They’re calling it the biggest generational clash in modern musical history. At Coachella over the weekend, hackles were raised at seminal pop-punk band Green Day taking the Saturday headline spot, with Charli XCX relegated to a 7 pm ing slot.

Charli then threw gasoline on the fire by appearing at a Coachella afterparty with a sash reading “Miss Should Be Headliner”, but does she have a point? Let’s crunch the numbers and examine their cultural impact, fanbase size, and current relevance.

Green Day, formed in 1987, is a punk rock institution. With over 75 million records sold worldwide, albums like 1994’s Dookie 2004’s and 2004’s American Idiot are generational touchstones. Their catacludes anthems like ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, ‘Basket Case’, and ‘Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)’ which remain staples on radio and streaming platforms.

At Coachella on Saturday, their performance drew a massive crowd, with reports noting it dwarfed Charli XCX’s, despite her prime slot. Green Day also sold out stadiums during their 2024 Saviors tour, repeatedly underscoring their immense draw and continued popularity with everyone from young boomers to older Gen Z. Many will have grown up alongside the band and that level of emotional attachment can’t be understated.

But nobody can deny that Charli XCX is a modern-day juggernaut. Her 2024 album Brat ignited a cultural phenomenon, with its lime-green aesthetic and party-girl ethos dominating social media, though she began her musical career in the early 2010s.

Tracks like ‘360’ and ‘Guess’ (featuring Billie Eilish) have racked up hundreds of millions of streams, and her Coachella set, packed with guests like Lorde and Troye Sivan, was custom-designed to generate viral moments. Charli’s influence is undeniable: she’s a trendsetter for Gen Z and has roughly 30 million monthly Spotify listeners, (though that’s still less than Green Day’s 32 million per month). Yet, her sales (estimated at 1-2 million records) and chart history pale against Green Day’s four-decade career. Her fanbase, while extremely loud and incredibly fervent, is narrower, mostly thriving in online and amongst younger demographics.

Popularity isn’t just numbers—it’s context. Green Day’s Coachella crowd reflected their universal appeal, bridging ages and genres. Charli’s set, though awesome, heavily leaned on Brat’s zeitgeist, which may fade faster than Green Day’s catalog. While Charli is the moment, Green Day’s legacy means they’re more popular. And anyway, when it comes to Coachella 2025, Gaga left them both in the dust.

Why did Las Vegas radio stations ban Green Day? https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/music/why-did-las-vegas-radio-stations-ban-green-day/ https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/music/why-did-las-vegas-radio-stations-ban-green-day/#respond Tue, 01 Oct 2024 18:12:40 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/?p=1761678 The feud started over the Oakland A's.]]>

MLB’s Oakland A’s are moving to Las Vegas in the 2028 season, and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and some Vegas radio stations are feuding over what Armstrong said about the change. It all started at a Green Day show in the Bay Area, and the war of words between Armstrong, the baseball team, and the stations has continued on social media.

The Oakland A’s recently played their final game in Oakland, and around that same time, Green Day played a show in San Francisco. Armstrong, an Oakland native who says he’s a lifelong A’s fan, told the crowd, “We don’t take no s**t from people like John f**king Fisher who sold out the Oakland A’s to Las f**king Vegas,” with an appropriate punk rock disdain for authority. “I hate Las Vegas. It’s the worst s**thole in America,” Armstrong added. Fisher, the current A’s owner, moved the team from the Bay Area.

Armstrong’s not the only Oakland native upset about the decision, either. Oakland fans chanted, “F**k John Fisher” at the team’s last game at Oakland Coliseum. Armstrong even lashed out at an Oakland logo at a tour stop in Canada, graffitiing in green paint the letter B over the team’s existing A and crossing out the word “Athletics.”

And while whistling “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” Armstrong shared the following video. In it, he panned the camera across a wall of MLB logos, stopping to reveal a piece of paper with a green-graffitied B slapped over the Oakland A’s logo.

Armstrong also posted a sweet statement about what the team meant to him growing up in the Oakland area, captioned in part, ” … [T]he athletics leaving Oakland is devastating. I feel for all the fans and the people that will lose their jobs because of greed.. 3 sports teams have left Oakland in the past 5 years Leaving a cultural hole in the east bay hearts and sport.” The NBA’s Golden State Warriors and the NFL’s Oakland Raiders have also recently left the city.

The Vegas radio station fallout

via KOMP/Instagram

While East Bay residents might agree with Billie Joe Armstrong’s outrage over the A’s move, two Vegas radio stations didn’t like what he had to say about Sin City. Vegas station KOMP announced on Instagram they pulled Green Day from their rotation, “It’s not us, Billie … it’s you.”

Meanwhile, Vegas station X 107.5 said they would do the same on their website. “Well, Sin City heard him loud and clear—and X107.5 is not having it. In response to Armstrong’s inflammatory comments, the station is banning all Green Day music, effective immediately,” the station said.

So far, Armstrong has not publically commented on the ban. And the A’s have not commented on what Armstrong said or the radio station’s decision to band Green Day’s music. Green Day is one of the biggest bands on the planet, so it seems unlikely Vegas stations will keep Green Day off the air for long.

At least one Vegas resident called for peace in Armstrong’s comments. “Vegas doesn’t want the A’s,” the comment said. “The owners don’t care either. We’ve been vocal about not wanting the A’s and it falls on deaf ears. Please don’t blame Vegas. We didn’t do anything.”

There are still a few years before the first A’s game happens in Vegas, anyway. The team will play at a minor-league Sacramento ballpark at least through 2027 while the Vegas stadium is built. For the time being, Armstrong and other Oakland residents will have to be satisfied with the Oakland Ballers, or “B’s,” an independent Pioneer League team that launched in 2024.

More celebrities have expressed their disappointment and frustration towards the Supreme Court of the United States, as Roe vs. Wade was overturned. And while some directed their frustration toward the judges who made the decision or anti-abortion ers, Green Day‘s lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong expressed his anger towards America as a country.

Armstrong told concert attendees in London during their “Hella Mega Tour” that he will be renouncing his US citizenship after the Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe vs. Wade. He described America as a “fucking miserable excuse for a country” after everything the country had to deal with.

“Fuck America, I’m fucking renouncing my citizenship. I’m fucking coming here. There’s just too much fucking stupid in the world to go back to that miserable fucking excuse for a country. Oh, I’m not kidding. You’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days.”

According to concertgoers on Twitter, Green Day opened their London Tour with “American Idiot”, which they described as “fitting” due to recent political events in the US.

Fans showed for Green Day after conservatives were offended by the lead singer’s comments. Fans knew that Armstrong was vocal about these issues for a long time, especially since his song “American Idiot” addressed his frustrations nearly 20 years ago.

Green Day is one of many other musicians that were vocal against the Supreme Court ruling. Artists such as P!nk, Olivia Rodrigo, and Megan Thee Stallion voiced out their anger, frustration, and disappointment towards the Supreme Court’s decision.

Roe vs Wade was overturned by SCOTUS on June 24, 2022, giving each of the 50 states the ability to ban abortions without government interference. According to Politico, only 21 states like California, New York, and Florida, will most likely make abortions legal in their states, while 13 states made the medical procedure illegal due to trigger laws.

After getting framed for bank robbery in their last music video for “Bang Bang,” Green Day take a different route in their emotional new video for “Still Breathing.” The song is taken off their latest record, Revolution Radio, and if you’re looking for a Green Day track with a pop edge that cements itself in your head, here you have it. The “Still Breathing” video finds frontman Billie Joe Armstrong at his lowest, but through it all, he still finds a way to persevere by the end. Given the fact that the song’s lyrics allude to past addictions that Armstrong dealt with in real life, the video probably shares some emotions that he was going through back then, too. Though Green Day are the masters of videos that are high intensity and in your face, meaningful ones like “Still Breathing” are part of the reason why the band is still highly touted as one of the best in the genre. It helps that their Revolution Radio record is some of the best material from Green Day that we’ve seen yet, and it shows us that after two decades in the game, they haven’t lost their spark. Judging by their new music video, they haven’t lost their creativity, either.

greenday770_1 After the failed experiment of releasing three albums in the span of four months, you would have thought Green Day’s ability to nab a number one album was long gone. Those three efforts – ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tre! – that were released in 2012 only managed to peak at number two with ¡Uno!, while ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! fell significantly lower. However, all of that is seemingly irrelevant now with their new record, Revolution Radio, which officially gives the band their third number one debut. Revolution Radio is far and away Green Day’s best effort in the past decade, so the number one charting position is well warranted. In of sales, the record moved 95,000 equivalent album units while 90,000 of them were made up of traditional album sales. Though it debuts higher than ¡Uno!, Revolution Radio actually sells less in its first week than ¡Uno! did by a large margin (95k versus 139k). Number two on the chart this week goes to Norah Jones, while OneRepublic lands their highest charting record with Oh My My at number three. Green Day’s Revolution Radio is musical redemption at its finest after rising from the lowest point in their careers. It’s the kind of success that shoots a jolt of longevity in a band that has already been around for two decades – and if the result is going to be albums like this, that longevity is welcome for as long as we can get it.

The high-intensity punk rock record brings the band back to the forefront of relevance with their lead single “Bang Bang” and catchy pop tracks like “Still Breathing” and “Bouncing Off the Wall.” The band also shows that they haven’t lost the fire when it comes to television performances, as Green Day recently brought the house down with their appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Green Day emulates that sheer raw emotion in the live rendition of “Bang Bang,” and it measures up to the studio version without a flaw. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sounds at his best while manning the microphone, and with bassist Mike Dirnt’s booming bass lines, drummer Tre Cool doesn’t miss a beat. Overall, their “Bang Bang” TV debut does a great job at showing that rock still has a place on late night. Television performances are probably going to be the norm for Green Day over the next couple of months as they continue to promote Revolution Radio, and with the authenticity they showcased on The Tonight Show, future TV gigs will be something to look out for.

As iconic and as legendary as Green Day are, they are not invincible. Despite genre defining records such as Warning or Dookie – or even their magnum opus, American Idiot – they are still subject to scrutiny when it’s warranted. For the latter half of 2012 … well, it was warranted. The group took a risk, maybe too big of a risk, on the trilogy of records known as ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! that were released in the fall of 2012, and they weren’t even part of the same collection. Each its own separate full-length and each its own selection in the band’s discography, the records maybe caught even more heat than if they were just released as a triple disc. To say the lackluster albums tarnished the band’s twenty year legacy may be harsh, but there was a point when most thought that ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! were simply a hole that Green Day couldn’t find their way out of – and that was almost the reality. The band went on an unplanned four year hiatus following frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s battle with alcohol addiction, but when they decided to get together once again, a new Green Day emerged. This new version was one that wasn’t so hellbent on doing things differently, and instead one that did what they know how to do best: write great rock songs. “We’re either going to be stronger than ever or we’re not going to do this” – bassist Mike Dirnt told Armstrong this during his stint in rehab, and it turns out that it ended up being true after all of these years. Green Day goes balls to the walls in its new iteration, and their new album, Revolution Radio, is the best and most personal outing from the band since American Idiot. Revolution Radio isn’t exactly a return to form – think of it as the sequel to an incredible movie, but a decade later. It still has the same charm as before and it has a bunch of things about it that remind you why you loved the original so much in the first place, but it does it in a way that isn’t rehashed – moreso “reimagined.” The “original” in this case is, of course, the angst-filled classic Green Day punk and ideologies they’ve delivered throughout their career, but this time, there’s no frills about it. greenday770_1 Green Day could have tried to make a statement with Revolution Radio and exhaust its stay by creating a massive album with one too many songs on it, but this record comes in at a standard 12 tracks. Headlined by blistering lead single “Bang Bang,” Green Day isn’t afraid of speaking their mind – and they do make that statement – on the breakneck track about ongoing gun violence in the United States. It’s naturally a touchy subject, but if the band were going to come back at all, they had to be Green Day in their natural unapologetic personas. Revolution Radio isn’t as political as “Bang Bang” would lead you to believe, however, as the band includes some signature pop hooks that they’ve made their calling card since 2004. Songs like “Still Breathing” and “Bouncing Off the Wall” are addictive jams, while the former could be Green Day’s best shot at a return to Top 40 radio. Granted, the pop on this album isn’t quite like American Idiot’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends” or “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” but it manages to hold its own, and even in a chart world where EDM-pop dominates it all, these tracks can still make you go, “Yeah, I can see this getting popular.” That being said, Revolution Radio isn’t quite as ambitious as American Idiot or their 2009 record, 21st Century Breakdown, but it’s their most honest and soul-baring effort by far. “If this is what you call the good life/I want a better way to die,” Armstrong bluntly puts it on the near seven minute track, “Forever Now,” which highlights the album’s diversity from straight rock/punk into a more power-rock tone – a sound that’s also found in the opener “Somewhere Now.” Revolution Radio comes to a close with the simplistic acoustic number, “Ordinary World,” and it marks a fitting end to an album that seemingly does it all when it comes to what Green Day is best at churning out. This record could have turned into something much different – a record devoid of any substance or meaning. And who’s to say anyone would even care that Green Day comes out with a new album in the first place? But at the end of the day, the band’s history is overwhelming enough that a comeback of their nature – similar to that of fellow pop-punk group Blink-182 – will always be welcome as long as the end product is good enough. For a band whose career seemed like it was in its dying days, Revolution Radio showcases what it’s like to be alive once again.

Green Day showed off their aggression early on with Revolution Radio, deciding to drop the full speed punk songs “Bang Bang” and title track, “Revolution Radio,” to present to everybody what the record is all about. They’re revealing another side of the full-length, out October 7th, today with the debut of “Still Breathing,” and it’s the strongest outing yet. “Still Breathing” takes a route that is classified as more pop than punk, with verses with vocal melodies that basically double as ear candy. The chorus picks up the pace, but it’s far from the intensity we’ve seen previously. “Still Breathing” is Green Day’s unapologetic cry to make an impact in the mainstream pop world, because although “Bang Bang” is finding success on the rock charts, this sugary number is begging for inclusion on the Top 40. It’s a style that suits Green Day best, and though there’s no word on whether “Still Breathing” is going to be a future single or just simply a promo track, it’s a good option if the band decides that they want to try their hand at pop radio again. Although Green Day is probably pumped that this new song is released, they aren’t feeling as well as they could be. The band was expected to kick off their headlining fall U.S. tour this week, but had to cancel the opening dates due to illness within the band and crew. Their tour, which just might feature “Still Breathing” in its setlist, will now begin on September 26th in Columbus, Ohio.

Green Day Green Day’s fall tour has turned into some of the most anticipated rock shows for the rest of the year, but unfortunately, it isn’t going to be starting exactly when it’s supposed to. The band sent out an update to announce the postponement and cancellation of a couple of opening dates on the tour, due to illnesses within the band and the crew. They wrote in a statement about how sad they were to postpone and cancel, but the infection that they’ve been battling got the best of them. The dates that will be postponed include stops in St. Louis, Chicago, and Detroit, while the cancelled date is Toronto. Their Toronto show was actually supposed to be a performance at the World Cup of Hockey Fan Village, so it makes sense that it isn’t possible to reschedule something like that. Either way, best wishes go out to the band, and hopefully they can get back on stage soon performing at full strength. This fall tour for Green Day is a big one, as the band will be touring around North America and playing smaller club venues instead of their usual big time arenas to their album, Revolution Radio, which is out on October 7th.

It just isn’t a Green Day single without an equally insane music video to go along with it, right? After having witnessed a motorcycle ride to a concert in the video for “Kill the DJ” and the band surrounded by fire in a prison for “Know Your Enemy,” nothing really surprises us anymore. For Green Day’s new video for “Bang Bang,” the trio goes and robs a bank – or at least their lookalikes do. In the “Bang Bang” clip, crooks disguised as Green Day (wearing creepy Green Day masks) rob a bank while the band is playing a rowdy house party, but the criminals luckily have the common decency to appear at the show and throw all the money in the air upon their arrival. The fun video ultimately matches the tone of the song itself, which serves as the lead single for the band’s album, Revolution Radio. “Bang Bang” was directed by legendary punk musician Tim Armstrong, who’s best known as the guitarist and vocalist of Rancid – it’s the first time Green Day’s had a video done by him. You can watch the video for “Bang Bang” above, and while you wait for Revolution Radio, out on October 7th, you can the time by checking out the title track from the record, too.

Green Day’s new album, Revolution Radio, is turning into what could be a highlight of the band’s illustrious 20 year career. Everyone got a taste of what to expect when the band unveiled the lead single, “Bang Bang,” early last month, and now, they’re giving us another dose with the title track, “Revolution Radio.” What “Bang Bang” did was set the tone for the entire album, and the song itself was a furious breakneck rock number brimming with sweet rebellion. “Revolution Radio” continues this trend, but this time the riff-filled jam takes more of a conventional pop route with an incredibly catchy chorus. Lyrically, the song demands your attention as frontman and vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong belts lines like, “We are revolution radio / Operation No Control / And the headline: my love’s bulletproof.” “Revolution Radio” will have a lot of ground to make up if it wants to become more successful than “Bang Bang,” as the latter is currently number one Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart, but we’re feeling optimistic as of now. Green Day have a message with their new album, and they’ve shown it mightily thus far in these two teaser tracks. The band will be taking the new material out on the road when they embark on their fall club tour, and dates can be found on their website. Revolution Radio, meanwhile, arrives on October 7th.

Green Day Tour announcements are exciting for fans enough as it is, but when you see that your favorite band is opting to play small clubs instead of the usual massive arenas, that excitement is turned up a couple of notches. That’s exactly what’s happening with Green Day, as the band is hitting the road this fall to play in smaller venues in of their album, Revolution Radio. Nobody would expect a band of Green Day’s caliber to be playing venues such as New York City’s Webster Hall, which has a capacity of 1,500, or Detroit, Michigan’s The Fillmore, which sports a capacity of 3,000, but they’ll be making it happen. The tour is going to start on September 20th in St. Louis and will go until October 20th, so it isn’t going to be the longest tour in the world, but the limited amount of space in the venues will surely provide an intimate experience for all. To add to the magnitude of just how crazy it is that Green Day is doing this, they’ll be heading back on the road a couple of months later to tour in arenas all around Europe. Green Day obviously isn’t the first large band to play some smaller shows like this, but the fact that it’s going to be in of the new album makes the tour incredibly cool. A full list of the dates can be found on their website, and tickets will go on sale to the general public on September 9th at 9 a.m. Revolution Radio, the band’s 12th studio album, will be released on October 7th.
