Torn between his love for his family and his attraction to immortality, Cameron sets off on a personal and existential quest. The film delves into the morally murky waters of cloning technology, raising severe concerns about humanity’s nature, uniqueness, and the repercussions of playing God with life and death. Not only does Swan Song feature stellar acting from its lead, but it also boasts stunning photography that vividly and atmospherically depicts the future world.

8. Sharper (2023) – Julianne Moore l245t

7. Greyhound (2020) – Tom Hanks 552f3n

The Tom Hanks film Greyhound is a riveting war tale directed by Aaron Schneider and based on C.S. Forester’s novel The Good Shepherd from 1955. The film begins in 1942, when Hanks’ character, Commander Ernest Krause, is tasked with leading an Allied convoy through the dangerous North Atlantic. In order to deliver troops and supplies to Europe, the convoy must avoid being captured by German U-boats operating in groups known as “wolf packs.”

As commander of the escort destroyer USS Keeling, codenamed “Greyhound,” Krause must deal with the enormous pressure of fending off enemy attacks on the convoy and its crew. The cat-and-mouse game between Allied forces and German submarines is expertly shown, making for some tense and exciting viewing. Hanks gives a compelling portrayal bringing home the mental and emotional costs of command in times of conflict.

6. Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (2023) – Michael J. Fox 1a5wl

Director Davis Guggenheim’s biopic Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie provides an emotional and inspiring look inside the life of actor-turned-activist Michael J. Fox as he deals with Parkinson’s disease. The film takes audiences on a trip through Fox’s incredible career, from his first significant role in Family Ties to his unforgettable turn as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. It showcases his undeniable talent, and his impact on the entertainment industry.

The film, however, digs deeper than Fox’s professional triumphs and explores his struggles on a personal level. It delves into his early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and his courageous efforts to deal with its mental and physical effects. The film is an inspiring of his fortitude, resolve, and refusal to give up in the face of hardship. The documentary succeeds in part because of its ability to highlight Fox’s humor, which has served as an inspiration to many.

5. Emancipation (2022) – Will Smith 3g5466

Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua’s Emancipation is a stirring film set in 1860s Louisiana and depicts the narrative of Peter (Smith), a fugitive enslaved man who must travel hazardous swamps while being followed by slave catchers after the Emancipation Proclamation. Peter is stolen from his family and sold as slave labor to the Confederate Army. He refuses to accept his fate and becomes desperate to free his family.

After fleeing his estate, he learns that Lincoln’s army is in Baton Rouge and prepares to meet them there to ask for their help. Dodienne, Peter’s wife, is sold and must prepare their children for life apart while Peter fights for his life and tries to find them. Slavery’s agonizing effects on families are depicted in the film, along with the strength of those who battled for liberation. Peter’s resolve and courage are inspiring throughout the film.

4. The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) – Denzel Washington and s McDormand 2u12z

The Tragedy of Macbeth is a mesmerizing and visually stunning film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s iconic play. With an outstanding cast and innovative style, director Joel Coen brings the ageless story of ambition, power, and betrayal to the big screen in this dark, moody drama. The story of Lord Macbeth (Denzel Washington) and his ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth (s McDormand), unfolds in the medieval Scottish countryside. Macbeth’s ambition for the throne is stoked when he meets three witches who foretell his ascent to power.

Macbeth is driven to fulfill the witches’ prophecy by his wife’s manipulative and subtle encouragement, which leads him down a path of betrayal and murder. Washington portrays Macbeth with a disturbing and gripping intensity. He deftly navigates Macbeth’s layered personality, illuminating the struggle between the Scottish king’s moral com and his insatiable drive for power. McDormand’s performance as Lady Macbeth is strong and subtle, giving the character fresh perspectives. The bleak, foggy terrain and the film’s monochrome color palette create an eerie atmosphere.

The film Raymond & Ray is profoundly moving and introspective, exploring the nuances of grief and family interactions. The protagonists, half-brothers Raymond and Ray, are reunited following their father’s death. Ray’s (Ethan Hawke) brother Raymond (Ewan McGregor) shows up at his house to break the news that their father has died and that his dying desire was for them to dig his grave.

The brothers are forced to deal with their own emotional baggage and the lingering troubles in their relationship as they take on this odd mission. Both McGregor and Hawke give spellbinding, deeply felt performances. The former gives Raymond a sense of openness and introspection, depicting a guy struggling with his problems and looking for comfort in the face of loss. In contrast, the latter gives a sympathetic portrayal of Ray, a man grappling with his own resentment and trying to find closure in the wake of his father’s death.

2. Causeway (2022) – Jennifer Lawrence 6s4ex

Lila Neugebauer’s film Causeway examines the mental and emotional challenges of picking up the pieces of one’s life after suffering a traumatic event. Lynsey (Jennifer Lawrence), the story’s protagonist, is a young woman who returns to the United States from Afghanistan after experiencing a life-altering event. She grapples with a severe brain injury that leaves her needing constant care and relearning basic tasks. The film showcases Lawrence’s exceptional acting skills as she portrays Lynsey’s frustration, impatience, and defiance through subtle body language.

Her character’s seeming power wanes as she develops a friendship with Brian Tyree Henry’s James, who guides her through the trials of reintegrating into society and regaining trust. Their relationship adds a sense of joy and hope to the story, delivering a ray of light in the middle of gloom. The film garnered generally excellent reviews from critics, who commended Lawrence and Henry’s performances. Among other honors, Henry was nominated for Best ing Actor at the 95th Academy Awards.

1. Finch (2021) – Tom Hanks 6f5t6f

Directed by Miguel Sapochnik, Finch is a moving and thought-provoking post-apocalyptic science fiction drama. Starring Tom Hanks, the film boasts another outstanding performance from the actor that will have you wiping tears from your eyes. Hanks stars as the title character, a robotics engineer who must navigate a devastated world. After a devastating solar explosion that Earth can no longer life, Finch is one of the only people still alive. With his trusty and adorable dog Goodyear by his side, Finch sets off on a risky cross-country voyage in a vehicle he made himself and powered by solar energy.

Despite the bleak surroundings, Finch’s brilliance shines through when he builds an intelligent robot friend he calls Jeff. Voiced by Caleb Landry Jones, Jeff is a sweet and naive addition to their improbable family, injecting fun and lightheartedness into an otherwise dreary setting. Finch faces many perils as he and his companions travel across the destroyed environment, such as a lack of supplies and potentially hostile survivors. The film’s depiction of Finch, Jeff, and Goodyear’s relationship is touching and moving, showcasing the value of friendship and the strength of the human spirit in the face of insurmountable tragedy.

America's Dad is proving to be something of a hypocrite.]]>
<![CDATA[

There are plenty of high-profile filmmakers out there who’ve blasted the unstoppable rise of streaming, with Quentin Tarantino most recently singling out Ryan Reynolds’ Netflix vehicles for criticism. However, that hasn’t stopped many of the industry’s biggest names from either making or starring in them, which has left Tom Hanks sounding a tad hypocritical.

A staunch er of the theatrical experience and its unique beauty, the two-time Academy Award winner recently opined to The New Yorker on why he doesn’t care for watching movies on-demand, when reflecting on the current state of cinema as a whole.

“Be honest: How many times have you – and maybe you alone, or you and your family – said, “Hey, let’s watch something tonight”? Great, you pick up the remote and it takes you forever to agree on what you’re going to watch on Apple or Netflix or Hulu or Amazon Prime. “Oh, no, not that. No, not that. No, not that.”

So 45 minutes later you have decided, by way of bitter compromise, what you are going to watch – which is not what you want to watch, but you’re going to have to go along with it because three of the rotten of your family have voted in favor of this thing and you’re on the losing side. You turn down the lights. You enter your fucking . And the code comes along and it asks for your billing address. And someone has to go through their phone, come up with a billing address. Because why did they reboot this? Who rebooted it?

So there’s another 15 minutes that are lost to the process. Now you’re finally ready to start the movie that you have all “agreed” to watch. And you think, At last, let’s watch the movie. 17 minutes into it, you think, I have no investment in this movie whatsoever. I don’t like this movie. I’m going to leave the room and not bother watching the rest of this movie. Right? How many times">Disney Plus’ horrendous $150 million Pinocchio.

As much as everyone loves Tom Hanks, it’s maybe not very fair of him to blast streaming-only titles when he seems to keep on agreeing to star in them.

A virtually-inarguable fact of life is that everyone loves Tom Hanks, but the iconic actor’s forced foray into streaming during the height of the pandemic didn’t exactly go to plan, with Finch one of three features starring the two-time Academy Award winner to get lost in the shuffle.

World War II epic Greyhound hit Hanks the hardest because he also wrote and produced it, while the decision to send Paul Greengrass’ elegiac Western News of the World to Netflix led to the potential awards season heavy hitter being forgotten about almost instantly among the deluge of more palatable festive favorites. Things arguably went even worse for Finch, seeing as it was initially pegged for a wide theatrical rollout.

Shooting wrapped in in May 2019, with Universal planning to give audiences the gift of Hanks, post-apocalyptic sci-fi, adorable canine companion, and scene-stealing robot in October 2020. Of course, COVID had other ideas, with the domino effect ultimately ending with the studio selling the project off to Apple, who quietly unveiled it in November of last year.

One of the last survivors of the human race, Hanks opts to built a companion to keep his dog company in the event of his death, before the unlikely trio head out across America on a road trip to rediscover the meaning of life. It’s heartwarming and hugely entertaining stuff, but it didn’t stand a chance being debuted exclusively on a streamer that was only in its infancy at the time.

However, Finch could prove to be one of Apple’s most reliable recurring hits, seeing as it circled back around to become the fifth top-viewed title on the platform once more, per FlixPatrol. Hanks, dogs, and robots; a winning combination if ever there was one.

People love the science fiction genre, they love cute animal sidekicks even more, and they sure as hell love America’s Dad Tom Hanks, so it’s no surprise to discover that Finch has been trending on social media after premiering on AppleTV+ yesterday.

The heartwarming, often hilarious and regularly melancholic road trip buddy adventure has been drawing strong reviews from critics, with Hanks unsurprisingly being singled out for yet another fantastic performance. The two-time Academy Award winner plays the title character, who builds a robot companion to keep his dog company in the event of his death, before the unlikely trio head out on a dangerous cross-country journey.

As you can see from the reactions below, the internet can’t get enough of Finch, with Hanks becoming the go-to guy for acclaimed dramas that debut exclusively on streaming, despite the fact that’s the complete opposite of his intentions.

Apple’s platform could find itself enjoying a bump in subscriber numbers given the goodwill Hanks has cultivated among the public during his reign as one of the industry’s most beloved stars. His name alone is often enough to convince people that his latest project it worth checking out, and Finch most definitely is.

<![CDATA[

Tom Hanks has always been vocally against the idea of high-profile movies skipping theaters entirely in favor of debuting on streaming, but in a twist of cruel irony, the circumstances caused by the pandemic have seen his last four features do exactly that.

His World War II ion project Greyhound, which he also wrote and produced, debuted on AppleTV+ last summer after it was sold off by Sony. He also made a surprise cameo appearance in Prime Video’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, while Paul Greengrass Western News of the World was distributed internationally by Netflix, and earlier this year he wrapped shooting on Robert Zemeckis’ Disney Plus exclusive Pinocchio. Today brings the release of post-apocalyptic sci-fi Finch, another Apple original, which was originally intended to be released theatrically by Universal.

The project marks director Miguel Sapochnik’s second feature, and first in eleven years since futuristic action flop Repo Men, but the filmmaker has made his mark on television in the interim by helming episodes of many wildly popular shows, including some of the very best Game of Thrones has to offer. Finch doesn’t boast much in the way of visual style, flair or distinctive flourishes, but that doesn’t really matter when it’s a character-driven piece above all else.

The setup is remarkably simple given what we’ve come to expect from sci-fi stories revolving around the end of the world; Hanks plays Finch Weinberg, one of the last surviving of the human race following a cataclysmic event that wreaked untold destruction. Wary that his time is running out, the inventor doesn’t want to leave his beloved dog alone in the event of his death, so he builds a sentient robot to keep his canine best friend company.

After some initial teething problems, which largely unfold through a series of humorous montages as his metallic protege gets to grips with walking and talking, the android names himself Jeff and looks to become part of the makeshift family unit as they head on a cross-country road trip, with the Golden Gate Bridge as their ultimate destination.

Movies that focus almost entirely on just a handful of characters are almost obligated to feature strong performances to keep the attention of the viewer, and that’s very much the case with Finch given that the only other three figures seen onscreen in the entire 115-minute running time other than Finch himself are two robots and a dog. Luckily, Hanks just happens to be one of the greatest actors of all-time, and it’s yet another phenomenal performance in a back catalogue brimming with them.

As the audience surrogate, protagonist, narrator and lead character all at once, it’s not an easy part to play, but Hanks is reliably sensational. Every gesture or movement, whether it be a raised eyebrow or sigh of exasperation, tells you much more about Finch’s mindset than any number of monologues ever could, and the leading man effortlessly carries the weight of the entire narrative on his shoulders.

That’s not to say everything else is window dressing, with Caleb Landry Jones’ vocal turn as Jeff a masterclass in how to bring depth, layers and emotional complexity to a character that doesn’t even have a face. There’s innocence, heart, humor, warmth and a constantly evolving sense of understanding that sees the dynamic between Jeff and Finch shift from master and his creation to almost father and son, even with some awkward moments in the second act where the robot takes some of his paternal supervisor’s advice a little too literally, which can almost be viewed as Jeff’s awkward teenage years.

finch

Other than an opening scene that sets the stage to find Finch doing his best to escape a rampaging storm, a tense and jumpy supply run into an abandoned hospital and a nerve-shredding sequence that finds our heroes being followed by faceless marauders in another vehicle, there isn’t any action or anything you’d even call a set piece in Finch, despite the broad genre trappings of the premise.

Instead, the script from Craig Luck and Ivor Powell throws all sorts of ingredients into the mix, with the end result being a charming, elegiac mix of father-and-son tale, man and his dog adventure and buddy road trip comedy seamlessly dovetailing together to create an end product that isn’t particularly exciting or original in the standard sense, but never anything less than eminently watchable.

Despite the prime November release date and financial backing of the monolithic Apple, it’s hard to envision Finch as either a mass-market crowd-pleaser or awards season contender, giving it an unusual place in the late-year catalog. Hanks might (and probably should) find some recognition in the various Lead Actor categories, but as a whole it still feels as though it’s missing something, that one special ingredient that would take it above being hugely enjoyable and into unmissable territory.

As it stands, though, Finch is a very good film, one that’s ideal to fire up when you’ve got a couple of hours to spare and fancy losing yourself in a plot that’s hardly detailed or complex, but always charming and guaranteed to put a smile on your face or bring a tear to your eye. Not everything has to have the potential to earn billions of dollars at the box office or go home with an armful of trophies come the end of awards season, and if you’re looking for something that fits perfectly in the middle of that spectrum, then you won’t find much better this year than Finch.

<![CDATA[

Tomorrow sees high concept sci-fi Finch arrive on AppleTV+, where it’s guaranteed to find an audience for the sole reason that it’s got Tom Hanks playing the lead role, although it helps that the early reviews have generally been strong across the board.

The two-time Academy Award winner and America’s Dad stars as the title character, an inventor and one of the last humans left alive on Earth following a cataclysmic event that brought about the apocalypse. Dwelling in an underground bunker clinging on to survival, Finch builds an android to keep his dog company in the event of his death, before the unlikely trio set out on a perilous journey across the country.

Discussing the movie at a recent press junket via ComicBook, Hanks explains what drew him to the project, and why Finch promises to put a brand new spin on the end of the world.

“All these movies haunt you and demand things of you that you’re not sure that you’re going to be able to summon up. The fact is that the movie itself, the screenplay as written, lacked a cynicism that I think a lot of other movies like this would have. Here’s what it does not have: murderous zombies, blood-thirsty bikers from hell, renegade warriors that are going to rape all the women and eat all the children.

There’s a lot of stuff that … The tropes, if I dare say so, or the commonalities that an awful lot of these movies have, is different. Finch never goes into a subterranean world and battles the Eloi. The crux of this movie, and as I’ve explained it to people, and everybody goes, ‘What is the science fiction movie you’re doing? What is it about? The end of the world? What, you’re the last guy in the planet? Who wants to see that"> import PhotoSwipeLightbox from 'https://unpkg.com/photoswipe/dist/photoswipe-lightbox.esm.js'; const lightbox = new PhotoSwipeLightbox({ // may select multiple "galleries" gallery: '#wgtc_gallery-1050705', // Elements within gallery (slides) children: 'a', // setup PhotoSwipe Core dynamic import pswpModule: () => import('https://unpkg.com/photoswipe') }); lightbox.init();

Sci-fi isn’t a genre that Hanks has dabbled in all that often, and he’s unsurprisingly said to have delivered yet another knockout performance in a career that’s absolutely full of them. Finch stands a good chance of causing a serious uptick in AppleTV+ subscribers over the coming days, given the screen legend’s sizeable fanbase and global popularity.

America’s Dad looks to have found a new surrogate family in AppleTV+’s drama Finch, which is poised to be a serious awards season contender if the first trailer is any indication.

The high concept drama was sold off by Universal last year, and Apple look to have found a real winner, as if we expected anything else from the mighty Tom Hanks. The actor was vocally against the idea of his World War II ion project Greyhound skipping theaters eighteen months ago, but he’s clearly softened his stance since then.

The two-time Academy Award winner plays the title character, an inventor and one of the last surviving humans following a cataclysmic event. Living in an underground bunker with his trusted canine companion, Finch builds an android to keep his dog company in the event of his death.

The unlikely trio then set out on a perilous and potentially deadly trip across the American West, seeking what it means to be alive. In all honesty; Finch looks fantastic. It’s got Hanks, a dog and a comic relief robot in a post-apocalyptic Western that boasts equal parts heart, humanity and humor, what else could you possibly ask for?

Finch premieres on November 5th, where it’ll look to make a splash with critics to establish itself as one of the year’s marquee prestige dramas, but we can almost certainly expect the leading man to be right in the thick of the Best Actor conversation regardless of what the reviews say.

Viewers, who have seen Tom Hanks in various roles such as the Toy Story franchise, Forrest Gump, and critically acclaimed Captain Phillips, will get an in-depth look at Hanks’s versatile acting abilities in November as he stars in Apple TV+’s sci-fi, drama, Finch.

The film follows the unlikely bond of a robotics engineer named Finch, played by Hanks, his canine, and a robot while embarking on a meaningful quest of ensuring the dog’s safety after he’s gone. The movie also stars Caleb Landry Jones from X-Men: First Class.

Finch‘s first poster was unveiled via Twitter on September 16th by Amblin, the production company founded by Steve Spielberg, as well as film producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. The post read, “Tom Hanks is Finch, the head of an unlikely family on a journey to rediscover the joy and wonder of what it means to be alive. Streaming November 5, only on @AppleTVPlus.”

This film will mark Hanks’s second project with Apple Original Films. The company initially acquired the rights to Hanks’ World War II thriller Greyhound. The father of four starred as a Navy commander trying to protect the ship convoy from submarines while on a first-time war assignment in 1942’s Battle of Atlantic. The movie ultimately debuted on July 2020 and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Sound.

Finch will make its way to the small screen on November 5th.

Not that anyone would dare speak ill of Tom Hanks, but the actor’s anti-streaming stance looks to be getting weaker with each new project the two-time Academy Award winning legend signs on to.

Hanks itted his disappointment that World War II dramatic thriller Greyhound, a ion project that he also wrote, was bying theaters entirely and heading straight to AppleTV+ last year. Then, his elegiac Western News of the World premiered internationally and exclusively on Netflix, while he’s currently shooting Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio where he plays Gepetto, which is set to debut on Disney Plus.

In fact, his very next film is another streaming title, with Apple TV+ sci-fi Finch now locked in for a November 5th release. The high concept offering was originally developed and produced by Universal, but the financial implications of the pandemic saw them sell it off to Apple back in May. The first image from the movie has also been revealed, which you can check out below.

Hanks plays the title character, an inventor and one of humanity’s last survivors in the wake of a cataclysmic event. He lives in an underground bunker and builds an android to keep his dog company in the event of his death. However, the unlikely trio end up setting out on a perilous journey across the American West in discovery of what it means to be alive.

Caleb Landry-Jones voices the android, but Finch looks to be yet another showcase performance for Hanks, and that November bow puts it right in the thick of the awards season conversation. A post-apocalyptic sci-fi Western starring one of the all-time great actors, a dog and a robot sounds phenomenal, and now we know when we’ll get the chance to see it.

When the Coronavirus pandemic first spread across the world, AppleTV+ stepped in to acquire the distribution rights to Tom Hanks‘ World War II drama Greyhound, and the actor itted that he wasn’t too happy with the idea of his movies bying theaters entirely and getting sent straight to streaming. So, it’s with a hint of irony that the same platform has now picked up Finch, formerly known as Bios, to make it the third Hanks effort heading directly to streaming in the last year after Greyhound and Paul Greengrass’ Western News of the World, which was rolled out internationally and exclusively on Netflix. The high concept sci-fi was developed and produced by Universal, but they’ve now decided to sell it off after a bidding war that was described as highly competitive. AppleTV+ are planning on releasing Finch later this year, and it could be set up as a potential awards season contender. It’s the second feature-length effort by director Miguel Sapochnik, who’s no stranger to science fiction or fantasy having helmed episodes of Fringe, Falling Skies, Under the Dome, Revolution and Altered Carbon, as well as winning an Emmy for Game of Thrones‘ “Battle of the Bastards.” Tom Hanks Hanks plays the title role, an inventor and one of the last few surviving humans left on the planet that lives in an underground bunker, who builds an android to ensure that his dog is looked after when he’s gone. The trio of man, canine and robot then head on a perilous journey across the post-apocalyptic American West as Finch seeks to teach his new creation what it means to be alive. A sci-fi Western that sees Tom Hanks and a dog going on a road trip with an android sounds fascinating, and it should at the very least provide another powerhouse central performance from the screen legend when it lands before 2021 is out.
