Nothing quite like feeling your age.]]>
<![CDATA[

The internet sure knows how to make us feel old. Whether it’s seeing Gen Alpha kids using like “sigma” and “skibbidi” (seriously, what do those even mean?), or the sudden realization that a movie you watching as a kid is turning an obscenely old age — social media is just relentlessly ageist. 2xe4o

Today, Netflix decided it was the perfect time to highlight a number of films turning 20 this year. In case you don’t feel like doing the math, that means we have just celebrated the 20th anniversary of movies released in 2004 — like The Notebook (pause for gasp) and Ella Enchanted. I’ll give you a moment to process that.

Of course, these are just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty more movies that hit the two-decade mark. Let’s start with The Notebook, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, which set the bar for unrealistic (and sometimes heartbreaking) relationship goals. It was released on June 25, 2004 — exactly 20 years ago.

Ella Enchanted, starring our favorite princess Anne Hathaway, was released on April 9, 2004. This one might not be a huge shock, since you probably it from your childhood — or teenage years. But to really drive home how much time has ed, here are a few more titles: Before Sunset, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, is a sequel that made us believe in love again, and yes, it came out in 2004.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? No, Gen Z, I’m not talking about Ariana Grande’s album, I mean the movie. Yup, that was also 2004 — 20 years ago. Closer, with Natalie Portman? Also hitting its 20-year mark in 2024. And if you’re thinking about how you were in school when these movies came out, you’re not alone. One on X commented, “I was a freshman in high school when all these came out.”

A lesser-known film to some, but a favorite among cinephiles, is House of Flying Daggers, a wuxia martial arts masterpiece directed by Zhang Yimou, which had more international acclaim than your average Chinese film. And yes, it was released in 2004. Also ing the list is The Prince and Me, featuring 2000s queen Julia Stiles alongside Luke Mably, as well as Van Helsing, the action-horror flick starring Hugh Jackman in a rare break from his musical roles. It too came out in 2004.

Another film turning 20 this year is Wimbledon, starring Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany. While some Gen Z’s might think of Paul Bettany as Marvel’s Vision — or even as Johnny Depp’s texting partner — Millennials will him as Peter Colt, a struggling tennis pro. It was essentially the Challengers of the 2000s.

If this nostalgic trip down memory lane hasn’t made you feel old enough yet, here’s a little more: this author was only five years old when all of these movies came out, and doesn’t most of them. Hope that adds a bit to your existential dread!

Here's what to add to your watchlist if you're craving the bittersweet wholesomeness of 'Little Miss Sunshine'.]]>
<![CDATA[

Few films bottled up a complex mix of melancholy and optimism quite like Little Miss Sunshine.

The 2006 dramedy, directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, follows an eclectic family as they venture across the country so that budding beauty queen Olive (played by Abigail Breslin) can compete in a beauty pageant.

The all-star ensemble cast, which includes Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carrell, and Paul Dano, deliver performances that touch on both the funny bone and the heartstrings — to the point where Little Miss Sunshine is rightfully considered an indie cult classic.

The film went on to receive four Academy Award nominations, and is ed for its heartfelt depiction of unconventional family dynamics, mental health, and remaining hopeful in the face of life’s obstacles.

The effect of the movie can’t quite be put into words, but a few similar films have hit us in the feels in much the same way as Little Miss Sunshine. If you’re craving that slice of bittersweet wholesomeness, here’s 14 movies like Little Miss Sunshine (and where you can watch them).

1. Ladybird (2017) 5t1a6q

Ladybird and Little Miss Sunshine share a similar wavelength in that they both follow young female protagonists going about their ordinary lives. Both Olive and the titular Ladybird (played by Saoirse Ronan) have dreams to make it out of their small towns, but their journeys are complicated by family . Ladybird is big on both laughs and tears, and ends on a note of optimism despite the roadblocks the characters face. You can watch Ladybird on Amazon Prime or Apple TV

2. Silver Linings Playbook (2012) 4y5v4h

In what follows like a grown-up version of Little Miss Sunshine, David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook delves deeper into themes of mental health, and the connections we make to soothe it. Carrell’s character finds a match in Bradley Cooper’s Pat Solitano, who wrestles with his demons with both humor and heart. Both Silver Linings Playbook and Little Miss Sunshine end on a somewhat musical note, speaking to the optimism that courses through both films. Silver Linings Playbook is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Apple TV

3. Booksmart (2019) rh56

Leaning moreso into the comedic aspects of the dramedy genre, Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart feels like the older sister of Little Miss Sunshine. The misadventures of the protagonists — played by Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever — might be what Olive would face as she enters highschool, with all three characters possessing the same loveable misfit energy. While it is certainly a comedy, Booksmart hits emotional touchpoints with a sense of levity much like Little Miss Sunshine. Booksmart is available to stream on Amazon Prime or Apple TV.

4. (500) Days of Summer (2009) 1mg6

There’s a cheerful quirkiness that courses through both Little Miss Sunshine and (500) Days of Summer, despite the two films’ depiction of sad themes. (500) Days of Summer follows the demise of a relationship between Tom (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zoey Deschanel), and while romance doesn’t play a big role in Little Miss Sunshine, both films explore the complexity of relationships. Both movies sustain the “feel-good” factor even when their characters are in crisis. (500) Days of Summer is available to stream on Hulu or Apple TV.

5. Ruby Sparks (2012) 3h1h6c

The parallels between Ruby Sparks and Little Miss Sunshine might boil down to the fact that they are both directed by Faris and Dayton. The duo reunite with Dano for Ruby Sparks, which follows a struggling novelist who wills his female protagonist into existence and promptly falls in love. Like Little Miss Sunshine before it, Ruby Sparks packs an emotional punch while delivering rom-com style laughs. Ruby Sparks is available to stream on Amazon Prime or Apple TV

6. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) 527248

While it is undoubtedly bigger in scale, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty possesses much of the same thematic points as Little Miss Sunshine. Both Olive and Walter (played by Ben Stiller) are eager to outgrow their current situations, and embark on a tumultuous journey filled with laughs, tears, and important lessons. Stiller, who also directed Walter Mitty, even cited Little Miss Sunshine as an influence while making the film. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is available to stream on Amazon Prime or Apple TV

7. Juno (2007) u5f1e

Juno and Little Miss Sunshine share a similar sense of humor, and both find ways to make us laugh even during challenging moments. The 2007 movie follows the pregnancy journey of a teenage protagonist (played by Elliot Page), warming hearts with its endearing wit and optimistic sheen. Juno is available to stream on Hulu or Apple TV.

8. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) 533k58

While it certainly heads to darker corners than Little Miss Sunshine, Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower treads similar territory in its depiction of adolescence and mental health. Logan Lerrman stars in the coming-of-age tale as Charlie, a highschool student navigating the complexity of friendships and growing up. It might not pack the comedic chops of Little Miss Sunshine, but it certainly dances in the sweet spot of feel-good and emotionally resonant. Watch The Perks of Being a Wallflower on Hulu or Amazon Prime

9. Eighth Grade (2018) e1nb

The influence of social media on a young person’s life comes to the fore in Eighth Grade, an A24 film directed by Bo Burnham. Much like Olive before her, Kayla Day (played by Elsie Fisher) is a quirky heroine you can’t help but root for, even as the weight of social expectations seems pinned against her. In some alternate universe, Kayle and Olive are best friends. Eighth Grade is available to stream on Hulu or Amazon Prime.

10. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) 5y4f3w

You might think the only similarities would be in the word “sunshine,” and while Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is certainly headier than Little Miss Sunshine, both films are driven by sentimentality. The latter stars Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey as a recently separated couple who undergo surgery to remove their memories of each other. Needless to say, many tears and fond memories ensue, making for a happy-sad tale with all the traces of Little Miss Sunshine. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is available to stream on Peacock or Apple TV

11. About A Boy (2002) 5m1l1n

Another precocious protagonist is given the spotlight in About A Boy, the heartwarming 2002 film starring Hugh Grant, Toni Collette, and Nicholas Hoult. About A Boy is more schmaltzy than Little Miss Sunshine, and follows more like a rom-com in its depiction of an unlikely friendship, but it certainly possesses that same feel-good, childlike factor. About A Boy is available to stream on Amazon Prime or Apple TV

12. Mid90s (2018) 323tj

Complicated family dynamics and the struggles of adolescence inform Jonah Hill’s 2018 directorial debut film Mid90s. Like Little Miss Sunshine before it, the coming-of-age movie details a quirky young protagonist’s journey to growth, influenced by family and guided by their tenacity. Both Little Miss Sunshine and Mid90s also have the naturalistic visual style that makes the story feel authentic. Mid90s is available to stream on Hulu or Amazon Prime

13. The Way, Way Back (2013) 5v6h68

Carrell and Collette reunite on The Way, Way Back, a coming-of-age story about a hapless teenager who finds from adults. Duncan (played by Liam James) escapes his chaotic family to befriend a worker at a local water park, with hilarious hijinks and emotional moments unfolding along the way. The Way, Way Back is available to stream on Amazon Prime or Apple TV.

14. Captain Fantastic (2016) 663y5h

The Hoover family of Little Miss Sunshine met their match with the Cash clan, the dysfunctional family at the centre of Captain Fantastic. The film follows two parents (played by Viggo Mortensen and Kathryn Hahn) as they raise their children in the wilderness, chronicling the fallout after Hahn’s character dies. Fans of chaotic family dynamics will find much to laugh at (and almost cry) in Captain Fantastic. It is available to stream on Hulu or Amazon Prime.

She's got taste! ]]>
<![CDATA[

After what feels like forever, singer/songwriter/actress extraordinaire Ariana Grande is back with a new single ahead of her seventh album, Eternal Sunshine.

Grande’s last big album era was Positions, released in 2020. As much as I hate to it it, 2020 was four years ago (I know; it is shocking) so fans are way past ready for a new Ari project.

This isn’t to say she hasn’t been busy; over the last year, Grande’s been filming Wicked and popping up in the news for her personal life rather than her professional. Aside from a few features here and there, Grande’s new single, “Yes, And?” is her first new song in a while.

The new song precedes her newest album which, in true modern pop star fashion, she cryptically teased in the accompanying music video. AG7’s official title is Eternal Sunshine and it releases on March 8.

Wait, Eternal Sunshine? Like the movie with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet">social media, saying, “nothing is crazier than getting to work with and spend time with someone whom you’ve idolized and adored since before you could speak.” 6p2n5c

While Grande hasn’t confirmed the album’s title is inspired by the 2004 film, it’s probably because she feels like she doesn’t have to. If Eternal Sunshine is anything like the film it’s probably inspired by, it’s sure to be a masterpiece.

From sweet and charming to downright menacing, the late actor had done it all.]]>
<![CDATA[

Perennially familiar, constantly compelling, and a consistent presence come award season, Tom Wilkinson ed away on Dec. 30, 2023, leaving behind nearly half a century of iconic performances.

The actor’s death has fans looking back on an incredible body of work. Here’s a brief retrospective of some of his most memorable roles.

The Full Monty 3y706x

Nobody knows what works in show business. On paper, a story about a group of unemployed middle-aged ex-blue collar workers taking their clothes off in public doesn’t seem like a franchise launchpad, but darned if The Full Monty didn’t go on to become a hit musical, a stage play, a television series, and one of the British Film Institute’s best movies of the 20th century.

Playing Gerald, an out-of-work factory foreman with slick dance moves, Wilkinson was recognized with a Best Actor in a ing Role BAFTA, in addition to a SAG award for the film’s ensemble cast. Wilkinson even reprised the role in 2023 for the film’s FX/Hulu follow-up miniseries.

Selma 5c95d

Following in the footsteps of so many great historical dramas, Selma went with a British actor to breathe life into one of America’s presidents. The film put Wilkinson in the part of Lyndon B. Johnson, presenting him as an unsympathetic barrier to Martin Luther King Jr.’s crusade. The history is pretty backward, but the message is clear, and Wilkinson’s performance is, as always, spot on.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 5n323g

In 2004, Tom Wilkinson played the pioneering doctor behind Lacuna, an NYC medical office specializing in burning the memories out of people’s skulls in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. If you don’t that Wilkinson was in the film, it’s probably nothing to worry about.

The Kennedys 4wn6h

It’s hard to think of a darker, more complex historical figure from the last century than Joe Kennedy, Sr., patriarch of the Kennedy family and stalwart proponent of surreptitious lobotomies. Those are the shoes that Tom Wilkinson stepped into for The Kennedys, the prestige biopic miniseries chronicling the lives of one of America’s most recognizable families. Wilkinson plays the part with drive and obsession, making the character all the more haunting, elevating the sometimes-stilted dialogue in ways that most actors would struggle to accomplish.

Shakespeare in Love 335i5w

One speed that Tom Wilkinson could always be counted on to hit hard: The barely-keeping-it-together, angry money man. It’s a part he brought to life in The Ghost in the Darkness, appearing in just a couple of scenes while permanently changing the way people think “I don’t want to hear about this anymore” when their coworkers start talking about their babies.

And he did it again a few years later in Shakespeare in Love, playing theater financier Fennyman. Pushing the business part of art in an unblinking performance that involves more torture than you’d expect, Elizabethan ruffs notwithstanding. For any of the film’s other shortcomings, Fennyman gives audiences a character who really knows how to deal with theater people: By threatening to burn them.

Michael Clayton 1x4i57

It was 2007, and Hollywood was still blindly flailing at the Next Big Thing. One big swing came with Michael Clayton, the aesthetic and dramatic middle ground between Thank You for Smoking and The Bourne Identity.

It wasn’t the biggest hit, and we’re not still enjoying the Michael Clayton Cinematic Universe some 17 years later, but it’s a solid thriller with a lot of tension. In it, Wilkinson plays Arthur Edens, a high-profile attorney in a spiral thanks to a severe, public manic episode. It’s a characteristically powerful performance and one that saw Wilkinson nominated for an Academy Award for Best ing Actor.

Batman Begins a453

It’s hard to overstate how much Batman Begins changed the way that Hollywood approached superhero movies. Relative to almost everything else that had come out up to that point, it was camp-free, unwinking, and treated its main character – again, comparatively – like a real human being.

Part of that meant pitting him against other real human beings – not monsters or mad scientists, but ambitious men, driven by something closer to pragmatism than mustache-twirling villainy. Wilkinson portrayed Carmine Falcone, an organized crime boss who finds himself on the wrong end of a Batman-induced, spotlight-heavy citizen’s arrest. He’s a creep. He’s intimidating. He also gets gassed by one of those mustache-twirling mad scientists once the movie’s second half kicks off. Progress takes time.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel h3f52

Slowly released around the world from 2011 to 2013, receiving wave after wave of positive reviews and a box office reception beyond anyone’s expectations, and representing the closest thing that audiences will ever experience to an Avengers-style team-up of elderly British actors, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is charming. It’s the story of a group of retired people, all hoping to find a new start by picking up and moving to a badly misrepresented retirement community in India.

Starring alongside Bill Nighy, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Dev Patel, Wilkinson plays a former judge, returning to the town where he was raised after being away from the place for decades. Without giving anything away, his story is heartbreaking, and his performance is layered. Like we said, it’s a very sweet film.

John Adams 23383x

As the golden age of television pushed forward, HBO found itself in unprecedented territory, suddenly getting away with putting out prestige miniseries on subjects that seemed unfilmable a few years prior. They pushed boundaries. They challenged preconceptions. They dared to ask “How dumb can we make our lead actors’ wigs before it gets distracting?”

And while they wouldn’t find a concrete answer to that question until 2023 with the release of House of the Dragon, they inched closer to it with John Adams, the historical drama documenting the American Revolution and the lives of the founding fathers. It was a difficult task — Hamilton was still a far-off dream, so they had to do the whole thing without rapping. Still, a stellar cast, including Wilkinson as an almost dangerously crotchety Benjamin Franklin, helped to carry the series to over a dozen Emmys, a handful of Golden Globes, and a pair of Screen Actors Guild awards.

Jim Carrey is reportedly interested in doing a sequel to one of his most acclaimed movies. Despite the amount of hit films the star has been in over the decades, Carrey’s generally averse to making follow-ups, thanks to the lackluster reception of Ace Ventura 2 back in the day. He did break his rule for 2014’s Dumb and Dumber To, though, and he’s about to do so again for the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel. So, it seems he’s changed his mind on the matter by this point and the next one of his classics that he wants to do a follow-up for is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Insider Daniel Richtman has shared on his Patreon page that he’s heard the actor has made it known that he’d be up for returning for some sort of continuation of the 2004 psychological romantic drama. No further details are available at this time, however, so it’s unclear if the project is actually formally underway or it’s just something Carrey is discussing with the studio. Eternal Sunshine featured the beloved star as Joel, who goes to a specialist firm that can erase memories to remove the pain of splitting up with his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). During the procedure, though, he changes his mind and fights to save the memories of his time with his former partner from being wiped from his brain. To say anything else would be to spoil it, but the film does leave the door open for more from these characters, so a sequel could certainly make sense. Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind That said, it might be difficult to get the talent involved with the original back together again. Director Michel Gondry hasn’t helmed a new movie in a while and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman’s never penned a sequel before. It would also probably all depend on whether Winslet would want to do another one, too, as the whole appeal of the first film is the couple’s chemistry. Tell us, though, do you have any interest in Jim Carrey starring in an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2? Let us know in the comments section below.

A beloved movie that saw Jim Carrey in a role that helped cement him as a dramatic actor is now available on Netflix for your viewing pleasure.]]>
<![CDATA[

Netflix is a treasure trove of countless movies and TV shows you might not have otherwise encountered, and one of Jim Carrey’s best films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, has just hit the platform. Back in the ‘90s, Carrey was one of the biggest performers in Hollywood. He first came to prominence with the release of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and despite most reviews being less than kind and some uncomfortably transphobic attempts at humor, it was a moderate success, with similarly histrionic roles in the likes of The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Batman Forever, The Cable Guy and Liar Liar following in quick succession and cementing his fame. Although he began to move away from such performances with reality series satire The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine was where the breadth of his dramatic talent truly became apparent to many audiences. Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind The mind-bending film sees the introverted Joel discover that his free-spirited ex-girlfriend Clementine underwent a procedure to erase their two-year relationship from her memory and decides to do the same for himself to spare himself the pain of ing her. Much of the action takes place within his mind as he experiences their relationship in reverse as it’s removed, beginning from the breakup and deterioration and progressing backwards to when they were happy together, whereupon he decides he’s made a mistake and attempts to escape into other parts of his memory, bringing the idealized mental construct of Clementine with him to save her from erasure. The title of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes from Eloisa to Abelard, an 18th century poem about an illicit yet romantic affair between a nun and her tutor. The line is part of a rumination on the function of memory, suggesting there may be bliss in being unaware of past troubles but also that without pain there can be no joy, while the poem itself periodically postulates that true love will ultimately transcend whatever’s thrown at it, as Joel spends much of the film attempting to prove.

From classics such as the Ace Ventura films to modern hits like Sonic the Hedgehog, Jim Carrey has delivered a multitude of zany, erratic and above all wildly hilarious performances. A mime, dancer and actor all in one – he’s portrayed some of the most unhinged characters ever seen in cinema. As such, it can be a bit jarring when you watch him in a serious role. Carrey’s dramatic efforts are few and far between, but the ones that exist surely pack a punch. One of these is the 2004 romantic drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which hits Netflix next month. In the film, the actor stars as a man who, after suffering from heartbreak, enlists the services of a dubious company which claims it can erase the memories he has of his ex-girlfriend. Said girlfriend, an eccentric and outspoken girl named Clementine, is played by none other than Kate Winslet. Compared to Carrey’s character, who dresses and acts in the most unassuming of ways, Winslet’s role is vibrant and energetic. From her dyed hair to her bright orange coat, her influence on Carrey is the ‘sunshine’ which he desperately wants to forget but simply cannot get himself to. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Written by Charlie Kaufman, the screenwriter behind films like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, the pic features an incredibly dense plot that somehow manages to engage audiences without fail through its if not sympathetic, at least highly relatable characters. A dominant theme of Kaufman’s work is loneliness, and here too it is presented as a force which nothing – not even pure love – can ever overcome. Along with a wealth of other brand new films and series that were announced earlier today, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will begin streaming on Netflix starting August 1st.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Michel Gondry’s oddball 2004 favorite, is the latest feature film in line to be repackaged for the small-screen, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Anonymous Content, the production house behind such bankable hits as Mr. Robot and the dormant True Detective, is developing the TV spinoff series, enlisting a helping hand in Steve Golin – producer on the original genre mash-up – to help oversee production. It’s early doors on this one, according to THR, though we understand screenwriter Zev Borow (Forever, Chuck) has opened negotiations to ink the script. Exactly who Anonymous and Universal Cable Productions plan to cast as estranged couple Joel and Clementine – originally portrayed by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, respectively – is up for question, Established IP continues to be fertile ground for broadcast and streaming outlets, and one need only look toward the stacked TV lineup going into the fall season for evidence of a trend that shows no sign of letting up – The Exorcist, Lethal Weapon and The Departed populate the docket, to name but three. They haven’t all been slam dunks, either; Minority Report was one early causality to be taken off the airwaves after only one season. Fargo is the textbook example of an existing property being carried over to the series format, and in many ways, Noah Hawley’s acclaimed spinoff can be seen as ground zero in this movie-to-TV phenomenon Can Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind find similar success? We’ll be keeping tabs on this latest offshoot as more information comes to light.

By definition, it seems, romantic comedies are synonymous with cheesy rubbish. And so, many of us (I don’t know what category “we” fall into but we know who we are and there are plenty of us) dread the types of movies that get released around Valentine’s Day. How did it get to be this way? In my estimation, it’s kind of like with any genre of storytelling when the rhythms and subjects of a certain style of story or movie become so popular that they grow tired and cliché. They probably began in the right place, and were tapping into some aspect of human experience that was relatable and emotionally satisfying, but are so overused and outdated that they’re dull at best and horribly irritating at worst.]]>

They probably began in the right place, and were tapping into some aspect of human experience that was relatable and emotionally satisfying, but are so overused and outdated that they’re dull at best and horribly irritating at worst. There remains reason to hope, however. Despite the allure of pumping out rom-com trash that will inevitably make money because there will always be a market for selling people their own tears, there are plenty of movies that are able to quench our thirst for emotional catharsis without exploiting our uncontrollable lust for romance. They tend to require some sneakiness on the part of the filmmakers, but deep down they hit us right where romantically comedic or humorously heartfelt movies always have: right square in our heartbones. Here are 6 movies that tell other romantic comedies, “Don’t associate me with you! I’m different and actually good.” Is it clear what I’m trying to say about them? I’m saying they don’t suck. We’re going to be inundated with romantic movie talk this week so we might as well make the best of it. Continue reading on the next page…

I think we can safely suggest that this decade has been incredible for films. Think about how far in these past ten years filmmaking has been pushed forward to reach the pinnacle of technical perfection. The further we get away from it, the more I think this will be known as the technical transformation of film. We've seen digital film burst forward due to the dawn of the internet and cheapness of materials to both amateur and professional filmmakers. From Danny Boyle & David Lynch's embracing of the DV format to the superb quality of the RED, mastered by the likes of David Fincher. The rise in 3D came in the latter half of the decade and the push towards photo realism in visual effects has become huge. Look for example at the rise in performance capture from Gollum to the Na'vi, from The Polar Express to Avatar, the leaps filmmakers have taken have been extraordinary. Also we should take a look at some of the influential characters from overseas. Mexican cinema was well and truly here by the middle of the decade with Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu bringing over a new exciting cinema style to a western audience and seguing that sensibility into more mainstream work. We have the return of Eastern European austerity in the form of Michael Haneke, who has put arthouse audiences through the pain of watching films which are the true definition of uncomfortable viewing. ]]>

We also have the return of Eastern European austerity in the form of Michael Haneke, who has put arthouse audiences through the pain of watching films which are the true definition of uncomfortable viewing. We should be proud of this decade. Sure, the mass production of films in Hollywood resulting in over 14 films released per week has given us some truly rotten titles that will be listed amongst the worst EVER made(Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, Marley and Me, Catwoman, to name a few), but we’ve also had some of the finest. With that in mind, check out our picks for the top twenty films of the decade. Continue reading on the next page…
