Like how Givens' cases go, there are a lot of pathways here. ]]>
<![CDATA[

If a television show proves memorable and maintains a certain level of quality from inception to conclusion, odds are a revival of some sort will take shape at some point down the road.

It is why the Full House, Dexter and Murphy Brown franchises returned and why, today, Justified: City Primeval brings Timothy Olyphant back to the character he played for half a decade back in the 2010s. The limited series is available in a variety of places and here is how you can go about watching it.

To begin with, the further adventures of Olyphant’s Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens will air on the FX cable television network which was the home of the original project. It will air weekly after the back-to-back premiere tonight of two episodes through to Aug. 29 and apart from Olyphant (who is perhaps conveniently ed by his daughter) no other characters from the original run are returning for now. It can also be accessed on the FXNOW streaming service which does not have the main series, and, if you want to watch both, there are conventional streaming options as well as pay-per-episode platforms, too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6KEgWSFfaE&ab_channel=FXNetworks

In the first category, you can head over to Hulu. For the second, you can find the episodes on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and even Google Play’s content rental service. All feature just the show and no special add-ons or bonus content.

To sum up, there’s a lot to look forward to for Justified fans. Here’s hoping the story, which did not initially involve Givens when it was first written, turns out to be as captivating over a decade later.

This guy can play a lawman like nobody's business.]]>
<![CDATA[

Everybody knows Timothy Olyphant. He’s one of those actors you recognize, even if you aren’t sure what his name is or what you’ve seen him in previously. It’s one of the highest compliments a moviegoer or TV fan can pay an actor: committing their face to memory despite them not being a megastar.

Olyphant is in the midst of a TV renaissance. After acclaimed turns in Fargo season 4 and The Mandalorian season 2, the actor has decided to reprise his most famous character in the miniseries Justified: City Primeval. The miniseries will serve as a sequel to Justified, which ran from 2010 to 2015 and earned Olyphant a Primetime Emmy nomination.

As a means of commemorating Olyphant’s big moment, we decided to comb through his career and polish off the actor’s ten best films and shows. (Spoilers: Justified made the list)

10. Live Free or Die Hard (2007) 274z28

Olyphant knows how to chew scenery. He can bring a level of specificity to a character that can make up for one-dimensional writing, and that’s exactly what he managed to do when he appeared in Live Free or Die Hard.

The fourth installment in the iconic Die Hard franchise may not get talked about much these days, but Olyphant’s hacker terrorist was a worthy adversary for an aging Bruce Willis. Especially when you consider the unexpected, and outlandish way in which his character gets killed. Yippee Ki Yay indeed.

9. The Santa Clarita Diet (2017-19) 236y2v

Olyphant is so good at being menacing that it’s easy to forget how funny he can be. He stole the show whenever he guest starred on a sitcom like The Office or The Good Place, but The Santa Clarita Diet provided audiences with the most focused version of what a silly Olyphant performance looked like.

The Santa Clarita Diet wasn’t the most groundbreaking or outrageous show on Netflix, but it was consistent, and it knew to emphasize the unlikely chemistry between Olyphant and Drew Barrymore. Olyphant’s reactions are worth the price of ission alone.

8. A Perfect Getaway (2009) 3a2u4g

A Perfect Getaway is about anything but. Newlyweds Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich) decide to hike through a secluded area of Hawaii for their honeymoon. Things are going smoothly until they encounter a group of hikers who claim to know about a murder. The four of them are miles away from civilization, which means they are going to have to determine what to do next on their own…

The film is a meat-and-potatoes thriller that gets the job done. The cast is uniformly excellent, and Olyphant once again excels as a guy whose true motives are unclear. We won’t spoil what happens, because the film is not particularly well-known, but we suggest checking it out.

7. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) 6v1t

Olyphant is not in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for very long, but he makes his screen time count. He plays Jim Stacy, a real life actor, who gets tasked with filming an episode of the TV show Lancer with hungover guest star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio). Olyphant proves himself to be a terrific scene partner, both in reality and in the fictional recreation of the show.

He gives DiCaprio just the right amount of push to deliver an Oscar-nominated performance, and manages to hold his own with a few comical line deliveries. He also looks cool riding a motorcycle in the “California Dreamin” montage, which remains one of the best scenes in Quentin Tarantino’s directorial career.

6. The Crazies (2010) 1a5443

Olyphant is always playing sheriffs. The Crazies is a remake of the George Romero film of the same name, and while it lacks the ingenuity of its predecessor, it remains a tense and oftentimes thrilling riff on the zombie formula.

Olyphant tries to corral the survivors of a biological agent that turns people violent, and delivers the kind of old school combination of toughness and neuroticism that one would expect from an actor like Roy Schieder (who also played an overwhelmed lawman in Jaws).

5. High Life (2009) 3d6n1

Olyphant is at his best when he’s dancing on the line between charming and sleazy. High Life, not to be confused with the arty, Robert Pattinson film of the same name, is a heist flick that allows Olyphant to dance on this line for most of its runtime. He looks like a mess, and does some bafflingly dumb things along the way, but he manages to keep us hooked with his intensity.

We could have spotlit the actor’s great work on The Mandalorian here, or even Curb Your Enthusiasm, but High Life is a lesser-known film that features a more substantial performance from Olyphant, so it got the five spot.

4. Go (1999) 71p16

Go (1999) has amassed a cult following in the years since its release, but it still deserves more credit. The film blends crime and comedy in ways that are still unexpected today, and the ensemble cast, which is made up of future stars like Katie Holmes, Seth Green, Taye Diggs and Melissa McCarthy, has aged like a fine wine.

That being said, Olyphant steals the show. He’s repulsive and magnetic as drug dealer Todd, who likes to push people’s buttons after they buy from him. The rest of the cast may have more screen time, but Olyphant embodies the film’s chaotic energy better than anyone.

3. Scream 2 (1997) 1u1552

Scream is the franchise that keeps on chugging along. Scream VI was a box office hit this year, proving that there’s a desire to see deranged characters dress up like Ghostface and taunt the survivors of previous installments. Scream VI is a fun time, but we maintain that Scream 2 remains the best sequel in the franchise.

Olyphant is a big part of why the film holds up. He’s terrific as a movie-obsessed college student who likes to pontificate on the genius of James Cameron when he isn’t hacking up his classmates with a knife. Is it subtle? Not at all. But Olyphant understands the assignment, and he delivers in spades.

2. Deadwood (2004-06, 2019) t2f4t

Deadwood was a great show. We’re not saying anything that fans don’t already know, but anyone reading the list who hasn’t seen the show, we could not recommend it more. The show only ran for two seasons on HBO, but Olyphant left such an indelible impression as Sheriff Seth Bullock (a real guy btw) that it remains one of his most iconic performances.

As Bullock, Olyphant was sneakily funny and constantly angry. He tries to maintain a semblance of order in the titular town, which could not have been any more of a fool’s errand. He also brought the goods when he returned for Deadwood: The Movie (2019).

1. Justified (2010-15, 2023) g2e2c

https://youtu.be/N6KEgWSFfaE

Nobody should be surprised. Justified was the perfect showcase for Olyphant, allowing him to be charming, intimidating, and funny in the span of a single episode. The character of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens was conceived by pulp novelist Elmore Leonard, and while Givens lacks the cultural significance of a Tony Soprano or a Don Draper, he remains one of the most well-conceived protagonists of 2010s television.

“There is a level of professionalism that runs through a lot of Elmore’s work, that I think Raylan possesses to some degree,” Olyphant told Esquire in 2014. “He takes things like being a man of your word and certain ways you treat people — I think those are things that are very attractive about the character.” We can’t wait to see Olyphant’s take on the character in Justified: City Primeval.

Is the show being targeted?]]>
<![CDATA[

Three weeks after a gunfight interrupted production, Justified: City Primeval has been hit with more unjustified violence, this time in the form of an “incendiary device.”

On Monday night, an unknown assailant lit the device and hurled it toward the FX show’s set, which was on 1000-block South Desplaines Street in the South Loop area of Chicago. Thankfully, it did not detonate and no one was hurt. Detectives are investigating the incident.

Last month, the crew and cast, presumably including Timothy Olyphant, ducked for cover when two cars carrying people engaged in a gunfight crashed into the set. No one was injured but, as FX chairman John Landgraf stated, “it was a pretty traumatic experience for the cast and crew to be anywhere near that kind of gunfire.” Shell casings were found nearby.

“A lot was done to take a break and make sure everyone was OK,” Landgraf continued, “and we [increased] security.” Among the new hires, according to Deadline, was a hostage negotiator with a team of former Navy SEALs and Army Rangers. They were trained to snuff out future threats.

While that may have seemed excessive at the time, the newest incident confirmed that the gunfight was not an anomaly. Either people are targeting the spinoff to the acclaimed FX show Justified or the show is being filmed in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Justified: City Primeval is expected to be released in 2023 barring more gunfights, bombs, and whatever else Chicago will throw at it.

Quentin Tarantino is in talks to direct an episode or two of FX's limited series revival 'Justified: City Primeval'.]]>
<![CDATA[

Quentin Tarantino remains adamant that he’s retiring from feature film directing after his tenth movie, but there’s nothing stopping the two-time Academy Award winner from taking his talents to the small screen, as evidenced by the fact Deadline is reporting that he’s in talks to helm an episode or two of FX’s revival Justified: City Primeval.

It might come as a surprise to hear the Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs icon is heading to television, but it makes sense on a number of fronts. Author Elmore Leonard created the Raylan Givens character that served as the basis for Justified, and he also wrote the novel Rum Punch, which was adapted by Tarantino as Jackie Brown.

justified

Not only that, but Justified star and executive producer Timothy Olyphant played a ing role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as James Stacy, so there are several pieces that fit snugly together. Tarantino hasn’t stepped behind the camera on a TV show since CSI: Crime Scene Investigation‘s 2005 episode “Grave Danger”, so this is a very big deal.

City Primeval will pick up eight years after the Justified finale, with Olyphant’s U.S. Marshal now back in Miami having left Kentucky behind, where the modern-day cowboy will eventually find himself in Detroit on the trail of a violent criminal known as the Oklahoma Wildman. There’s no official confirmation as of yet, but fingers crossed Tarantino signs on the dotted line.

Now that Timothy Olyphant has been confirmed for Justified: City Primeval, fans demand the return of Walton Goggins.]]>
<![CDATA[

FX’s acclaimed six-season modern Western Justified may have been a showcase for the laconic charm, easygoing charisma and action hero credentials of leading man Timothy Olyphant’s U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, but Walton Goggins’ Boyd Crowder was just as integral to the sprawling story.

It’s gone down in television folklore that the infamous Kentucky outlaw was originally only supposed to be killed off in the pilot, but the actor ended up sticking around for the duration. The scenes between Olyphant and Goggins could always be relied on to generate sparks, and their chemistry was rightly regarded as one of Justified‘s strongest suits.

With that in mind, it’s completely understandable that fans have been demanding the criminal with the sh*t-eating grin return alongside his opposite number in the recently-announced limited series City Primeval, as you can see from the reactions below.

The last time we saw Boyd, he was still very much alive, although he was in prison for the litany of crimes he’d committed across the years. Raylan even lied to him that Joelle Carter’s Ava had died in a car crash three years earlier to protect her safety, so there’s definitely plenty of meaty narrative ground left to cover.

Even if Goggins doesn’t return as a series regular, Justified: City Primeval would definitely be missing a trick if it didn’t at least rope him in for a cameo appearance of some description.

Timothy Olyphant is returning as U.S. Marshal Raylan givens in limited series Justified: City Primeval at FX.]]>
<![CDATA[

Seven years after the series finale, Timothy Olyphant will be dusting off his six shooter to throw on the wide-brimmed hat of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens for limited series Justified: City Primeval.

Deadline brings the news that FX has given the green light to the adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, which was first teased last year. Olyphant will also executive produce alongside the show’s creator Graham Yost, in addition to writers Dave Andron and Michael Dinner, with the latter directing.

Justified won widespread acclaim during its original six-season run, landing two Primetime Emmy wins from eight nominations in total, with none of the seasons dropping below a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, even if ratings were never as consistently strong as the quality of the television on offer.

justified

City Primeval picks up eight years after the end of Justified, with Givens now back in Miami and trying to maintain a work/life balance as the father of a 14 year-old daughter. However, he ends up heading to Detroit after encountering a violent criminal known as The Oklahoma Wildman, presumably leaving a trail of bodies and dry one-liners in his wake as he’s wont to do.

What’s old is almost always new again in Hollywood, but fans will nonetheless be celebrating wildly now that Olyphant has committed to getting back in the saddle as one of the small screen’s most memorable modern cowboys.

Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell and Holly Taylor in The Americans Last night, the winners of the fifth annual Critics’ Choice TV Awards were revealed, with HBO and FX proving the biggest winners with five victories apiece. The two networks went head to head in multiple categories, though wins were somewhat evenly split – The Americans trumped Game of Thrones for Best Drama Series, but Silicon Valley beat You’re the Worst for Best Comedy Series, and so on. The Critics’ Choice TV Awards has a tradition of picking fan favorites, and that didn’t change this year, with Empire‘s Taraji P. Henson picking up Best Actress (Drama), Jeffrey Tambor taking Best Actor (Comedy) for his revelatory performance in Transparent, and Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks both triumphing in their categories. In the limited series category, HBO’s Olive Kitteridge (rightly) cleaned up, thought that entire category was a little strange this year, with American Crime and American Horror Story: Freak Show both contending despite the anthology series having new seasons on the way. It was a great evening for freshman favorites, with wins for Silicon ValleyEmpireBetter Call Saul and Transparent, but also one that honored underrated veterans – The Americans gets snubbed for Emmys year after year and finally came into its own here, while Amy Schumer is only now getting serious attention for her Comedy Central series. Check out the full list of winners on the next page.

Timothy Olyphant in Justified The Critics’ Choice TV Awards, long a better measure of quality on the small screen than the Emmy Awards, unveiled the nominees in this year’s race today, with the final season of FX’s Justified and HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge both leading with five total nominations. Other big winners include FX’s acclaimed spy drama The Americans, Amazon’s revelatory comedy Transparent, PBS series Wolf Hall (a latecomer to the field that clearly made a big impression), HBO biopic Bessie and CBS stalwart The Good Wife, all with four nominations. From a different perspective, the most exciting nominations come in the form of the freshman nominees. You’re the Worst, one of my favorite shows of last year, is going up against HBO’s heavy hitters like Veep and Silicon Valley – ahead of its season 2 bow, the nod will certainly do wonders for the series, which FX has shuffled to less-proven sister network FXX. Meanwhile, Best Actor in a Comedy nominees Will Forte and Anthony Anderson both hail from new series (ABC’s Blackish and Fox’s The Last Man on Earth), and there’s also acting representation from ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat, Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Transparent. There are some intriguing layers to this year’s nominees. ABC submitted American Crime as a limited series, which suggests it will not be returning for a second season. Orange is the New Black, last year’s Comedy winner, is now competing in Drama. And HBO film Nightingale, which hasn’t even aired yet, is nominated in Best Movie Made for Television and Best Actor in a Movie or Limited Series. Check out the full list of nominees after the page break.

Justified Series Finale Review 3k6m50 “The Promise” (Season 6, Episode 13) https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/tv/justified-series-finale-review-promise-season-6-episode-13/ https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/tv/justified-series-finale-review-promise-season-6-episode-13/#respond <![CDATA[Sam Woolf]]> Wed, 15 Apr 2015 06:14:58 +0000 <![CDATA[Reviews]]> <![CDATA[TV]]> <![CDATA[Justified]]> <![CDATA[Justified Reviews]]> <![CDATA[TV Reviews]]> http://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/?p=422835 <![CDATA[
Justified honours its creator by dying as it lived: as one of sharpest written, most unpredictable, and skillfully produced shows on television.]]>
<![CDATA[

Timothy Olyphant in Justified More than its criminals and marshals, more than its lawmen and outlaws, more than its cases of the week and blood feuds that ran deep, Justified was a show about storytellers. It was a series populated by characters fast on the draw, and quicker with a plan, but when it comes down to it, every one of those characters we came to love was a born talker. Whether it’s Boyd, the man never more comfortable than when in front of an audience, Ava, the survivor who wrote her own destiny, or Raylan, our taciturn hero, it’s what these people said, more than what they did that’ll linger. You can almost look at “The Promise” as being two different finales: one for the season, and one for the series. The former is a tad messy, overstuffed and unable to fully tie up every loose end as cathartically as most would hope. Even if the hour had been more devoted to dealing with Markham, Boone, the money, and everything outside of our main trio, I don’t think there would have been a way to properly send-off every character and plotline with total satisfaction. “The Promise” is smart enough to not even try, blazing through plot machinations in order to give us space for those revelatory final 15 minutes. The rushed pace makes it easier to ignore the spotty-at-best geography and timing of many events, such as Boyd’s escape from the mountain, or Boone’s tracking down of Raylan. The first half of “The Promise” is more about cleaning up house than building momentum. Mere minutes after Markham is revealed at the height of his malice, he’s put down by Boyd, gifted a bullet to the eye that the last remaining Crowder had sworn to deliver him earlier this season. The next minute, there’s Raylan (“God damn, Raylan, your timing sucks!” Boyd bellows), and the standoff we’ve waited for for 6 years is quickly undone by a simple fact: Boyd’s too smart to try and pull on Raylan. With that, Ava and Boyd are in custody, and Raylan has not only proven his innocence, but maybe even saved his soul. It’s a swift end to a dilemma that’s been gnawing at him all season, perfunctory in a manner similar to how Art bails Raylan out of his custodial jam without a second thought. (ittedly, having Art and Raylan go on one last shakedown together was a hoot). Then, barely after the halfway marker of the episode, “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” starts playing, and a panic sets in. Boone corners Raylan on a stretch of road, ready to finally show it down. After so much buildup to this moment, the High Noon on the highway is over moments after it even begins. Raylan and Boone trade a couple lines with each other, and then pull. Boone goes for the headshot, and puts one through Raylan’s Stetson. Raylan goes for the chest, and it takes Loretta’s interference to make sure Boone doesn’t get one more off before dying. As she walks up on the stock-still Raylan, you don’t know what she’s about to find.

As Justified comes to a close, we look back on 10 episodes that made an Elmore Leonard adaptation into one of TV's best dramas of the last half-decade.]]>

Justified Tomorrow marks the end of FX’s Justified, and along with it, one of the most reliably engrossing, sharp, and flat-out entertaining shows on television. The series made a 60-page short story into a crime show like no other, transporting viewers to a patch of rural Kentucky populated by criminals as likeable and clever as the cops. Before Raylan Givens walks off into the sunset, allow me to attempt the difficult task of narrowing down six years of fantastic writing, direction, and acting into the 10 episodes representing the very best of Justified. We’ll miss the show greatly once it’s gone, but at least we’ll have the following 10 hours, and many more to look back on when ing the legend of one of FX’s all-time great shows, and one of TVs recent best, period.

Justified hosts a twilight shootout in the garden of outlaw and hero, and sets the stage for next week's series finale.]]>
<![CDATA[

Walton Goggins and Timothy Olyphant in Justified In its penultimate hour, Justified opens with a Harlan gone mad. Raylan’s left his badge and star behind, and is now a fugitive from his own people. Boyd’s in an officer’s uniform, which allows him to “commandeer” a truck driven by a local boy (played by Boardwalk Empire’s Shea Whigham). Before we even get to the opening credits, Raylan’s written his will, and Ava’s digging a grave. “One bad omen on top of another,” Ava says of her current predicament. “I ain’t superstitious,” Zachariah replies. Guess the guy probably doesn’t watch much TV. If we’re looking for an oracle to divine where all this bad mojo is coming from, there’s no one better to ask than the guy who has relied on luck the most to survive Justified: Wynn Duffy. “Raylan Givens, Boyd Crowder, and Avery Markham are soon to converge, Mr. Vasquez, like the aligning of the planets – if those planets carried guns,” Duffy tells the A.D.A. before leaving the care of federal custody. What’s promised is a cataclysmic confrontation between legends, atop a mountain no less. What we get is the usual Justified two-step: one foot forward, the other kicking your feet out from under you. There’s something comforting about knowing that, to the very end, I’ll be as successful at staying one step ahead of Justified as the burly Cope is at getting away from Raylan. We haven’t seen the hill folk heavy since back in Season 4’s “Kin,” which was the last time we watched Boyd and Raylan scale a mountain to chase a goose. They were after Drew Thompson (sadly, it looks like Jim Beaver couldn’t figure back into the final season), and had as much success finding him as they do trying to find Ava now, or her weighty ill-gotten gains. “Collateral” would have been a hike up memory lane no matter what happened: final episodes of TV shows inevitably make one wax nostalgic for where this all began, and what brought us to this point. Memories of “Kin” only grow stronger once Boyd and Raylan finally collide on that mountainside. As lead begins to fly, it’s clear that the only people more excited about this confrontation than us are these two. Raylan and Boyd’s relationship is nothing if not ionate and mutual. Separated, the two loath, despise, and fixate on one another. Put them in a room together, though, and they couldn’t be happier. The two parted in “Kin” with Boyd tied to a tree by Raylan, letting him know with a grin, “I don’t like you.” “Never liked you much neither, Boyd,” Raylan called back with a smirk. Director Michael Pressman imbues the moonlit slope with Shakespearean grandeur, as though no better a time or place could stage the final act of Boyd and Raylan’s little drama. The two transition from trading cheeky barbs (Boyd’s white vest pops in the night as much as Raylan’s hat, but it’s those pearly whites that give him away), to looking right into the darkness that has brought them to this place. “You’ve given up everything you are so that you could murder me,” Boyd tells him, almost regretfully. “I cross the line with my eyes wide open,” Raylan answers back. Duffy’s earlier prophecy could use a little tweaking, as Markham hangs back for most of “Collateral.” By the end, the barn containing him, Boon, Loretta, and soon Ava looks to be the center of the solar system, with Raylan and Boyd blown (almost literally, in the latter’s case) out of orbit. But the planet analogy is fitting, as Raylan and Boyd are of two different worlds, one of the heroes and one of the outlaws. They just happen to occupy the same speck of the universe that is Harlan, and all this time spent chasing after one another has sanded off some of their original identifying features.
