself from existence. Why? In the hopes of rewriting the universe’s rules and preventing any more magical girls from becoming witches. Fans continuously debate whether Madoka’s self-sacrifice was a win or a loss, especially because her friends are left with no memories of her.

8. Berserk 38675c

Berserk is a dark and gritty fantasy anime that chronicles the harrowing odyssey of Guts, a solitary warrior scarred by a tragic past. Driven by an unquenchable desire for vengeance, he confronts a malevolent and supernatural entity, known as the God Hand. While the anime will forever remain acclaimed, Berserk’s finale did not sit well with the fans, and it’s fairly easy to see why.

The original run of Berserk concludes with the shocking and traumatic Eclipse event, in which Griffith’s betrayal triggers a nightmarish massacre within Guts’ mercenary band. Just as the destinies of Guts and his comrades hang in the balance, the series leaves viewers on a suspenseful cliffhanger, leaving numerous unresolved plot threads and an abrupt, unsatisfying conclusion for its audience.

7. Devilman Crybaby 4i4b1a

Devilman Crybaby entered the anime world with quite a bang, shocking viewers with its graphic content and intense narrative. Moreover, its thrilling content took a back burner to an even more exciting plot. This modern reimagining of a classic, the series follows Akira Fudo, a young man who becomes a Devilman, a being with the power of both a demon and a human. As he battles demonic forces, Akira navigates the complexities of his dual nature and the moral dilemmas that arise.

Saying goodbye to a beloved character in the finale can hurt, but bidding farewell to all the characters? Now that’s sure to ruffle more than a few feathers. Devilman Crybaby ends with a worldwide apocalypse where every character, including Akira, dies in a disastrous battle between angels and demons. This extremely controversial end left many fans of the anime in utter shock and disbelief. Furthermore, it began to stir up some major discussions about its symbolism and meaning. While certain viewers embraced its daring exploration of the grim, tragic reflection on the perpetual cycle of violence and hatred, some found it excessively harsh and merciless.

6. Akame Ga Kill 4t476a

Akame Ga Kill is a dark and action-packed anime that follows Tatsumi, a warrior who s an assassin group known as Night Raid, to combat a corrupt empire. Fueled by a desire for justice, the group targets high-ranking officials and faces intense battles and moral dilemmas.

Throughout the series, we watched many main characters meet their tragic ends. However, the worst of all was the death of Tatsumi, the central character. In its final episodes, the series strays far from the manga and concludes with the death of the entire main cast. While some viewers found this conclusion realistic, others felt that it deviated too much from the hopeful end of its source material.

5. Attack on Titan 1t4v40

To say Attack On Titan is a beloved anime is an understatement. Now, with the acclaimed series finally ended, the conclusion polarized fans all the more. Set in a world where humanity is on the brink of extinction due to giant humanoid creatures known as Titans, the story centers on a hapless youngster named Eren Yeager. Eren and his friends the military to fight the Titans and uncover the mysteries of their walled society.

After a decade-long watch, viewers finally said goodbye to the brilliantly written characters. However, Attack On Titan’s finale didn’t impress everyone. The series ends with Eren killing off 80% of humanity and setting his friends up to be the heroes who kill him. The anime also strayed slightly from the ending proposed by the manga. While many manga readers were happy for the change, many anime-only watchers found the series’ end anti-climatic and underwhelming. Some have called it sloppy and rushed, while expressing that the story’s end could have been treated with a bit more care.

4. Code Geass 1n4k1s

Code Geass is a sci-fi anime set in an alternative future where the Holy Britannian Empire has subjugated Japan. The series follows the story of Lelouch Lamperouge, a young man who acquires a mysterious power called Geass, enabling him to manipulate others. Subsequently, he employs this newfound ability to lead a rebellion against Britannia.

This politically charged anime concludes with Lelouch orchestrating his own assassination to establish global peace. His intricate plan involved assuming the role of a despised tyrant and using his death as a catalyst for worldwide unity. While some viewers lauded the ending for its profound sacrifice, others found it selfish and an act of manipulation.

3. The Promised Neverland k472t

The gradual descent of The Promised Neverland after season 1 came as a major shock to fans. What was touted as one of the most hyped anime of 2019 took a downward, messy turn. The mystery thriller anime revolves around a set of orphans living in a seemingly idyllic orphanage but the children soon discover a sinister secret: they are being raised as livestock for monstrous creatures. Overall, the anime follows their desperate escape plan.

As aforementioned, season 2 of this thrilling anime was a true letdown. Despite the manga being complete, the anime chose to skip the most popular arc of the story. Moreover, the anime was extremely rushed, attempting to squeeze a fully-formed longform series into 12 episodes. This caused several plot holes and a rushed conclusion, making it one of the most controversial anime endings of all time.

2. Death Note 3e1a66

Indeed, Death Note is renowned for its captivating rollercoaster of suspense and intrigue. The psychological thriller anime centers around Light Yagami, a brilliant high school student who stumbles upon a supernatural notebook granting him the power to eliminate anyone by writing their name. As Light exploits the Death Note to rid the world of criminals, he catches the attention of the enigmatic genius detective, L

While the series enjoyed widespread iration within the anime community, its conclusion has continuously sparked debates. In the final episodes, Light is outwitted by L’s successor, Near, a twist that some fans felt was an abrupt departure from Light’s unbeatable character. Critics also noted that Near’s character lacked the depth and development necessary for Light’s defeat to carry the same weight. With L gone, many had expected a tragic, yet realistic end. However, introducing a perfect savior right at the tail-end of the anime was frowned upon.

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion 5w194o

Often cited as one of the most iconic and polarizing anime series of all time, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a groundbreaking mecha anime that follows Shinji Ikari as he is recruited to pilot a giant bio-mechanical robot to protect humanity. With many psychological elements, the characters are truly relatable in almost every way.

However, the series ends with a self-examining exploration of Shinji’s psyche, instead of an actual conclusion to the anime’s ongoing plot. This left many viewers perplexed and frustrated. Furthermore, the abstract and surreal nature of the ending raised numerous questions. Neon Genesis Evangelion has been complex since its first episode, but the ending literally had fans demanding for a straightforward resolution to the overall narrative.

Whether it's bringing us to tears or getting us pumped up, these soundtracks have done it all.]]>
<![CDATA[

While anime isn’t for everyone, the medium’s stimulating collection of original soundtracks is enough to rouse viewers to a fever pitch or give rise to an air of melancholy using songs imbued with poignance and longing. Depending on the sub-genre, anime soundtracks can inspire, motivate, or devastate. Regardless of which emotions these songs evoke, anime aficionados keep coming back for more.

Even if it’s enduring heartbreak, forbidden romance, epic skirmish, or everything in between, there’s always killer music to heighten the impact of the visuals. When jaw-dropping animation meets aesthetic composition, Japanese anime transcends mere storytelling and becomes a groundbreaking testament to modern technology and human capability.

Featuring some of the most successful and influential anime of all time, here are the most electrifying, heart-rending, and monumental soundtracks to exist in Japanese culture.

Attack on Titan 1t23r

Along with the anime itself, the Attack on Titan soundtrack was released in 2013 and composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, who also worked on the musical scores for popular anime like The Seven Deadly Sins and Blue Exorcist. Featuring songs such as “The Reluctant Heroes,” “Eye-Water,” and “Army-Attack,” the Attack on Titan soundtrack — at least for the first season — saw Sawano collaborate with MPI, a vocalist and lyricist who has partnered with Sawano since 2008. MPI’s vocals can be heard during “Barricades” and “Call Your Name.”

Attack on Titan‘s soundtrack comprises several albums from Sawano, namely The DOGS, YAMANAIAME, and various iterations of Attack on Titan Original Soundtrack — with the numerics or wording altered to correspond with Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, and “The Final Season.” Considering the premise of Hajime Isayama’s dark fantasy anime, it makes sense that many of the Attack on Titan tracks prioritize heavy drum beats, raucous guitar solos, and an operatic choir as backup.

Cowboy Bebop 2a4n3d

The infinitely popular Cowboy Bebop anime was accompanied by multiple soundtrack albums with a principal focus on jazz. These albums were collaboratively composed by Yoko Kanno and Seatbelts, a diverse band founded by Kanno. As an outlet for many of the Bebop tracks, the official Cowboy Bebop soundtrack begins with “Tank!,” the series’ opening theme. There are several other memorable tracks, such as “Bad Dog No Biscuits,” “Space Lion,” and “Too Good Too Bad.”

Shortly after the Seatbelts album was released in May 1998, a follow-up mini-album titled Cowboy Bebop Vitaminless was unveiled in June 1998, featuring the end-credits theme: “The Real Folk Blues.” In harsh contrast to the Attack on Titan soundtrack, Cowboy Bebop chooses a more mellow melody and appropriately utilizes the “bebop” sub-genre of jazz, which is distinguishable by its fast tempo and abrupt chord changes, to pay homage to the series’ title.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure 5i673v

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, an anime adapted from Hirohiko Araki’s best-selling manga, focuses on the Joestar family through many generations, specifically between the 19th and 21st centuries. of the Joestar family are prophesied to defeat supernatural foes using the mysterious powers they possess, and all of their names can be abbreviated to “JoJo.” Within the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure soundtrack, there are many fan-favorite scores, including the most famous of them all, “Stardust Crusaders,” which is the theme song for one of the Joestar brethren, Jotaro Kujo.

The theme became iconic because it would always feature as the prelude to a battle. The original soundtrack for Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure was collaboratively composed by Toshiyuki O’mori, Takatsugu Wakabayashi, and Kōhei Tanaka, who are all accredited singer-songwriters and musicians. Typically, the tracks comprise a polished brass section, some brazen guitars, and incorporate some funky backbeats.

Neon Genesis Evangelion 6r333p

Most of Neon Genesis Evangelion‘s music was composed by Shirō Sagisu, who also had a hand in the original TV show’s three OST albums. In 1997, Sagisu received the Kobe Animation Award for “Best Music Score” — a well-deserved triumph. There have been umpteen remixes and compilations made using the Neon Genesis Evangelion soundtracks, resulting in 12 original soundtracks, four compilation albums, six studio albums, two live albums, and even a score for the Sega Saturn’s 1997 video game Neon Genesis Evangelion: 2nd Impression.

Japanese singer Yoko Takahashi was responsible for performing “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis,” which would become the opening theme song for the series, and Bart Howard’s “Fly Me to the Moon” was used for the ending theme, performed by various vocal artists. Other songs include “Tamashii no Refrain,” used in Evangelion: Death and Rebirth; “Thanatos -If I Can’t Be Yours-,” used in both Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion; and “Beautiful World,” used in the Rebuild of Evangelion series of films. Most Neon Genesis Evangelion tracks feature violin, piano, and guitar, which combine to create a classic harmony that borrows from Japanese scales.

Death Note 1k6g1z

The soundtrack belonging to the most influential anime of all time was composed by Yoshihisa Hirano and Hideki Taniuchi; tracks 1-18 were composed and arranged by Taniuchi, while tracks 19-28 were composed and arranged by Hirano. Additionally, the opening and ending themes were sung by the Nightmare, a Japanese rock band from Sendai, consisting of lead singer Yomi, lead guitarist Sakito, rhythmic guitarist Hitsugi, bass guitarist Ni~ya, and drummer Ruka.

Their songs “The World” and “Alumina” in the Death Note anime helped them gain international recognition, and Nightmare have been considered huge influences on the visual kei (elaborate hairstyles and make-up) scene. The Death Note tracks are compiled into Death Note Original Soundtrack I, II, and III, including songs like “Death Note,” “Black Light,” and “Confrontation.” There are also albums dedicated to the Death Note TV drama and Netflix live-action film.

Ghost in the Shell 615p6x

Music for the anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex was composed by Yoko Kanno, who also worked on Cowboy Bebop and its live-action adaptation, Darker than Black and Terror in Resonance. Kanno is the frontwoman for the aforementioned Seatbelts, and she was also responsible for composing the soundtrack to the two OVA films, The Laughing Man and Individual Eleven, and the TV film Solid State Society. “Velveteen,” “Home Stay,” and “Where Does This Ocean Go">Samurai Champloo features chilled-out hip-hop rhythms that juxtapose perfectly with the epic scenes, mixing action-packed bushido with lyrical reflections by Nujabes and Fat Jon. Champloo shook millennials out of their slumber to hear “Battlecry” on Adult Swim at 3 a.m. With Shing02’s offbeat rapping, a dreamy synthesizer and breakbeat rhythm, and discordant piano notes drifting over the music, “Battlecry” imparts a transcendent peace. “The Space Between Worlds” captures the imivity and melancholy of time through sound. “Just Forget” combines nostalgia with reminiscence. “Shiki No Uta,” the final track, features Minmi’s angelic vocals over a piano-driven beat that is both refreshing and freeing.

Even if it’s just for the music, you should check out Samurai Champloo. Nujabes was one of the most legendary music producers, and it’s tragic that he ed away in 2010 at the age of 36. In many ways, Nujabes is the godfather of low-fidelity hip-hop, and his musical style has influenced generations of musicians. He was far ahead of his time. There is far less awareness of the true innovation he made by combining hip-hop and jazz. In Samurai Champloo, Nujabes’ trademark style is clearly evident throughout the soundtrack. It is without a doubt that his music is unlike anything you have ever heard in anime before.

From the psycopaths, to the monsters! ]]>
<![CDATA[

Unless it’s a horror anime, you’d be hard-pressed to find some jump-scare moments that’ll shake your bones. However, there are some truly scary characters that will leave you absolutely floored by their ability to evoke some serious fear.

In anime, character design is often used as a means to stir emotions. Take Monster’s Johan Liebert for example, a regular old man with an emotionless stare and smile at his disposal. He’s a stark contrast to a character like Ryuk from Death Note, whose face you do NOT want to see in your dreams. So if you’re aiming for a little scare, these horrifying anime characters are worth checking out.

10. Mad Pierrot (Cowboy Bebop) 48466s

Pierrot La Fou, widely known as Mad Pierrot, was the subject of a lab experiment. While the experiment was deemed a failure, Pierrot was kept in isolation indefinitely and his mind became broken. As a result, he escaped from his prison and began a killing spree. Donning a clown outfit and a permanent smile, Pierrot is easily one of the scariest anime villains around.

9. No Face (Spirited Away) 1o1i63

No Face is a character that embodies a different kind of fear. While he is not inherently malevolent, he has a mysterious and unpredictable behavior, which, coupled with his insatiable hunger for emotions, makes for a terrifying presence. The transformation from a seemingly harmless spirit to an unsettling one is a hallmark of this character.

8. Souichi Tsuji (Junji Ito Collection) 5i2q1n

Souichi is the main character of many of Junji Ito’s stories. He is often shown constantly biting iron nails or steel due to his iron deficiency. Specializing in black magic, the 11-year-old lays hexes on people he doesn’t like. Moreover, even his family was not safe from his wiles, as he eventually turned them into hideous figures. Despite being just a child, Souichi is clearly unwell, and not one to cross paths with.

7. Shou Tucker (FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) 4u3v6e

Shou Tucker, also known as the Sewing Life Alchemist, is a bio-alchemist with a record of creating a chimera capable of human speech. Beyond his chilling moments, Shou is also one of the most hated anime characters. He is infamous for his gruesome experiments fusing humans and animals. However, what makes him truly terrifying is the fact that he did not spare his own daughter Nina from his experimental evil, and fused her with their pet dog. The moral depravity and detachment he exhibits are genuinely disturbing.

6. Tomura Shigaraki (My Hero Academia) 4o4k3x

Leader of the League of Villains, and the main antagonist of the series, Tomura was raised by his master All for One, the former most powerful villain. Tomura has two very powerful Quirks which have made him the current most powerful villain in the world, even suring his master. “Quirk Decay” allows him to disintegrate whatever he touches, while “All for One” allows him to steal the Quirks of others and use them as his. His regenerative abilities also contribute to making him a very terrifying and almost indestructible character.

5. The Beast Titan (Attack on Titan) 1b1s29

The Beast Titan is one of the nine original Titans. Unlike most of the other titans who take on human likeness, the Beast Titan is more animal-like, yet he has the ability to speak. He also has a penchant for death and destruction, with a sinister plan for the innocent. Again, while he isn’t exactly a horror aficionado’s go-to, his creepy appearance is straight out of any Chewbacca or Bigfoot nightmare!

4. Ryuk (Death Note) 2y653t

Despite being a Shinigami Death god, Ryuk gives everyone chills when he comes on screen. His physical appearance is a terrifying sight to see, no matter how many times he shows up. While Ryuk’s whimsical and light-ish presence is a stark contrast to Light Yagami’s ruthless pursuits, Ryuk gains scary points just for his horrifyingly disfigured looks. Also, even though he may not actively harm humans, his enjoyment of the chaos and death that his book brings is bone-chilling.

3. Hisoka Morrow (Hunter X Hunter) 41462

Hisoka Morrow is a prime example of a character who exudes an eerie mix of sensuality and sadism. Hisoka’s bloodlust during the Hunter Exam was enough to terrify Gon and stop him in his tracks. His clown character design doesn’t help matters either. Hisoka also has an obsession with power and a thirst for challenging battles which make him an unsettling presence in the series.

2. Nanika (Hunter X Hunter) 66q2i

Nanika is a mysterious Dark Continent creature associated with Alluka Zoldyck. Nanika possesses the power to grant wishes, but this comes with a sinister condition that terrifies those who encounter it. The scariest part of this anime character is the uncertainty of interacting with Nanika. You’d do well to stay away.

1. Johan Liebert (Monster) 5f2t1b

Who says you need a costume or muscle to be labeled the scariest anime character ever? Johan Liebert, the antagonist of the lauded psychological anime, Monster, is a masterful embodiment of evil. He has a cold, manipulative demeanor and a knack for psychological warfare, using his mind to take down whomever he deems fit for destruction. A sadistic psychopath, Johan also has the ability to control others. Furthermore, his lack of remorse for his actions makes him a truly chilling character.

The anime to live action pipeline is often a hit or miss. Here are 10 hits!]]>
<![CDATA[

After the success of One Piece in live-action, anime fans all around the world are excited for an expected incoming wave of anime adaptations. However, Luffy and the gang aren’t the only crew that have been properly transitioned.

Indeed, the anime-to-live-action pipeline has caused more anger than joy. After all, who could forget the abysmal Dragon Ball Evolution movie? Or the disappointing 2017 Death Note live-action? Or when Scarlett Johansson played a Japanese woman in Ghost in The Shell? Dare I go on?

Nevertheless, there have been some standout adaptations, even before One Piece took the world by storm. While the visual mastery of anime can hardly be replicated, the following live-action adaptations have come close. By remaining faithful to the source material, they have managed to evoke nostalgia and reel in some new fans along the way.

10. Tokyo Revengers (2021) 5y2324

Released in 2021, the sci-fi delinquent film follows the life of Takemichi Hanagaki, a down-and-out adult who discovers that he has the power to time-travel to his teenage years. Using his newfound powers, he tries to change the past and prevent the event that leads to the death of his high school girlfriend. Takemichi eventually becomes entangled in gang conflicts and must navigate the world of Tokyo’s street gangs to protect the people he loves.

9. Inuyashiki (2018) 1g3l54

Based on the manga and anime series, Inuyashiki follows Ichiro Inuyashiki, a sad elderly man who is accidentally transformed into a cyborg after an encounter with extraterrestrial entities. Ichiro uses his newfound abilities to fight crime and make a difference in the world, while another person with the same powers takes a much darker path. Inuyashiki is one of the most engrossing anime live-action adaptations of the 2010s.

8. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (2017) 736j61

Attempting to rework the fabulously eccentric anime Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure into a live-action is a herculean task. However, the 2017 version was a more-than-decent attempt. The story follows Josuke Higashikata, a young man with unique “Stand” abilities. He uses these abilities to battle malevolent “Stand” s who threaten the peace of his small town. When a serial killer comes into play, Josuke and his allies must confront the evil force and protect the innocent residents.

7. Great Teacher Onizuka 3q3mj

Adapted from the popular manga and anime series with the same name, Great Teacher Onizuka tells the story of Eikichi Onizuka, a former gang member who becomes a high school teacher. He uses his unorthodox teaching methods to help his troubled students. Moreover, with his unrelenting dedication, he transforms the lives of his pupils and instills important values and life lessons in them. There have been several reiterations of this popular anime, so viewers are spoiled for choice with a variety of subplots to the main story.

6. Death Note (2006) 1d2t26

No, not that 2017 mess. We’re going all the way back to 2006 for this. Remaining faithful to the source material, this film is a prime example of a great anime live-action adaptation. The story follows Light Yagami, a brilliant high school student who stumbles upon a mysterious book that allows him to kill anyone whose name he writes in it. Adopting the persona of “Kira,” he begins to use the book to rid the world of criminals. His actions draw the attention of a genius detective known as L, and the two begin to play a life-and-death game of strategy and wit.

5. Gintama (2017-2019) 3h5044

The anime Gintama is famous for its zany humor and top-of-the-shelf action, and while that was difficult to nail, the live-action was quite the treat. Three films have been released and they are all fun watches. The story centers on Gintoki Sakata, a lazy samurai living in an alternate-universe Edo period where aliens have invaded the world and imposed a strict social order. Alongside his friends Shinpachi and Kagura, Gintoki takes on odd jobs to survive.

4. Alice in Borderland (2020-) 633626

This thrilling death game series follows the story of Arisu and his friends, who get transported to a mysterious parallel world called Borderland. They are forced to participate in deadly, high-stakes games to survive. They must navigate the games of Borderland and outsmart their opponents if they have any hopes of returning to the real world. Alice in Borderland has been a huge hit in the case of anime to live-action adaptations. The series has gained a substantial following, effectively drawing new viewers to the source material.

3. Rurouni Kenshin (2012-2021) 2e39o

The adaptation of the beloved manga and anime series brings to life the tale of Himura Kenshin, a wandering samurai. Set in the Meiji era, Kenshin seeks redemption for his past as a deadly swordsman by protecting the innocent. However, his past catches up with him when new threats emerge. Due to the immense popularity of the anime series and manga, five live-action films have been released over a decade.

2. Blade of the Immortal (2017) 4t4g1d

Blade of the Immortal tells the story of Manji, a skilled samurai cursed with immortality after a legendary battle. Staying true to its source material, the film is indeed violent and gory, but a thrilling watch nonetheless. Seeking redemption for his past sins, Manji becomes a bodyguard to Rin, a vengeful young girl after the swordsmen who murdered her family.

1. One Piece (2023) 3d4i4d

One Piece is arguably the best anime live-action adaptation to grace our screens so far. The epic adventure series that follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate with the ability to stretch his body like rubber. Luffy has dreams of finding the “One Piece” and becoming the Pirate King. He and his diverse crew of Straw Hat Pirates travel through the Grand Line, encountering powerful foes and making new friends in their search for the “One Piece.” Fans of the original material have expressed their joy at an authentic portrayal of some of the most beloved characters in manga and anime.

Funimation has a wealth of excellent anime series for fans of all tastes. The streaming service offers a wide variety of new and classic anime series for viewers to choose from, so they can always find something they like. Of course, that’s not all Funimation is famous for; they were also early adopters of simulcasting and simuldubbing, making new episodes available to fans shortly after their Japanese premiere and dubbing them into English just as soon

When it comes to Funimation’s extensive library, series like Samurai Champloo and Kill La Kill are just the top of the enormous iceberg of the streaming platform’s collection. Therefore, here is a rundown of the top 15 anime series on Funimation.

The show is very sweet and a twist on the typical coming-of-age story. It was released in 2014 and ended in 2015. There are 22 episodes that can be enjoyed on Funimation.

While March Comes in Like a Lion is quite interesting, it is important to note that it deals with concepts that may be difficult for some viewers. These include depression and bullying. It ran from 2016 to 2018 and has 44 episodes.

11. Toradora! 4ms51

Many say it is the best anime series of this decade. Samurai Champloo is a 2004 Japanese historical adventure anime series that mixes traditional features with anachronistic modern allusions like hip-hop to create a dramatized image of Japan during the Edo period. Tea waitress Fuu, wandering outlaw Mugen, and Ronin Jin are the protagonists of this series. After rescuing Mugen and Jin from certain death, Fuu coerces them to help her in her search for a warrior with a sunflower scent.

The show is structured like a road movie, and its key themes include the depiction and acceptance of death and the tolerance and acceptance of minorities. Pre-production on the series began in 2002, but director Shinichiro Watanabe had been working on the characters and premise since 1999 (during his work on Cowboy Bebop: The Movie and The Animatrix).

The series has received mostly excellent reviews, with particular attention paid to its animation and music. It has also been commercially successful in the West.

7. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood 6n265n

The story follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who find themselves in a terrifying new reality after a botched alchemy experiment in their home.

Despite knowing that human transmutation is against the alchemical principle, the boys attempted to bring their mother back to life. Years of research lead the Elric brothers to seek out the Philosopher’s Stone, a powerful stone that allows an alchemist to break the traditional laws of Equivalent Exchange. With his alchemy skills on the rise, Edward acquires the nickname “Fullmetal,” and the boys’ exploits soon involve them in a global conspiracy. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an anime classic with a deep story, memorable characters, and a compelling world.

Code Geass has successfully sold over a million DVDs and Blu-rays in Japan. Animage’s Anime Grand Prix and Animation Kobe’s Best of Show are only a few accolades bestowed upon both series. These seemingly sentient garments endow Ryuko, Satsuki, and the rest of the cast with extraordinary martial arts abilities.

In general, critics praised Kill la Kill. Robert Frazer of U.K. Anime Network gave high marks to the “keen selection of music” and the animation of combat scenes and character movements. In 2013 the series won the “Best Streaming Anime” award at the U.K. Anime Network Awards. Several trophies, including Best Character Design and Best Script, were given to Kill la Kill at the 4th Annual Newtype Anime Awards.

2. Cowboy Bebop 712l47

The plot begins in 2071, and follows a motley crew of bounty hunters traveling the galaxy searching for wanted criminals aboard the spacecraft Bebop. The compelling histories of each complement the show’s examination of issues like isolation, nihilism, and the weight of one’s choices.

Cowboy Bebop‘s persuasive narrative and unforgettable characters make it a must-watch for any anime fan. After 26 episodes, the show was considered one of the greatest animated TV shows ever. Critics and fans gave the show rave reviews. The art direction, characters, screenplay, voice acting, animation, and score all received high scores. Cowboy Bebop was also a commercial success upon its initial release and earned several major anime and science fiction awards.

All singing, all dancing murderous anime mayhem. What else could you possibly need for a fun night out?]]>
<![CDATA[

Anime and manga have been officially mainstream for ages now and, though Western enthusiasm still pales in comparison to the white-hot Japanese fandoms, each year seems to break new boundaries. Just this week we’ve seen the rapturous reception to Netflix’s One Piece, which has succeeded where other Western live-action adaptations have failed (I’m looking at you, Cowboy Bebop).

Even so, there’s one key part of anime and manga that’s huge in Japan but has so far had little impact in the West: live-action shows and musicals adapting top properties. Japan has seen hit theater shows based on Naruto, Attack on Titan, Bleach, Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, Hunter X Hunter, and One Piece (with many other examples out there).

Now on-stage anime/manga may finally be about to blossom into Western theater. London seems to be the epicenter, with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2022 adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbor Totoro instantly selling out, opening to universal rave reviews, and returning for an extended run later this year (I saw it, and every word of praise it got was deserved) and next year Les Misérables director John Caird will bring a blockbuster adaptation of Spirited Away to the London Coliseum.

But there’s another contender tearing up the West End right now – Death Note: The Musical.

Now let the Death Note play its part / And become a work of art 3o126r

Death Note: The Musical premiered in Japan in 2015. A 2016 Korean production, though like most anime/manga adaptations, it wasn’t ever considered for a Western run. Things have changed and, after a sold-out two-night run in the London Palladium, it’s now playing at London’s Lyric Theater until the 10th.

I went along last night (and, for the record, paid full price for my ticket) and had a blast. There’s no feasible way to tell the entire Death Note saga in one stage show, so some key events are condensed, but anyone who’s thrilled about the battle of wits between Light and L will find a lot to love.

It’s soon clear why Death Note makes for such a great musical: Light and L each have clearly defined personalities and a tendency to monologue, which is just a small step away from singing them. Shinigami gods Ryuk and Rem are of course also along for the ride, and their supernatural outside perspective and extravagant costumes mean they slot extremely neatly into a musical.

Other characters have been tweaked. The smartest change is making Misa Amane into a pop idol rather than a model, opening the door for two catchy numbers performed alongside a quartet of pink-haired pigtailed dancers (the crowd went absolutely bananas for these songs).

Judging by the number of cosplayers in the audience, I’m guessing most people there were die-hard Death Note fans and were already familiar with the story. Whether anyone experiencing Death Note for the first time would be able to follow the narrative is a different matter, as the show skates quickly over the Note’s many rules and why L is so respected.

The show also trims down the story so substantially that the ending comes at you fast, though to be fair, Death Note gets quite convoluted, and trying to crowbar in third-act characters Near and Mello isn’t going to work in a two-hour-ish show.

But while story beats may be missing, the thematic core of the story is unaltered, and watching Light and L’s conflicting philosophies of justice and the legal process collide is as fun in song as it was on the page, in animated form, and in live-action (well, maybe not the Netflix live-action one).

Killing indirectly / Pen and ink and paper / Writing is the gun, I only have to aim 586s3t

If you’re a Death Note fan, all of the above should have you hyped. The only problem is that unless you live in London, can be free before Sunday, and can figure out a way to get into a sold-out show, you’re out of luck.

For now anyway. Though this run ends after just six performances, Death Note: The Musical seems like it’s going places. The cast is set for an appearance at Comic-Con to promote the show’s future and after selling out, extra performances had to be added, so I imagine this isn’t the end.

Whether this London success will mean a leap to Broadway remains to be seen, though the global popularity of Death Note should mean it’d sell out a New York run just as quickly as in London. It’s also notable that (according to the show’s promoter) four-fifths of the audience had never set foot in a theater before, so if producers are looking for a show that’ll bring a fresh audience through the doors, this may be it.

I’m hoping Death Note: The Musical encourages some of the other extravagant Japanese anime/manga stage shows to transfer to Western theaters. What else is there left to say, other than “This show Ryuks!”.

An episode for the ages.]]>

The Simpsons have been on the air since 1989, and they’ve covered a lot of ground over the last 34 years. One of the great things about the show is that we get a new “Treehouse of Horror” episode every year. The show’s creators recently broke down the legendary “anime” episode.

The 34th “Treehouse” episode took Westworld, The Babadook, and Death Note, making them Simpsons-like versions called Simpsonworld, the Pookadook, and Death Tome.

“Death Tome” was exceptional because it was styled just like an anime. In it, Lisa finds a book that lets her kill people by writing their names and deaths in it. Animation Director Rob Oliver talked about how that came about.

“I was extremely nervous. People had wanted it for so long that it could’ve easily been a swing and a miss.” Oliver said they hired the animation studio that worked on the original Death Note to get that authentic anime look.

That studio did “all the animation, all the design for that story.” According to consulting producer David Silverman, any notes they got from the studio were extremely minor.

“We were all very excited to do something like this,” Silverman said. “It was really a smart idea, I think, to engage a studio in Korea that actually worked on the very thing we were parodying.”

Oliver said he immensely enjoyed “seeing all the characters designed in anime.” Even Jailbird and Mr. Burns got the anime treatment. There are even some “blink and you miss it” moments like The Leftorium, Ned Flanders, the Captain (Horatio McCallister), and more. Silverman said he couldn’t get enough of it.

“I loved it. I thought they were beautiful, and it was so perfect, like, ‘yeah, that’s how I’d want to see them as animated characters.'”

Oliver revealed that Hank Azaria (who voices Chief Wiggum, Moe, and others) voiced the Shinigami monster, who’s hilariously named Steve in the episode. Despite his fears of a flop, Oliver said, “I think it really, really worked on so many levels. It really rang true to the original.”

The Simpsons is currently streaming on Disney Plus for those interested.
