Fairy Tail never quite reached the same heights as the Big 3 anime, but Hiro Mashima’s 2006 series is still considered one of the best fantasy shonen titles of all time. Following wizards Natsu Dragneel, Lucy Heartfilia, and a diverse cast of powerful magic s, Fairy Tail is a powerful tale of friendship and family.

Set in a world where magic is both commonplace and often extremely deadly, many wizards belong to guilds like the eponymous Fairy Tail in order to find stable work and safety in numbers. Belonging to a guild isn’t a requirement for wizards, however, and some powerful mages practice magic alone. It’s difficult to gauge just how strong the characters in Fairy Tail are but these seven are considered the most powerful in the series.

7. Laxus Dreyer

The grandson of Guild Master Makarov, Laxus comes from a line of powerful wizards. He is a Dragon Slayer with Lightning Magic and is able to conjure lightning bolts to attack his opponents at a distance or at close-range. His magic is also great for defense, allowing him to create shields or move at lightning-speed. Laxus is first introduced as an arrogant and untrustworthy mage, but his redemption arc is one of the best in Fairy Tail

6. Irene Belserion

Irene is the one of the strongest of the Spriggan 12 and created Dragon Slayer magic 400 years before the story takes place. She is known for her unparalleled skill in enchantment magic and has the ability to manipulate objects, people, landscapes, and climates. She also possesses Universe One, a magic which manipulates world geography in order to bring people or things to particular locations at will.

5. August

August Dragneel in Fairy Tail

The child of Zeref and Mavis, August is a powerful mage often referred to as the “Wizard King.” His ability, Copy, allows him to master another magician’s magic while also nullifying it. In addition to this overpowered ability, he also possesses superhuman strength and durability.

4. Gildarts Clive

Gildarts is an S-Class mage of the Fairy Tail guild and also served as its fifth guild master. Unlike most mages, Gildarts is physically strong and highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat. Combined with his devastatingly powerful Crush ability, he’s a tough wizard to beat.

3. Zeref Dragneel

Zeref, Natsu’s immortal brother, is the most powerful dark mage of all time. He is capable of using death waves to kill living creatures and of creating countless demons to carry on his whims. His strongest power, the Curse of Contradictions, is also his biggest bane and kills anyone who Zeref grows to love.

2. Acnologia

Acnologia in Fairy Tail

Acnologia is the ultimate villain in Fairy Tail and one of the first Dragon Slayers. His 400 years of life and hatred twisted him into a villain beyond recognition bent on destroying all Dragons and Dragon Slayers. Even Zeref feared Acnologia’s power. His abilities, like turning into a dragon and eating magic, are undeniably powerful but even then he doesn’t reach the top ranking on this list…

1. Natsu Dragneel

Natsu Dragneel in Fairy Tail

Natsu as number one is a controversial choice, but hear me out. While Natsu isn’t the strongest on paper, he never backs down from a challenge and inevitably defeats any opponent he faces. It’s this tenacity and perseverance that sets Natsu apart from other Fairy Tail characters and makes him the strongest of them all.

Sometimes, just when you think the book is closed, the story finds a way to turn a new page. It’s been a long wait, but for fans of the wildly popular Fairy Tail series, the magic isn’t over just yet.

More than five years after the original series concluded, the wizards of the Fairy Tail guild are back with a new sequel, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. In 2018, just a year after the mainline manga concluded, Kodansha began publishing Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest.

This sequel manga pickes up the story one year after the momentous events that saw the defeat of the nefarious Zeref and the draconic Acnologia. Not ones to rest on their laurels, Natsu Dragneel and his merry band of Fairy Tail wizards embark on the eponymous 100 Years Quest. This legendary mission takes them to the northern continent of Guiltina where they must face the daunting task of sealing five dragon gods.

Episode 1 did an excellent job setting the stage, reintroducing the characters we’ve missed, and hinting at the immense challenges to come.

Another Sequel addition to the Fairy Tail series is making its way into our screens and hearts soon. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, has finally received an official release date and will be following the continuation of the narrative, following the conclusion of the original series.

Fairy Tail, which packed a punch with action, humor, and themes of camaraderie, will have its official sequel follow in the same footsteps. The popular shōnen series concluded several years ago, leaving a void for dedicated viewers for a while. However, 100 Years Quest aims to close that gap, bringing Natsu and the gang back in action as they prepare to face new problems, all while exploring new places.

What is Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest about?

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, based on the same manga’s name and a sequel to the original Fairy Tail manga, takes center stage a year after the defeat of Zeref and Acnologia. Natsu Dragneel and his team from the Fairy Tail guild will now embark on a mission that has not been solved in over a century, known as the 100 Years Quest.

For this assignment, they will venture to the northern region of the continent, where they will attempt to seal the Five Dragon Gods, a new class of enemies with abilities far greater than any kind they have yet encountered. However, a new member of the crew with a secret alignment to an unknown cause is also expected to impede their mission.

Where and when can we watch episode 1 of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest?

It was revealed as part of the Summer 2024 anime calendar that Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest will be coming to television sometime in July. Now that it’s official and set to go, the first episode of the follow-up series will premiere on July 7, 2024, at 17:30 JST. However, this release date is only confirmed for Japanese residents, as it will be available on TV Tokyo and other related stations in Japan. As of now, the release date has not yet been announced for international viewers, but Crunchyroll is expected to be the series’ official streaming platform.

The animation duties for Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest are entrusted to J.C. Staff, a renowned studio with experience in popular shōnen titles like One-Punch Man and Food Wars. This shift in animation studios comes after A-1 Pictures, Studio DEEN, and Satelight collaborated on the original series.

Thankfully, the heart and soul of Fairy Tail will remain intact, with the original Japanese voice cast reprising their iconic roles. Tetsuya Kakihara returns as Natsu Dragneel, Aya Hirano as Lucy Heartfilia, Sayaka Ohara as Erza Scarlet, and Yuichi Nakamura as Gray Fullbuster. The voices of Wendy Marvell (Satomi Satou), Happy (Rie Kugimiya), and the rest of the beloved Fairy Tail crew are also expected to return. New cast will include Yumi Uchiyama as Kiria, ItaruYamamoto as Mole, Mugihito as Eleseria, YuichiroUmehara as Merhobia, and Kenji Hamada as Skullion.

Chapter 156, titled “Brian,” began in the town of Hawthorn, a port city in Gultina. In there, we see Jellal getting ready to leave because he has already decided to return to Ishgar, but before he fully exchanges goodbyes with the squad, he informs Ezra that he intends to the Fairy Tail team and that she should put in a good word for him. Elsewhere, we see Natsu and the gang enjoying a great time in the pub while asking for directions to the guild. They are then Briefly stopped by a suspicious-looking figure.

The clownish character, Brain, as referred to by the bartender, then continues to hurl his hand at Natsu’s cat companions in an attempt to consume them, only to be hit with Natsu’s trademark flames, which send him plummeting to the ground. After quickly absorbing the flames, which astonished the entire gang, he sets up and then leaves, but not before the bartender gives us brief information on who he was, stating he belonged to The Dark Guild Fire and Flame and warning them of the horrible nature of his sect.

Readers of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest may anticipate learning more about this sinister Guild in the chapter 157. Could they be the last obstacle standing in their way of meeting the last living Dragon God, Ignia? Or are they just one of the few major villains we will see? Finally, as the series’ creator, Hiro Mashima does so quite frequently, we can also prepare to see off-shot s of other series characters involved in the series.

It’s been five years. Five whole years without Fairy Tail. That means we’ve been in a rough patch for 1,826 days, deprived of Natsu, Lucy, and Erza. This drought has been so harsh that I bet you’re thinking “If only there were a sequel to Fairy Tail.” Well, buckle up, because I have some news.

In case you might have missed it, allow me to jog your memory: back in 2021, two years after the anime ended, it was announced that Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest would actually get adapted onto the smaller screen. Needless to say, everyone was loaded and ready for Natsu to come back with all-new adventures. Sadly, for the longest time, news has been slim, to say the least. Well… until today, that is.

When is Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest coming out?

Fairy Tail

Gather your guild, because Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest will be debuting on our screens in July 2024. The news comes from Shonen Magazine, which not only confirmed the month for the initial broadcast but also provided additional information regarding the anime. The Chief Director and Director will be Shinji Ishihira and Toshinori Watanabe, respectively, backed by the animation studio J.C.STAFF.

All nine seasons of Fairy Tail were animated by A-1 Pictures from 2009 until 2019, but it appears that a change is on the horizon. While fans wholeheartedly loved the A-1 adaptation — which is responsible for Kaguya-sama: Love is War and Sword Art Online — the Japanese animation studio J.C.STAFF will be taking the reins for this next project. Some of their biggest creations include Toradora! and the second season of One Punch Man.

Aside from the aforementioned information, not much else is known just yet. However, we do know that the Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest manga is still ongoing, and its timeline falls one year after the trio finally defeated Zeref and Acnologia. In this sequel, Natsu and the crew from the Fairy Tail wizard guild embark on the “100 Years Quest,” which is a mission that has never been completed in over a century — allegedly. This time, they will also be heading to the northern continent of Guiltina to reach that milestone.

But if your memory is failing you in any way, fear not! Until July arrives, you’ll surely have plenty of time to binge-watch all the seasons, just in time for the sequel to finally reach our screens. In the meantime, Fairy Tail is available to be watched on Crunchyroll.

Over the course of the decade of its run, Hiro Mashima’s bestselling manga series Fairy Tail became a staple of the shonen genre.

Although not a part of the big 3, Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece, it comes immediately after that ranking, on the same or similar level as other over-a-decade-old long-running popular fantasy/supernatural/sci-fi shonen like Gintama, Full Metal Alchemist, Hunter x Hunter, Hitman Reborn!, among other examples.

Over the years, Fairy Tail became entrenched in the collective consciousness of avid anime fans everywhere, as its vividly colorful mages became highly recognizable, even to those who had yet to watch a single episode.

As often happens with long-running series that span many years, Fairy Tail has a lot of content to sift through, and not everyone has the patience or time to dedicate to getting through everything, filler episodes and arcs included.

So, here’s what you need to know about the order of the Fairy Tail arcs: whether they are canon or filler, which chapters and episodes they span, and when they were released.

The chronological list of the ‘Fairy Tail’ arcs

Fairy Tail Natsu and Lucy
Screengrabs via TV Tokyo

If we were to go along the chronology of the world itself, we’d start with the prequel Fairy Tail: Zero, which follows the guild’s founder Mavis Vermillion, and what led up to her creating Fairy Tail. The story can be found compiled into a single 13-chapter volume, separate from the rest of the series.

However, instead of starting here – which you could – it would probably be best to go along with the anime’s release date order.

  • Macao Arc (canon) – Manga chapters 1-3; Anime episodes 1-2 (Oct. 2009)
  • Daybreak Arc (canon) – Manga chapters 4-9; Anime episodes 3-4 (Oct. – Nov. 2009)

  • Phantom Lord Arc (canon) – Manga chapters 47-69; Anime episodes 21-29 (March 2010 – May 2010)

  • 100 Years Quest Arc (canon, sequel) – Fairy Tail: 100 Years chapters 1–??; Anime episodes TBA

It should be worth noting that the anime series also has 2 additional movies and 9 OVAs. If you’ve gone through the hours upon hours that make up the whole series and would like to see the return of our eclectic guild of mages, we should expect to hear of a release window confirmation for the anime adaptation of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest sometime this year.
