Were all Vault-Tec employees required to be evil, or was that just a perk?]]>
<![CDATA[

There are few entities in the Fallout universe as diabolical as Vault-Tec Corporation. Though the company was supposed to build bunkers to protect Americans in the case of nuclear annihilation, it squandered its ample government-given resources to manufacture some of the most unhinged, human-rights-violating, mad-cap experiments ever featured in video game history. m4g

We’ve scraped the internet to find the worst bunkers imaginable and Vault-Tec doesn’t disappoint. Our selection involves supplementary material and cannon vaults alike, so grab an ice-cold Nuka Cola and strap in for the top 10 Vault-Tec Vaults that make nuclear fallout look like a walk in the park.

10. Vault 70 181vi

Art by Ash

Kicking things off on the light side of the horror spectrum, we have Vault 70. 70 hasn’t graced any games, but it was designed for Fallout 3. Located in Utah, the bunker was built for the Mormon church, which financed its building. There isn’t much known about how large the vault would be, but design notes show that Vault-Tec’s chief concern was pushing the highly religious inhabitants to the brink.

It wasn’t through violence or drugs, however, as Vault-Tec is so want to use. Instead, their jumpsuit extruders, aka the thing that manufactures the dweller’s clothes, was scheduled to break down in a matter of months. We’ll likely never know what the outcome of the social experiment was but it’s pretty hilarious to think about.

9. Vault 77 1q433f

puppet man comic via Penny Arcade

As described in the Fallout Bible, Vault 77 was designed to hold 1000 people, but only one man was ever let in. The lone Vault dweller spent more than a year in complete isolation before discovering Vault-Tec’s hidden surprise: a crate of “puppet friends.” Isolation can do terrible things to a person’s mind. It’s been linked to decreased white matter in the brain – specifically, those areas involved with critical thinking and emotional control – and our boy was no exception.

He was quickly beset by a litany of mental health issues, mostly centered around one Vault Boy hand puppet. Survivor 77 eventually left the Vault and lived a life full of adventure, misery, and a ton of murder. Though The Puppet Man never appears in game, you can read his adventure in comic form, and find evidence of him in the Capital Wasteland.

8. Vault 118 2ns1k

Image via Fallout 4

Nothing says apocalypse like strict social hierarchy, and Vault 118 leaned hard into the idea of “everything in its place.” Buried under a bougie hotel, the vast majority of the vault was designed for just 10 uber-wealthy patrons. A second, much more cramped living space was dedicated to 300 working-class locals and was only accessible by walking through the rich-exclusive area.

Except none of that ever came to . Instead, once the luxurious side was completed, the wealthy halted construction and funneled the funds into the Robobrain project. Replacing their living breathing bodies with robots, the dwellers sealed the vault with only themselves – and one hapless human Overseer – inside, leaving the town’s population to die in the war.

7. Vault 106 6z6t5y

image via Fallout 3

Vault 106 seemed perfect on paper. None of its systems were designed to shut down and there were no weird social requirements. Everything went smoothly until 10 days after the doors were sealed, at which point the Overseer released hallucinogenic gases into the air filtration system. Residents quickly started feeling the effects, which included disorientation, delirium, and eventually violent behaviors.

Like most of the Vault-Tec experiments, it ended in disaster after the enraged masses overwhelmed the overseer and their limited security personnel. The Vault’s systems are still very much intact meaning the damage is far from over. Anyone who dares enter the vault is almost immediately subjected to massive doses of the drug leaving it uninhabitable.

6. Vault 112 64115o

image via Fallout 3

One of the smallest vaults on record, Vault 112 was only meant to house 85 dwellers. The bunker was outfitted with state-of-the-art Visitron Loungers, virtual reality chairs, that would allow residents to ostensibly live forever. The one caveat, the simulated utopias were under the complete control of the Overseer, who just so happened to be a megalomaniac psychopath with a penchant for torture.

The overseer trapped the inhabitants of Vault 112 in a simulated 1950’s suburban neighborhood where he twisted their minds while disguised as a prepubescent British girl named Betty. In the simulation, Betty was able to kill every inhabitant she wanted, then erase their memories, and the evidence, over and over again. Vault Tec’s failsafe for the program was just as sadistic. The only way to release the dwellers would kill them instantly, but hey, at least it was designed to leave the cruel Overseer trapped alone indefinitely.

5. Vault 12 e1k56

Image via Fallout 2

While Vault 12’s experiments were horrific, they did lead to one of the finest Ghoul cities in the Fallout series, and most of the dwellers lived to tell their story. The vault was filled with some of the most nuclear war prepared minds California had to offer. When the bombs dropped, the population of the local city immediately rallied to the Vault, but little did they know Vault-Tec designed the doors to seal improperly. Residents were immediately dosed with radiation, and many were subjected to ghoulification.

Some of the would-be-inhabitants chose to leave the Vault after just 6 years, while others remained. Eventually, the Vault was overtaken by the brutish Ghoul leader, Set, who founded the Ghoul city of Necropolis.

4. Vault 68 3933z

image via Fallout Shelter

Vault 68 doesn’t appear in any of the games, but it can be found in the Fallout Bible. We don’t need much more than one sentence to imagine just how horrific the bunker would be. One of the biggest vaults mentioned, 68 could hold 1000 people. But naturally, there was a catch, 999 of the dwellers were men. The last was the only woman.

The story of Higa Kazuko from the Japanese Island of Anatahan paints a grotesque picture of how that untenable situation might have gone. During World War 2, 31 men washed ashore after their ships were sunk off the coast of the island. After Kazuko’s farmhand, who had claimed to be her husband, was murdered in the night, things took a turn for the worse. Over the next few weeks, 11 men wound up dead, and Kazuko fled into the jungle to survive. With nowhere to run, the lone female vault dweller likely lived a horrible life with the few men who survived alongside her.

3. Vault 95 1y145k

image via Fallout 4

We’re all a little addicted to something. Whether it be your morning cup of joe, or something a little harder, we all know how challenging it can be to let go of the things you love. Vault 95 was specially designed for chem addicts and was set up like a sort of rehabilitation center with mandatory meetings for inhabitants. A Vault-Tec employee hidden amongst the group waited 5 years after the bomb dropped before opening a secret stash of chems hidden in the Vault.

The once close-knit group of Vault Dwellers fell into chaos, some gave into their addiction, others hid away and tried to stay clean, and the rest exploded at Vault-Tec for their manipulation. In the end, the residents ripped themselves apart. With the few who remained ing various bandit factions in the Commonwealth.

2. Vault 108 734e41

image Via Youtube

One of the Vaults that lives rent-free in many player’s minds is Vault 108. Built to hold just under 500 residents for 40 years, the social experiment in the Vault centered around leaving important positions vacant to stress inhabitants out. Even the Overseer’s time was short, with Vault-Tec purposefully selecting a man they knew would die of cancer within 4 years.

Add to the lack of leadership the planned failure of key equipment like water filtration and electric generators and it was a perfect mixture for failure. But it wasn’t the above that brought the Vault to its knees, no, it was science! Tests recorded in the Vault centered around cloning experiments. A man named Gary was cloned 54 times, with each rendition becoming more and more hostile towards non-clones. Somehow the clones organized an escape (amazing considering their ability to speak included only the work “Gary”), murdered the remaining inhabitants, and took the Vault for themselves.

1. Vault 87 c5p3i

Super Mutant via Fallout 4 Centaur via Fallout 3

There are few things worse than Super Mutants in the Fallout franchise. The big green meanies chow down on human flesh and keep herds of Centaurs on hand (at least in the Capital Wasteland). Vault 87 housed the first Vault-Tec experiments with the dangerous mutagen, and you’d better believe that civilians were the first test subjects.

After the vault was sealed, the Evolutionary Experimentation Program kicked off immediately. Men and women were infected, with each gender evolving into an androgynous, thick-skinned, super buff, and very angry super mutant. Vault-Tec scientists burned through civilian subjects for more than a year before the mutants managed to take over, and for the next 200 years, they captured and turned any humans they could find.

We look forward to seeing how the Fallout TV series, now steaming on Amazon Prime, adds to this list.

What terrible secrets lie behind that door?]]>
<![CDATA[

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Fallout TV series

The Fallout TV show has landed, and to glowing reviews as well. The only downside is that it’s already over; all eight episodes dropped on Amazon last night and that wait for the next season is going to be tough especially considering how the first season ended.

Initially fans suspected that the series would be a re-telling of Fallout 3’s story, and whilst it does share some elements with the 2008 game, like a young vault dweller leaving the vault in search of their father, it’s mostly a wholly original adventure. Our protagonist Lucy comes from vault 33, a vault that seems pretty normal at first. Of course, if you’re familiar with Fallout lore, you know there’s no such thing as every vault is secretly an experiment on the unsuspecting inhabitants.

We quickly find out that Vault 33 is connected with two other vaults, 31 and 32, in order to share resources. It’s even possible to apply to marry someone from another vault if an individual is incapable of finding a partner in their own vault. This is exactly what Lucy does, however, things have gone horribly wrong in Vault 32 resulting in Lucy’s father, Hank, being kidnapped and brought to the surface which kick-starts the whole adventure.

So what is Vault 31? 159u

We know of Vault 31’s existence in the very first episode, as Hank mentions that’s where he came from, but the truth about it isn’t revealed until much later. Whilst Lucy continues searching for her father in the wasteland, her brother, Norm, who stayed underground, starts to uncover the awful truth about the three vaults.

Upon entering Vault 31, Norm meets a Brain-on-a-Roomba, (that’s literally what the Amazon Video X-Ray calls him) although he’s later revealed to be Bud Askins, a Vault-Tec executive tasked with guarding the secrets of 31. It turns out that everybody in 31 is an employee who was loyal to Vault-Tec and has been cryogenically frozen. The plan is that they would be woken up 200 years later to breed with the residents of the other two vaults and then take control of what’s left of the U.S.

The truth about Hank 48425w

Of course, Hank came from that vault, so that means he’s a part of Vault-Tec. In flashbacks we see him as an assistant executive going by the name Henry, as he nervously asks Cooper for his autograph. He was woken up and brought to Vault 33 to ensure that it survived at any cost, even if that meant dropping a nuclear bomb on Shady Sands with Lucy’s mother still there.

The wasteland is a harsh place, but you didn't need to make it worse!]]>
<![CDATA[

Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout is officially a hit. Critics and fans love it, and the studio is so impressed a second season has already been confirmed. Much like The Last of Us, a popular television adaptation will bring a new audience to the Fallout games, which debuted on PC back in 1997.

Those early isometric games laid the foundation for open-world roleplaying with a focus on solving problems how you see fit. And, as anyone who’s ever ventured outside of a vault will know, you by no means have to play a goody-two-shoes hero. So, here are the ten most monstrous, sadistic and downright evil things you can do across the Fallout series.

8. Nuke Megaton (Fallout 3) 605714

Let’s get this out of the way early. Megaton is probably the first major town you’ll discover in Fallout 3 and a place you’ll periodically return to during your travels. It’s a neat little town of humans and ghouls coexisting and is built around an unexploded nuclear bomb.

And so you get a choice. Disarm the bomb or detonate it. Wiping the town off the map gives you 1000 caps, a nice room over at Tenpenny Towers, and a sweet mushroom cloud explosion. The real price is your conscience. Did the apocalypse teach you nothing?

7. Burning Harold (Fallout 3) l761

The mutated Harold is one of the few legacy characters in the franchise, appearing in the first three mainline Fallout games. A former vault dweller, he was mutated by the Forced Evolutionary Virus. After a tough life, he’s found peace by the time of Fallout 3 and has mutated into a tree-like form, with the oasis around him one of the few green spaces in the Capital Wasteland.

The player encounters Harold and, recognizing that he’s a tree, wonders if he’s flammable. As it turns out, he very much is! As this kindhearted creature screams and writhes in flames you have a moment to reflect on your actions. At this point, even the most coldhearted player might consider loading an earlier save file.

6. Rapid unscheduled disassembly (Fallout: New Vegas) 452k5l

The Wasteland isn’t a great place to live, what with the deathclaws, raiders, slavers and so on, so we can’t blame the ghouls inhabiting the REPCONN test site for wanting to blast off in a rocket to somewhere happier. Arguably their journey to the stars is bound to end in disaster, but at least they get to live their dream.

But if you’re playing an evil character you can convince their human assistant that it’s not fair they’re leaving him behind and sabotage the launch. You can pour cereal into their engines or screw with the navigation, but either way, you can then grab some popcorn and watch Fallout‘s take on a SpaceX launch as the hopeful ghouls die in a rocketfuel fireball.

5. Annul your marriage (Fallout 2) 6744e

Life after the apocalypse can be lonely and sometimes even a faithful dog just doesn’t cut with when it comes to company. But play your cards right in Fallout 2 and you can tie the knot. Your husband or wife will then become a permanent member of your party. Finally a happily ever after!

Well, not quite. Maybe you get a little sick of them following you about and maybe you’re short of a few caps… One day you the slaver’s guild and put two and two together. Yup, you can sell your dearly beloved into slavery. And, if you want to twist the knife, you can tell your father-in-law what you’ve done and watch him keel over from a heart attack.

4. Arcade games (Fallout: New Vegas) 2v1o43

The Mojave desert isn’t short of grunting illiterate and uneducated freaks, so meeting Arcade is a breath of fresh air. He’s a doctor, scientist and political theorist with strong opinions on the political future of the region. At the core of his personality is his ion for individual liberty and independence, which puts him at odds with the Roman Empire cosplayers of Caesar’s Legion.

You’ll soon realize that Arcade really hates Caesar in particular. But, Caesar is very powerful, needs a doctor and Arcade fits the bill. Needless to say the freedom-loving Arcade’s worst nightmares are realized as you sell him into slavery as Caesar’s personal doctor. Enjoy your worst possible life, Arcade!

3. Shoot the hostage (Fallout 4) 2b5yh

Fallout 4 doesn’t offer too many options to be truly evil, but the otherwise heroic Silver Shroud quest can wrap up quite diabolically. This revolves around geek ghoul Kent Connolly, a huge fan of superhero the Silver Shroud. You end up wearing the costume and fighting evil, only for the questline to end with Kent being held hostage.

The villain says “Step any closer and we got to see what’s inside Kent’s head!”. Huh, well now I’m curious. Blasting Kent is so unexpected even the raiders are shocked and scared. You’ll then massacre them and complete the quest, but… not as a hero.

2. Project Impurity (Fallout 3) k5913

Project Purity aims to provide clean water to the Capital Wasteland and is a big part of Fallout 3‘s main questline. But, in the Broken Steel DLC those dreams of a happy and healthy new society can turn into a nightmare. If you align yourself with the villainous President Eden you can insert a modified forced evolutionary virus into the purification system. This will make water lethal to any mutated creature.

That means it’s goodbye ghouls and goodbye super mutants! Oh, and as radiation levels mean most regular people have some mutations it’s goodbye to almost else everyone too! Or, as the ending puts it “the capital wasteland, despite its progress, became a graveyard”.

1. Hugs for daddy (Fallout 2) h3u3k

In contrast to the last one this isn’t some world-changing decision, but a piece of sheer petty cruelty that few games can match. A mobster hires you to kill a politician and have a lot of leeway in how to get past his security and whack him. But, if you’re feeling outright devilish you can reverse pickpocket a live grenade into his infant son’s inventory then give him a special message to tell his dad.

The kid excitedly runs to his beloved dad to give him a hug and *KABOOM*. Mission accomplished. You monster.

It's a blast from the past, but what does this mean for the lore of the series?]]>
<![CDATA[

With Amazon Prime’s Fallout TV series right around the corner, it’s time to delve back into the post-apocalyptic world of the game to get us in the mood.

The trailer dropped earlier today, and fans have been praising every aspect of it; they’ve stayed true to the games, right down to well-known game locations. The casting is great too — Walton Goggins as a ghoul, and Matt Berry as a Mr. Handy robot are unexpected choices, but they’re literally perfect. The trailer has so many Easter eggs to unpick, but eagle eyed fans have already spotted a reference to the first ever Fallout game with a sign reading “Shady Sands Public Library.”

What is Shady Sands? 6v5y49

For those who played the first Fallout game from 1997, the name will be all too familiar, as it was likely the very first town you came across after leaving the vault. In said town, you can find a number of characters who will give you some early game side quests that will allow you to level up and get some loot. You can also find Ian, who, for many players, was their first follower to them on their quest.

When the Vault Dweller first arrives Aradesh, the town leader, is suspicious of them, but his trust is earned after you save his daughter, Tandi. Tandi is an important figure in Fallout lore, but we’ll get into that in a bit.

Where is Shady Sands? 2k6t1v

Image via Interplay Entertainment

The first Fallout game takes place on the West coast of the U.S. particularly, Southern California. Shady Sands itself is likely somewhere between Los Angeles and San Francisco. So that makes sense that we’d see the location show up in the series, considering Todd Howard confirmed ages ago that the show would take place around Los Angeles. It would also be a nice nod to the original Interplay games to have the protagonist of the show visit Shady Sands first, the same way many players did back in ‘97.

Shady Sands and Fallout lore 55e3e

Image via Bethesda

The end of Fallout 1 explains that Tandi and her father would go on to found the New California Republic, “whose ideals spread across the land.” The NCR are a pretty important faction, especially in Fallout: New Vegas, and arguably they’re on the same level as the Brotherhood of Steel in of control over the wasteland. Anyways, Shady Sands would be the main base of operations for the NCR in Fallout 2 and beyond.

Considering the trailer seems to be set long after the events of the first couple of games, it’s likely we won’t see characters such as Aradesh and Tandi. However, it’s certainly possible we’ll get to see some NCR rangers walking around the town. We now know that the show is set in the same universe as the games, so we’ll hopefully see some references to Tandi, Aradesh, and the NCR, at the very least.

<![CDATA[

The latest Starfield Q and A just wrapped up and boy, does it seem like Bethesda has learned from its past mistakes. The highly anticipated game is just weeks aways and, as gamers try to fight off their inevitable hype, Bethesda keeps upping the ante with tantalizing new details for its latest RPG. During the Q and A the devs answered some of Discord’s burning questions, and while not every single Q was gold, the answers certainly were. These are the most important takeaways from the session.

Houses are available in every major settlement area 374h3s

While most domiciles can be purchased, there are going to be specific houses that can only be unlocked by completing specific quests. We can only imagine that some of Fallout 4’s decoration abilities will be present, but there’s no confirmation just yet.

Parents will be generated based on character looks 2g6f6q

Screengrab via YouTube/Bethesda Game Studios

Much like Bethesda’s Fallout entries, the player’s family will be based off of their character’s design. Will, the lead quest designer for the game, boasted that the team had completely overhauled the face tech, and were “Excited to make a function that could try to match your custom face and then create your two parents.” They elaborated very little on the Kid Stuff perk, but did say that fans were sure to love their voice cast picks for mom and dad.

The universe is made to be lived in 2t4v2

Screengrab via YouTube/Bethesda Game Studios

The devs were very candid about Starfield being a universe that players can immerse themselves in. The Traits and background system will allow players to build their character like never before. Will says, “Try anything! We’re a simulation as well as a roleplaying game, so we try to the player doing what they want as much as we can.”

To that end, a jail system similar to that in Skyrim will be in place for Starfield. Players will be traversing civilized areas, so they better act like it. Else they risk a one-way ticket to jail – or are brave enough to resist arrest.

They allow for backstabbery, but pacifism is still hard 2q5c35

Screengrab via YouTube/Bethesda Game Studios

Unlike Fallout 4, Starfield’s branching storyline allows players to side with multiple factions. Each faction mission can be completed independently from the others, and some missions will allow players to turn on their allies.

Just like Fallout 4, it seems like a truly non-lethal playthrough is going to be hard to attempt, though Bethesda seems to have tried. While the devs were unwilling to claim a nonlethal playthrough was viable, they did say that non-lethal weapons have been added, as well as a new Speech Challenge option that will allow players to contest bad outcomes. These Speech challenges have been added to “most quests where important characters confront you.” So players always have one last chance before resorting to violence.

Companions are a focus 4y463p

Screengrab via YouTube/Bethesda Game Studios

Bethesda took a good hard look at their last few games and came to the conclusion that players really like companions. To that end, the company has put a focus on deg believable companions that matter in the grand scheme of the main story line. With more than 20 companions to choose from it will be a hard choice to make, but the devs confirmed that all companions aren’t built the same. The four followers found on Constellation have the most impacting storylines, the most interactions with the player, and have more backstory than the other offerings. And you’ll only have to pay them once.

You can fully enact your Han Solo daydreams 2j5l6g

Screengrab via YouTube/Bethesda Game Studios

Starfield has already been candid about the ability to smuggle contraband across the universe, but Bethesda elaborated on the systems it’s put in place. Illegal substances are universal and will get your character in trouble no matter where you are. Ships can be upgraded to better hide the illicit cargo, and there are laws in the galaxy making sure that prices are fixed, so you wont have to travel around to multiple planets to get the best price.

With Starfield primed to hit Xbox Game day one, there’s no reason not jump on board the hype train.

And no, it's not due to having nine lives.]]>
<![CDATA[

One of the greatest inconsistencies in the Fallout canon is how exactly cats still exist in the post-apocalypse, with lorebeards at odds with each other constantly.

Fallout 2 set up no cats existed after the bombs fell in 2077, but two mainline instalments later in 2015’s Fallout 4, cats are very much living their best life in the apocalypse. Even as recently as 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas it’d been theorized by Mr. House all felines had gone extinct. This leaves a big question in the view of fans: what is actually going on?

Perhaps there’s a very simple explanation which ties in well with human nature and the dreary landscape of the apocalypse. Their survival has hinged on the first Vault dwellers wanting to take their cats with them, and reflects the differing levels of radiation across the American Wastelands.

A cat would very likely not survive in the dry heat of the Mojave Wastelands, explaining why Mr. House believes them to be completely extinct during New Vegas. Contrast it with the far greener and more hospitable Commonwealth of Boston, cats would easily get around such a world.

Fallout 4 saw cats in several places, and even allowed players to adopt cats to roam around their rustic settlements thanks to a DLC pack. An entire quest even begins in the game with the player being tasked with finding a runaway cat named Toro. In addition, a cat can be found in probably the only school in all of the Wasteland located in Diamond City.

How cats haven’t gone the way of feral ghouls is unclear, but some would argue hairless cats are the ghouls of the real world.

A live-action Fallout series is currently in the works from Amazon, with it expected to be set in the west coast.

Welcome to the apocalypse. Toilet papers are on Aisle C.]]>

The post-apocalyptic and irradiated world of Fallout features a number of iconic locations that draw a powerful contrast between what was and what could’ve been in the ruins of a once-great civilization. One of these, a proud staple of a free-market capitalistic society, is a retail hypermarket called the Super Duper Mart, and according to the latest photos from the set of Prime Video’s forthcoming adaptation, the huge store is being turned into a real set for live-action.

These new images come courtesy of Collider, revealing the exterior of the Super Duper Mart being constructed with all the meticulous care that the nuclear apocalypse requires to look authentic. While there’ve been certain changes to the building’s facade, it looks like the logo is exactly like the game’s.

The Super Duper Mart was first introduced in Fallout 3, but Bethesda Softworks continued to resurrect it for all subsequent installments in the series, including Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas also features the Super Duper brand to some extent, though instead of a building, you get to see the ments for its retail chain, as redundant as they may seem in a world overrun by death at every corner.

Fallout is being produced by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, whose previous works include Captain Marvel and Silicon Valley, respectively. Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan is also attached to the project, not only serving as an executive producer but also helming the pilot.

According to Collider, Fallout will start shooting again in late June.

<![CDATA[

One of Resident Evil Village‘s mega popular antagonists has already started making appearances in other media. Lady Dimitrescu, the abnormally tall castellan with sinister intentions for Ethan Winters and his family, has become something of an internet celebrity since her reveal last year due in no small part to her striking image and fashion sense. As we all know, of course, mimicry is the greatest form of flattery, and plenty of incredible cosplay attempts have sprung up over the last few months, as too, has endless fan art and now, perhaps inevitably, modders are ing the fun. ed last week to Nexus Mods, vtaw has replicated Dimitrescu’s likeness in Bethesda’s open world RPG Fallout 4, allowing those who and install it the ability to explore post-apocalyptic Boston looking far too clean to be found in a wasteland. Immersion-breaking wardrobe additions aside, vtaw’s efforts are certainly something to behold and you can check out the faithful replication – increased bust size included – for yourself below.

Naturally, we expect this to be the first of many fan-made creations to find their way online over the next few months, and if 2019’s RE2 remake is any indication, we’ll likely be seeing Dimitrescu herself receive numerous costume changes once Village arrives. Some of these will undoubtedly stray into NSFW territory and it’ll be interesting to see if Capcom has taken any precautions to prevent or hinder such changes following the release of infamous ‘nude mods’ for the latter’s Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Resident Evil Village launches May 7th on current and last-gen consoles as well as PC. Stay tuned for all the latest details to come out of Capcom’s second gameplay showcase later this week!]]>

For some inexplicable reason, Konami seems hellbent on never delivering a proper Silent Hill sequel. The studio, which at one point in the not too distant past, was renowned for publishing gaming excellence in the form of Metal Gear Solid and the aforementioned survival horror series, has undergone what can only be described as a major shift in priorities as of late. Not since Metal Gear Survive (itself earning somewhat of a lukewarm reception), has the company released a triple-A title, with its latest claim to fame, Contra: Rogue Corps, earning universal criticism for a clear lack of funding and effort. As for Silent Hill, last we heard, Konami had opted to transform the franchise into this abomination, leaving hopes of a true continuation all but shattered. And so, with such a bleak outlook for the future, fans have had no choice but to take it upon themselves to keep the series’ soul alive. Silent Hill Enter Whispering Hills. The mod, created by Mangaclub, transforms Bethesda’s Fallout 4 into a living nightmare filled with monsters that Silent Hill fans will immediately recognize. Once ed and installed (link below), players will be greeted by the sight of a thick fog sweeping over post-apocalyptic Boston, with a host of new ambient background sounds included to be more thematically fitting. Ten different weather variations are included as well, says Mangaclub, some of which, they say, signifies an unfortunate trip to the Otherworld. Spoilers: that’s not somewhere you want to go. Yet more evidence that a massive appetite for a new Silent Hill experience still exists, then, and it remains to be seen if Konami will ever again do anything meaningful with the license. Considering the company recently sold off the IP’s online domain name for a meagre $10,000, though, the outlook doesn’t look good. As such, Hideo Kojima’s P.T. may well be last ever official Silent Hill we get. What a travesty.

Publishers and license holders must absolutely love throwing money down the drain because if they didn’t, this feature wouldn’t have a leg to stand on. Unequivocal cancellations rank right up there with microtransactions on the unspoken list of most reviled practices in all of gamedom, and yet, for an outsider looking in, it appears that the men in suits never learn from the lessons that previous instances of premature game death should have taught them. For the sake of clarity, there’s a clear-cut difference between those titles that are canceled or pulled from sale for very good reason – the PC versions of Batman: Arkham Knight and Injustice 2 immediately come to mind – and those that, for all intents and purposes, look like perfectly serviceable streams of code worthy of being printed on a disc, ready to be shipped across the planet. On the extreme end of the spectrum, however, there are those fantastical worlds that, despite brimming with potential, still kick the bucket through no fault of their own. Whether it be due to inadequate funding, poor foresight or as an unfortunate victim of collateral damage, there’s no end to the myriad of dangerous afflictions that certain promising creations aren’t immunized against and perhaps its time that steps be taken to avoid such travesties in the future. There’s nothing to be gained from shipping a broken mess of a game, but none of these scrapped ideas could ever be described as such…

Bethesda's Pete Hines has confirmed that the VR build of Fallout 4 will be playable at E3 2017, and it'll seemingly "blow your mind." ]]>
<![CDATA[

You wait generations for a Bethesda press conference at the industry’s famous E3 expo and suddenly, three come along in as many years. On Sunday, June 11th, the decorated publisher will take the stage at the Los Angeles Convention Center to showcase its pixelated wares for 2017 and beyond, but as E3 2017 marks the first year in which the annual trade show is open to the public, Bethesda is bringing an exciting surprise to the show floor: a VR build of Fallout 4. First announced at E3 2016, a VR version of the award-winning RPG is expected to launch for HTC Vive sometime in 2017 – other platforms such as PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift are yet to be confirmed – and it’ll seemingly blow our minds. That’s according to Bethesda boss Pete Hines, who turned in a status report regarding Fallout 4‘s VR while chatting to Hip Hop Gamer (via Game Rant). Although he hasn’t actually played the build himself due to issues with motion sickness, Hines essentially relayed comments made by Fallout 4 Game Director, Todd Howard. Much to the surprise of no one, Howard gushes with praise when quizzed about the VR , stating that:

Fallout 4 VR is the most incredible thing you’ve ever seen in your life. You can’t even imagine what it’s like, playing in VR and how realistic it looks and everywhere you turn your head. It is going to blow your mind. It is the craziest thing you’ve ever seen.

There’s currently no mention of a release date for Fallout 4‘s VR build – ditto for DOOM, which also has virtual reality in the pipeline – though we expect Bethesda to make an official announcement at E3 in June, where it’s assumed that the publisher will also peel back the curtain on The Evil Within 2, along with some form of continuation to the rejuvenated Wolfenstein series.
