Behave.]]>

Before you tell me we’ve already gotten a Will & Grace revival, hear me out. It’s 2025. Egg prices are up, confidence in our leaders is down, and the world could really use a good laugh right now. Enter Hacks ⏤ and the potential spinoff that would leave die-hard fans giddy with glee.

Season 4 of the hit Max comedy begins on April 10, when the first two episodes drop followed by one a week through May 29. As we emotionally prepare to see Jean Smart’s Deborah and Hannah Einbinder’s Ava go toe-t0-toe following that jaw-dropping season 3 finale, it’s only natural to wonder how much more life the show has left. In conversation with Deadline, showrunners Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul Downs revealed that five seasons have always been the plan.

“I think keeping the relationship fresh and making sure there are new places for Deborah and Ava to go, that is the beating heart of the show,” Statsky said. “If we found a way [to do more] that made sense, then maybe, yeah. But right now, that is still the plan.” As the conversation continued, it didn’t take long to see what “more” might look like. When asked whether or not a Jimmy/Kayla spinoff might be in the cards, Statsky said, “Demand it. We’re building up the world, you know">some kind of gold statue. Having achieved her dream of procuring her own late-night talk show, Deborah promised that Ava could be her head writer ⏤ only to totally go back on her word by episode’s end. This resulted in Ava deciding to fight fire with fire and blackmail Deborah in exchange for what she was promised. It was a shocking move, proving just how far Ava’s character has come since season 1 ⏤ and how much she’s learned from Deborah about “being a shark.”

Given that season 4 picks up right where 3 left off, we’re in for plenty of drama. But Hacks is a comedy through and through, so we’ll still want to minimize the amount of champagne we’re drinking while we watch lest it not remain in our mouths for very long. We’ll see how these characters balance this season’s dramedy when Hacks season 4 arrives on Max starting April 10. As for that Jimmy/Kayla spinoff ⏤ your move, Downs.

A ‘Hacks’ star is returning to Broadway, and she wants you to call her by her name https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/celebrities/a-hacks-star-is-returning-to-broadway-and-she-wants-you-to-call-her-by-her-name/ https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/celebrities/a-hacks-star-is-returning-to-broadway-and-she-wants-you-to-call-her-by-her-name/#respond Mon, 10 Mar 2025 16:41:32 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/?p=1841450 When do tickets go on sale?!]]>

Jean Smart has wowed audiences in a variety of roles, from older comedian Deborah Vance on Hacks to the memorable, witty, and dry Carol in Garden State. Now she’s going back to theater.

Smart is starring in the Broadway one-woman show Call Me Izzy. Broadway World describes Call Me Izzy as “a darkly comedic story about one woman in rural Louisiana who has a secret.” Count me in! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Smart’s Broadway resume includes starring in Piaf in 1981 and The Man Who Came To Dinner in 2000.

It’s inspiring to hear Smart talk about her theater background. In a 2024 interview with THR, Smart explained that after attending the University of Washington and majoring in theater, she performed during three summers at the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival. If anyone wants a push to stretch themselves creatively, just listen to Smart’s reason for leaving the popular sitcom Deg Women in 1991. She said, “I think I didn’t want to get used to such an easy schedule and money,” and said “This is fun, but not why I became an actor.” In an interview with Parade, she shared that she felt secure when she got to Hollywood thanks to the time she spent doing theater. As she described, theater actors do eight live performances weekly, but convince audiences that it’s fresh and new.

Although more than a few actors wish they could make a living in the theater and switch to film and TV because it’s more lucrative, or sadly change careers entirely, Smart did well from the start. As she told Variety, “I feel guilty sometimes because I feel like I didn’t really struggle” like other actors who needed a day job to themselves.

Some might say live performance is a lost art, and it doesn’t help the overall mood that over 20 performances have been taken off the Kennedy Center’s schedule now that Donald Trump is the Board of Trustees chairman. However, I’m moved by the fact that an Emmy winner like Smart, who has reached a point in her career where she can truly pick the roles she wants to play, is choosing to star in a Broadway one-woman show. Smart’s love of theater proves that art, creativity, and stories are still here to comfort everyone, even when certain people want to censor the stories being told. The woman in Call Me Izzy sounds just as complex as some of the challenging female characters Smart has portrayed, including her Hacks comedian, Deborah, who wants to live her life on her and not be told when her career is over.

While she hasn’t been back to Broadway in over two decades, Smart played Mrs. Erlynne in the Oscar Wilde play Lady Windermere’s Fan at the Williamstown Theater Festival in 2005. Now that Smart has Call Me Izzy lined up, maybe she’ll star in even more plays. But she still has to appear in Hacks season 4, of course.

Fans will no doubt jump at the chance to see Smart lend her talent to Broadway again. As THR reported, Call Me Izzy. will run May 24 to Aug. 17, 2025 at Studio 54. Anyone who lives in NYC or wants to plan a trip (what a great reason!) can purchase tickets at 10 a.m. E.T. starting on Mar. 18, 2025.

The 2025 Screen Guild Actors Awards nominations were announced on Jan. 8, 2025, and while we’re all cheering about Wicked getting nominated for five awards, I want to talk about one particularly compelling category.

Not one, not two, not three but five amazing actresses were nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. That’s Jean Smart for playing wise Deborah Vance on Hacks, Liza Colón-Zayas and Ayo Edebiri for their clever foodie The Bear characters, Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary, and Kristen Bell (who is also hosting!) for starring alongside the extremely attractive Adam Brody in Nobody Wants This (aka one of my favorite shows of 2024).

Come on! How is anyone supposed to pick just one winner? Let’s break down how incredible these actresses are when it comes to portraying their layered characters. Smart is almost too perfect as an older comedian who has to deal with sexism and ageism in Hollywood. Colón-Zayas stole my heart even more in The Bear season 3, episode 6, “Napkins,” when fans learned about the dark time when she was unemployed and finally found work and family at The Beef. And Edebiri has been knocking it out of the park in every single episode as the vulnerable and smart Sydney, who tries to find her voice while dealing with Carmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) ego and issues (sorry but it’s true).

Brunson not only plays Janine Teagues, one of the best teachers on TV, but she also created Abbott Elementary and is therefore the reason why one of the smartest and loveliest sitcoms exists. Finally, there’s Bell, who lends her pitch-perfect comedic timing to Nobody Wants This as a podcaster who has never opened herself up to true love… until now. But, you know, Brody’s adorable face (and that beard) would make anyone fall in love, so who can blame her?

Every time I try to pick which TV comedy star should win, I get even more frustrated that five awards can’t be handed out. These stars aren’t only skilled actors who have honed their craft for years but good people, too. For example, Brunson has such a kind-hearted approach to making Abbott Elementary and thinks about the people who work on the show as well as the storylines. She told Elle Magazine, “I’m responsible for the employment of many, many people.” She also mentioned “the importance of continuing to open doors for newcomers, who have more room and freedom because of the work that was put in by the people before them.”

If I had to guess, my money would be on Brunson, Edebiri, or Colón-Zayas winning the SAG. Abbott Elementary and The Bear are the two most popular sitcoms in the category, and as much as I loved watching Bell in Nobody Wants This, her performance wasn’t quite as complex as the others’. Sure, one could possibly argue that The Bear has been an awards show darling for far too long and that other shows and actors need to be recognized. But when a show is that wonderful, can anyone really argue with all the accolades?

All I can say is I’m glad I’m not a SAG voter because I would petition the people in charge to let five incredible actresses take home the trophy. I’m almost too excited to watch Bell host the SAG Awards on Feb. 23, 2025 and see who is victorious.

‘I love Ryan’: After meeting Blake Lively twice, a ‘Hacks’ star reveals whether or not she ever wants to see her again https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/celebrities/after-meeting-blake-lively-twice-a-hacks-star-reveals-whether-or-not-she-ever-wants-to-see-her-again/ https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/celebrities/after-meeting-blake-lively-twice-a-hacks-star-reveals-whether-or-not-she-ever-wants-to-see-her-again/#respond Fri, 20 Sep 2024 17:12:57 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/?p=1756546 Buckle up folks, here comes another opinion about Blake Lively!]]>

In case you’ve made the impeccably wise decision not to follow the celebrity drama circuit in the last month or so, Blake Lively isn’t doing so hot in the public eye at the moment. Indeed, the It Ends with Us star drew some heavy criticism after encouraging moviegoers to “wear their florals” to the Justin Baldoni-directed film, and things only escalated when journalist Kjersti Flaa called attention to her past experience with Lively in the form of a decidedly uncomfortable interview.

Attempts to defend Lively have been shot down by the public, as though one person’s bad experience with someone’s poor behavior is capable of defining the person in their entirety. And even if Lively’s good side is only reserved for other famous people, it’s entirely bonkers to think that it doesn’t exist on some level.

And according to famous person Kaitlin Olson, who shores up the cast of the Emmy-winning comedy series Hacks, she would happily invite the company of Lively again after having met her on two separate occasions through Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds, who works closely with Olson’s husband, Rob McElhenney on their Wrexham A.F.C.-related ventures. Per Us:

I’ve met Blake twice, I would love to hang out with them both more often. I love Ryan.

To summarize, Blake Lively has a friend in Kaitlin Olson, was kind of a dirtbag towards Kjersti Flaa, interpreted her movie in a way that a lot of people didn’t agree with, and the Earth has never continued spinning more casually.

I’ve no interest in defending Lively’s poor behavior towards Kjersti with examples of endorsements from other people; I, probably like you, do not know Lively personally, and am unable to judge her character in any way that matters. Naturally, I’ve just as little interest in dubbing Lively a bad person based on said poor behavior, especially considering how entirely valid her outlook on It Ends with Us actually was; Lily Bloom’s story is one of hope and joy first and foremost, and it’s precisely that hope and joy that allows the film to handle its domestic violence themes with the care that it does.

Nevertheless, Lively has made her fair share of mistakes, has yet to own up to some of them, and has treated people in an entirely disrespectful manner. In other words, Lively is a human being, and when you’re famous, the nuances of being human are held against you far more often than someone who isn’t famous. Her being crappy is no more worthy of our emotions than anyone being crappy.

Whatever bad history Lively has with other people is the business of her and those other people, and if you have trouble sleeping at night knowing what Lively has done, maybe you should reconsider putting so much stock into celebrities who don’t know who you are.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were full of sweet and funny moments, and while Hacks beat The Bear for Outstanding Comedy Series, Jean Smart also won her third Emmy for playing the hardened yet endearing comedian Deborah Vance. Besides talking about Smart’s amazing acceptance speech, fans want to know how old she is.

From the Sugarbaker manager Charlene Frazier on Deg Women, to quirky mom Regina Newly on Samantha Who?, Smart has made fans laugh for decades. Since the entire premise of Hacks is that a young comedy writer (Hannah Einbinder’s Ava Daniels) is helping the older Deborah modernize her material, fans are curious about Smart’s age compared to her clever, but sometimes unlikeable character.

How old is Jean Smart, and how old is her brilliant Hacks character, Deborah Vance?

Smart was born on Sept. 13th, 1951 and is 73 years old. While Hacks fans seem unclear about Deborah Vance’s actual age when the HBO series begins, Deborah is 70 in season 3. As a viewer pointed out on Reddit, Jimmy LuSaque Jr (Paul W. Downs) states Deborah’s age in Hacks season 3, episode 1, “Just For Laughs.”

Smart was a brilliant choice to play Deborah, since she really leaned into the role and shows all the nuance and emotion of being told that you’re too old or not good enough anymore. Her time on Hacks is one of Smart’s most memorable parts. When she won her 2024 Emmy, she made everyone laugh and cheer when she joked about the name of the network that Hacks is on. She said, “everybody at HBO… Max… no, I’m sorry. Just what we needed, another network.”

Besides being excited that Smart and I were both born on Sept. 13th, I love reading her interviews, as she has such a wise and calm approach to life. She has thought about the concept of aging a lot, and she shared in an interview with Yahoo! Life that she sees her mom when she sees her reflection in the mirror. She said, “I don’t feel that different than when I did when I was 20 or 30.” She added, “I feel like the same person, except my body isn’t cooperating.”

Like her character, Smart proves you can do anything you want at any age, and no one should tell you otherwise. When she won the 2021 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, which aired on Sept. 19th 2021, she had just turned 70 a few days before. When she won her second and third Emmys for Hacks in 2022 and 2024, she was 71 and 73.

While Deborah might face sexism and ageism, Smart is “grateful” to be starring in so many amazing TV shows and movies in her 70s. She said on “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” that she is “kind of baffled by it, but I’m not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth.” Well, I’m not baffled by it, because Smart shows her amazing talent in every single part she portrays, and the Emmys voters agree!

‘The Bear’s continued awards season dominance has officially irked comedy fans, but there may be a solution https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/tv/the-bears-continued-awards-season-dominance-has-officially-irked-comedy-fans-but-there-may-be-a-solution/ https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/tv/the-bears-continued-awards-season-dominance-has-officially-irked-comedy-fans-but-there-may-be-a-solution/#respond Mon, 16 Sep 2024 15:50:16 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/?p=1754149 And a very easy one, at that.]]>

Another television awards show, another big night for The Bear. Such was the case at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards last night, where Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas all took home acting awards, and series creator Christopher Storer nabbed a directing award for the episode “Fishes.”

The treasure trove of awards that have been flung its way since its inception is just one of many examples of everyone loving The Bear, but at this point, just as many people seem to be fed up with it as well. At least, they’re fed up with its insistence on occupying the Comedy category.

https://twitter.com/beingbecks78/status/1835476934236455014

Those who are lacerating The Bear for competing in the Comedy category aren’t unfounded in their vexations. The Bear‘s material tends to skew quite heavy, with topics such as grief, estrangement, and professional power dynamics fueling its full-throttle, often corrosive emotional heft. In its intensity, it’s much more likely to leave an impression than other, more light-hearted shows that compete in the Comedy category.

However, it would be equally unfair to suggest that The Bear is taking up space that it doesn’t belong in. The Bear‘s comedic edge is razor-sharp and always on, and it’s in fact precisely because of its relationship with tension that it can have such a successful relationship with levity, and vice versa. The show’s dramatic indignance is symbiotic with its warmer relief, and the spirited ebb and flow that they enable together is a testament to The Bear‘s strength as a piece of art, and a powerful exercise in both dramatic and comedic storytelling.

It’s furthermore worth noting that the majority of programs competing in the Comedy section would, like The Bear, most aptly be characterized as dramedies. Such programs include Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs, and Hacks, the latter of which was the other big winner of the evening with a win for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Previous awards season darling Ted Lasso is another example.

This is to say that most of the shows competing in the Comedy category approach their comedy by rooting it in the complex, contradictory, often tragic and just as frequently ridiculous ordeal of the human condition; The Bear just happens to be really, really good at that. Just as noteworthy is the fact that much of Succession—the Emmys juggernaut of yesteryear—owes much of its prestige to its humorous stylings despite only ever competing in the Drama category, where the majority of its competitors did not have a similar relationship to comedy.

And yet, no one seemed to mind Succession‘s multi-year dominance, as if the Drama category is more prestigious than the Comedy category, or as if the Comedy category was created for shows that simply wouldn’t catch the eye of the Academy otherwise. This, in spite of the fact that the success of both The Bear and Succession come from the same thing; both shows understand how to tap into the raw power of the human condition, in all its pathos and venom and absurdity, and how to make an impression with it.

Neither is concerned with being especially funny or being especially dramatic, and are instead precisely interested in being the best versions of themselves. That artistic honesty goes as long a way as the deftness with which the material approached, and the very human emotional depth of it all is the key ingredient to making everything—from the drama to the comedy—stick and stand out. Baby Reindeer boasts similar merits.

So what’s the solution? A Dramedy category for all the shows that don’t lean far enough one way or the other? An abolishment of Drama and Comedy as categories altogether for the sake of one, ultimate Outstanding Programming category? A mass cognitive shift wherein we all learn to recognize that the shows are meant to elevate the prestige of the award, rather than the other way around?

Or what about accepting that the notion of serious competition beyond being nominated by the Academy (which is more than enough recognition) is kind of ridiculous and counterproductive to most all honest discourse around this specific artform? Indeed, maybe the solution is to stop making this a problem. The Bear is great, Hacks is great, Shōgun is great, Abbott Elementary is great. The planets are still aligned, and all the egos worth being intact are still intact. Carry on.

Now that we’ve reached the season finale of Hacks, there’s only one question on everyone’s minds: is a season 4 on the way? Surely this can’t be the end of the razor-sharp dark comedy? The third season of Hacks successfully dove deeper into the evolving relationship between Deborah and Ava, as well as their personal lives. But there’s still so much we want to see.

Hacks follows the tumultuous but evolving relationship between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and young, struggling writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). As they work together to rejuvenate Deborah’s career, their generational and personal clashes lead to comedic and heartfelt moments and season 3 explored more of their dynamic relationship.

The season picked up after the emotional climax of season 2, where Deborah decided to reinvent her career after firing Ava. However, like magnets, the two were drawn together once again and reunited. We saw Deborah enjoy her new wave of fame, and subsequently fall into writer’s block. Ava, on the other hand, got her heart broken as she watched her relationship with her actress girlfriend Ruby go down the drain. In the most recent episode, a compilation of Deborah’s most problematic jokes from her past becomes viral, and we see the comedienne face modern-day cancel culture.

Will there be a season 4 of Hacks?

As of now, Max has not officially confirmed a fourth season of Hacks. However, given the show’s critical success and strong fanbase, there is optimism about its renewal. The series has consistently received high praise for its writing, performances, and production quality, making a compelling case for its continuation. The creators and cast have also expressed interest in exploring more stories within the Hacks universe.

Jean Smart in particular has hinted at her enthusiasm for further developing Deborah’s character and her journey. Thankfully, Hacks has a consistent tradition of announcing a new season a few weeks after the season finale, so there’s hope on that front. Altogether, fans may have to wait a little bit more for any updates on the show’s fate. Nonetheless, with Hacks’ popularity, and the creative team’s dedication, the possibility of a season 4 looks promising.

The heart of Hacks lies in its stellar cast. Jean Smart’s portrayal of Deborah Vance has earned her widespread acclaim and several awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Hannah Einbinder also shines as Ava Daniels, capturing the complexities of a young writer trying to find her voice in a cutthroat industry. The ing cast includes standout performances from Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Marcus, Kaitlin Olson as DJ, Megan Stalter as Kayla Schaefer, and Mark Indelicato as Damien.

The 2022 Emmy Awards have come and gone, bringing with them some exciting triumphs for the world of television and those who make it.

As expected, Squid Game took home multiple well-deserved honors including Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Jung Ho-yeon and Outstanding Directing for Hwang Dong-hyuk. Last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys presentation, Lee Yoo-mi won for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, bringing the total number of Emmys for Netflix’s most-viewed show of all time to three. As much as fans were hoping that it would take home the gold for Outstanding Drama Series, Succession ultimately nabbed the title along with an Outstanding ing Actor in a Drama award for Matthew Macfadyen.

Double nominee Sydney Sweeney did not take home any awards tonight, but her Euphoria co-star Zendaya made history with her second win for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, becoming the youngest two-time Emmy winner in history and the first Black woman to win the award twice. Equally exciting was Quinta Brunson’s Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series win for Abbott Elementary and⏤expected though they were⏤return wins for Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) and Jean Smart (Hacks) in the Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Comedy categories, respectively.

Brett Goldstein surprised absolutely no one with his second Emmy win in a row for Ted Lasso, nor did John Oliver for Last Night Tonight with John Oliver (does the guy ever not win?). Fans were disturbed, however, to see the Squid Game doll⏤yes, that one⏤live in living color on the Emmy stage when co-stars Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon came out to present the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, but not before playing a quick game of Red Light, Green Light.

As most award shows go, the night was not without its surprises. Julia Garner took home Emmy gold for Outstanding ing Actress in a Drama Series for Ozark, which fans wasted no time declaring a robbery since it meant Jung Ho-yeon did not win for Squid Game. Moments later, Sheryl Lee Ralph won Outstanding ing Actress in a Comedy for Abbott Elementary, beating out Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) and Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) and delivering a speech for the ages that included a show-stopping musical number.

Kenan Thompson pulled no punches as the ceremony’s host, roasting Netflix and Leonardo DiCaprio in equal measure and famously reuniting with his Good Burger co-star Kel Mitchell as part of the night’s shenanigans. Oscar winner Geena Davis became the recipient of the 2022 Governor’s Award for promoting gender balance and equality in the entertainment industry via her Institute on Gender in Media, and viewers were even treated to a reunion from The Brady Bunch.

The biggest winner of the night was HBO’s The White Lotus, which took home awards for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Best Writing (Mike White), Best Directing (also White), Best ing Actress (Jennifer Coolidge, who gave quite the speech), and Best ing Actor (Murray Bartlett). It was a refreshing night for television⏤even Lizzo won an award⏤and a reminder of just how much quality television there is thanks to the exactly one million streaming services now at our fingertips.

Hi gay! Happy Pride month. To celebrate all you queer thangs, Hacks star and the internet comedian behind those viral Pride memes Meg Stalter is getting her own HBO Max show. We love a queen getting her coin.

According to Variety the series is called Church Girls and inspired by Stalter’s own life. It follows a 20-year-old Christian closeted lesbian named Beth Parker juggling her sexuality and religious faith in a suburban town in Ohio. This plot? She really ate and left no crumbs. Those poor ants.

Praying to Miss Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta AKA Lady Gaga we get a cameo from a Butter Shop employee.

Stalter created the pilot for the show and it will executive produce it alongside Gabe Liedman, Mackenzie Roussos and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. It will be co-produced by HBO Max and A24.

The resident funny gal celebrated the good news in a tweet sharing the Variety report.

“The Gay God girls are making a pilot.”

Stalter was the breakout star in HBO’s Hacks series. She played Kayla, Jimmy’s (Paul W. Downs) overbearing and nepotist child assistant, and starred alongside Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, Downs, Kaitlin Oslin, Carl Clemons-Hopkins and more.

RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Katya gave the show a raving review on Twitter, describing it as the “best show on television”.

The internet comedian will next star in Cora Bora, a dark comedy about a struggling artist (Stalter) who returns home to Portland to try and win her girlfriend’s love. The project will be directed by Hannah Pearl Utt and written by Rhianon Jones (Shiva Baby).

In a surprise to nobody, HBO Max has renewed the Emmy-winning smash hit Hacks for a third season. The first season was nominated for six Emmys and took home three. The comedy series is about a young comedy writer named Ava (Hannah Einbinder) who gets hired by an old legendary stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) to freshen up her material.

Season two premiered on May 12th, and critics have had nothing but praise for the writing, directing, and acting. Caroline Framke for Variety wrote:

“It’s a joy (and relief) to report that Season 2 doesn’t miss a beat. Whether in Vegas or on the road, ‘Hacks’ knows exactly where to find its punchlines and when to trust its cast to deliver them with the singular deadpan.”

In an Actors on Actors discussion with Jean Smart, Martin Short praised Meg Stalter on her character Kayla, the assistant to series co-creator Paul W. Downs’ character Jimmy. He said, “In every scene she’s in, where she has to be deeply unlikable and deeply offensive as an assistant, she does it originally.”

Erin Underhill, the President of Universal Television, had this to say with Thursday’s renewal announcement:

The first two seasons of HACKS — expertly crafted by Lucia, Paul and Jen —gave us beloved, complex characters who make us laugh and feel deeply. We’re thrilled that our HBO Max partners have renewed this standout series for a third season, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Deborah, Ava and the rest of our outstanding ensemble.

The full cast includes Christopher McDonald, Kaitlin Olson, Paul W. Downs, Poppy Liu, Rose Abdoo, Mark Indelicato, and Meg Stalter. Season two also brought in some new recurring guest stars like Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, Ming-Na Wen, Susie Essman, Margaret Cho, and Devon Sawa. All episodes of season two are now streaming on HBO Max.

The award-winning hit HBO Max series Hacks just released a teaser trailer for its second season. The series made waves last year with critics and audiences alike. It took home 3 Emmys including Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Lead Actress for Jean Smart.

The series is about a young comedy writer named Ava (Hannah Einbinder) who gets hired by a legendary older stand up comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) to freshen up her material. Last season ended with Vance ending her decades-old Las Vegas residency, and wanting to work out her new material on the road.

In this 56-second teaser, with the help of Mama Cass’ “Make Your Own Kind of Music,” we see the ladies on the road, throwing objects at each other, paint balling, boating, and even a little dumpster diving. The official synopsis for season 2 is:

“The dark mentorship between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance and her young, entitled writer Ava continues to evolve as the two travel across the country workshopping Deborah’s new stand-up act.”

Returning for season 2 are Kaitlin Olson, Paul W. Downs, Meg Stalter, and Carl Clemons-Hopkins. New additions to the cast include Laurie Metcalf and Ming-Na Wen, and Margaret Cho will show up as a guest star.

Season 1 holds a certified fresh critics rating of 100 percent. Ben Travers of Indiewire gave season 1 an A- saying,

“Against all odds, the HBO Max comedy from co-creators and showrunners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky grows in appeal with every episode, succeeding on the expert execution and sound structure of great scripts as well as the never-in-doubt genius of Smart.”

Hacks is set to premiere on May 12 on HBO Max.
