For the record, audiences were wrong about this one.]]>
<![CDATA[

Roughly six hours ago, Earth was struck by a planet-wide Microsoft outage, impacting an array of major services including airlines, banks, hospitals, and emergency services. 4414b

The tech giant has since reported that the underlying issue for the outage — seemingly brought on in part from an operating system update issued by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike — has been fixed, but it doesn’t seem like everything is quite back to normal yet.

Funnily enough, this happened back in December, too, except the impact was much worse, never got fixed, and was fictional.

Indeed, ever since the outage, X has been flooding with countless s who seemed desperate to have an original thought, not realizing that just about everyone was reminded that this was exactly how Leave the World Behind — the post-apocalyptic Netflix film written and directed by Sam Esmail and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama — kicked off its plot.

Fairly received by critics but hardly winning over audiences, Leave the World Behind is Esmail at his most optimistic, which says quite a bit about Esmail more than anything. The film’s powerhouse cast includes Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, and Myha’la, and centers on a pair of families as the world descends into apocalyptic chaos after a country-wide cyberattack causes planes to fall out of the sky and Teslas to pile up the roads. As everyone tries to make sense of this mysterious enemy (or, perhaps, the lack thereof), Esmail delves into some deceptively thoughtful spectacle, ruminating on who we become when confronted with faceless disaster, and how we choose to navigate it.

Naturally, a real-life moment wherein airplanes can’t fly, banks can’t properly function, and Starbucks can’t give people their daily doses of caffeine has prompted casual Netflix viewers to panic about the jarring reality of life imitating art. With any luck, this real-life happenstance won’t mirror its fictional counterpart, but for the moment, that remains to be seen.

While we wait with bated breath to see how this unexpected event plays out, rest assured that Leave the World Behind is available to stream on Netflix.

The end times are nigh on Netflix. ]]>
<![CDATA[

It already feels like we’re living in the apocalypse, which is probably why Netflix seems hellbent on depicting the end times on film. Over the last few years, the streamer has delivered multiple movies based around the end-of-the-world, be it from an impending comet, zombie pandemic or some supernatural force that preys on the senses.

Some have enlisted casts so starry they warrant their own constellation (Don’t Look Up), while others have gone on to birth massive pop culture moments (Bird Box). Below, we’re sorting through the ten most notable end-of-the-world movies on Netflix, ranked from worst to best. The end times are nigh!

IO 2vi3a

Margaret Qualley stars as a scientist who, despite the earth’s increasing toxicity, remains on the planet to find a solution. While others have jetted off to colonize IO, one of Jupiter’s moons, she stays behind to research an earth-saving miracle and encounters a man just two days away from leaving earth. IO has a great concept that it sometimes fails to execute, but it’s a very fun watch.

The Silence 6r4k6m

Given that it was released around the same period and its plot involved sound-hunting monsters, The Silence couldn’t help but draw immediate comparisons to A Quiet Place. While it’s certainly not as good as the latter film, The Silence earns points for its deeper dive into horror conventions with a cult subplot and eerie sound design. Oh, it also stars Stanley Tucci, which is always a major plus point.

The Midnight Sky 196y3m

The end times stretch all the way to the Arctic in The Midnight Sky, a quieter apocalyptic film starring George Clooney as a researcher finding other hospitable planets. Directed by Clooney himself, the film features breathtaking visuals and a third-act twist that throws a spanner in the works.

White Noise 49ig

When a nearby chemical leak causes an airborne toxic event, Professor Jack Gladney (played by Adam Driver) must evacuate with his family in tow. Directed by Noah Baumbach and starring his wife Greta Gerwig, White Noise offers an absurdist and comedic take on the apocalypse and clear parallels to the COVID-19 pandemic. It might not have had the Oscar-worthiness some had hoped for, but it’s certainly a memorable entry into the genre.

#Alive 95x6t

If urban parkour was a sport riddled by zombies, #Alive would be the training ground. The 2020 South Korean film follows a video game live streamer trapped in his apartment when an undead apocalypse breaks out. Claustrophobic but still packed with gore, horror, and action, #Alive feels like the spiritual cousin of Train To Busan in all the best ways.

Cargo 20656y

It’s rare for a zombie film to have heart, but 2017’s Cargo delivers on all the feels as Martin Lawrence’s character searches for a home amid an undead outbreak. Fans of the genre’s more thrilling aspects will find plenty to love, too, but Cargo is at its core a film about parenthood. Who said zombies can’t be family-friendly?

Bird Box 1z1g6t

Audiences were swept up in Bird Box mania in 2018, when Netflix premiered the Sandra Bullock-starring film to widespread fanfare. Bullock stars as a woman surviving an apocalypse in which a mysterious entity compels people to suicide, battling hysterical fellow survivors and a perilous trip to a safe haven along the way. The film was watched by more than 45 million s and enjoyed the best opening week for a Netflix film in the streamer’s history.

Army of the Dead 4m513z

Following his acclaimed Dawn of the Dead remake in 2004, director Zack Snyder had much to prove upon the release of his fellow zombie movie, Army of the Dead. Thankfully, the apocalyptic movie delivered on much of its promise, with stylish set design, a totally game cast including Dave Bautista AND Yellowjackets’ Ella Purnell, and a fresh take on the genre with a heist twist.

Don’t Look Up 4rl16

Memorable for its A-list cast that includes Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and Cate Blanchett, Don’t Look Up is Netflix’s starriest apocalyptic movie. It follows two scientists who discover that an extinction-level comet is headed towards Earth, and their attempt (and failure) to alert the public to the imminent threat. Director Adam McKay has fun with the clear parallels to the climate crisis, and scored an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

Leave The World Behind 4e363f

Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke star as a married couple in Leave The World Behind, an apocalyptic thriller chronicling the onset of a mysterious blackout, environmental oddities and a civil war. The film is based on the 2020 novel of the same name, and makes fascinating commentary on society’s penchant for in-fighting when faced with a foreign threat. There’s also plenty of eerie deer symbolism, and a Friends cameo.

What else could have caused such a massive service outage across the U.S.? Lots of things, actually.]]>
<![CDATA[

Network outages have been affecting customers in the U.S. on a massive scale this morning. While AT&T reported the biggest outage, other telecom companies, including Verizon and T Mobile, have also experienced some down time in their networks. The result is tens of thousands of customers being unable to make calls, texts, or access the internet. The scale of it all has led some to question the possibility that it was an intentional cyberattack from the likes of Russia.

Whilst most of the networks have already been restored, people have been comparing the events to last year’s hit Netflix film Leave the World Behind. It probably did feel like that for a while, you never realize how dependent you are on your phone until you can’t use it anymore; in fact, maybe everything would go exactly the way it did in the movie. The internet, and other methods of communicating in the 21st century, are practically a lifeline for some people, so it would be a disaster if they went down. If someone wanted to cause panic, taking down cellular service would be the first step. That’s what people on X (formerly Twitter) have been saying, anyways.

Some think that Russia is testing nukes.

While others pointed out the convenient timing of it all. Maybe Vladimir Putin is conspiring to get Donald Trump back in office.

So was it Russia? 5k2d20

OK, let’s dial it back a bit. There’s no evidence yet to suggest Russia was responsible; while CNN reports that the White House federal agencies have been talking with AT&T to get to the bottom of the outages, the truth is nobody knows yet. We’re not ruling out the possibility that Russia was involved, but let’s wait until something’s confirmed before we start panicking and looting (not that anyone has started yet).

National Security spokesperson John Kirby reported that the FBI were looking into the issue to get answers. Whilst the FBI don’t usually get involved with service outages, it’s probably better to be safe than sorry, and do a thorough investigation. Again, this doesn’t mean anything yet.

Could there be other reasons? 67v1z

A network going down isn’t exactly breaking news, minor outages in certain areas happen all the time. Telecom companies maintain that they usually happen for mundane reasons, such as software misconfigurations, and sometimes even construction work damaging fiber optic cables. While there are still thousands without service, AT&T claims that around 75% has been restored so far. Hopefully the rest of the network is restored soon, and we don’t end up like Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke in that Netflix movie.

Time to put on our film analysis caps.]]>
<![CDATA[

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a film on Netflix make good use of visual storytelling to convey its themes, but Leave the World Behind is a great example of how to do it well, in fact many are saying it’s one of the best films on Netflix at the moment.

Right from the get-go, as we’re shown the sun rising over the world and then the city, something about it just feels eerie — it seems too quiet when there should be that morning hustle and bustle. The film is full of moments like this, but one thing in particular that’s leaving fans stumped are the deer. Obviously they mean something, but what were the filmmakers trying to tell us by putting them in the movie?

The deer are important, they appear in the original book, and they appear in the film too — in fact, you can spot them in that glitchy, animated opening credits sequence. However, the first proper sighting of the deer happens just after Amanda (Julia Roberts), Clay (Ethan Hawke), and their children narrowly avoid being flattened by an oil tanker. Back at the house, Amanda spots a deer and its fawn, Clay notes that it’s supposed to be a good omen. It’s almost funny how wrong this statement turns out to be.

Subverting expectations 3e3b52

Whilst deer are usually portrayed as peaceful creatures, the way they are presented in Leave the World Behind flips that friendly image. This was completely intentional, as Sam Esmail, the film’s director, revealed to Tudum.

“To turn that sweet image into now this sort of ominous, menacing, almost warning — I thought was really interesting. […] We always tried to take the things that we never really considered a threat and then turn it around on them.”

As things begin to spiral out of control, the deer grow in numbers, completely surrounding the house and the family. Something that was cute and considered a good omen at first now becomes horrifying. The deer represent a shift; as our characters’ lives are flipped upside down, so too are our perceptions of nature, the world, and humanity.

The end of society 605oa

The story provides commentary on humanity’s over-reliance on technology. It is technology (or its failure) that ultimately brings about the end of society in this film. Over time, the deer become less timid and more aggressive, whilst the human characters become more and more helpless, and this definitely reinforces the idea that society is collapsing and nature is taking over.

At the end of the day, movies are art, and as with all pieces of art, it’s kind of up to individual interpretation. We know what the director was trying to say with the deer, and we can link this to the film’s themes surrounding technology and society, but there’s always more to say, or another way to look at it.

Julia Roberts’ newest venture takes real-life anxieties and throws them into impossible situations. Based on the book, Leave the World Behind, the Netflix film finds a way to make the potential for cyber attacks even more terrifying.

Roberts plays Amanda Sanford, a mother intent on getting her family on vacation. She convinces her husband, Clay (Ethan Hawke), and their two children to head to a vacation home for some rest and relaxation. But after settling in, the world is thrown into jeopardy as a series of cyber attacks threaten their way of life. Things get even more complicated when a family arrives, claiming to own the house.

G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) is a New York financial advisor who has a hunch that the city-wide blackout portended dire circumstances. He arrives on the doorstep with his daughter Ruth (Myha’la), and they are not greeted warmly. Amanda doubts that they own the house, considering their arrival in the middle of the night. The tensions surrounding the families are high, improved upon by Barack Obama’s helpful character notes for the film. Even more unexpected is the way America’s most beloved sitcom made an imprint on the film.

How is Friends involved with Leave the World Behind? 4r4w27

A cultural touchstone that can touch any generation, Friends continues to resonate. The sitcom was part of NBC’s Must See TV and catapulted its stars to monumental success. Ultimately earning each actor a million dollars per episode, Friends lasted for a decade of laughs, love, and heartache. Though the series ended in 2004, it is quite a pivotal point in Leave the World Behind. Esmail explained to USA Today how including the series came to be.

“The whole ‘Friends’ thing was a just ing remark, really, in (Rumaan Alam’s) book, so we turned it into a storyline.”

The first indication that something is amiss in the vacation home — and all around the world — is the failure of the WiFi. This is particularly devastating for young daughter, Rose (Farrah Mackenzie), who is on the series finale of Friends. When the episode aired in real-time, virtually no one missed it, and because of the glitchy Wi-Fi, Rose could not see the emotional send-off that was 10 years in the making. Her older brother, Archie (Charlie Evans) is less than sympathetic to Rose’s plight, but Esmail explains where Rose is coming from emotionally.

“I felt that Rose’s attachment to ‘Friends’ was very human and comforting. In a way, that is the heartbeat of the film: Rose’s yearning to escape to that comfort zone.”

There is even another connection to Friends that some might not think about initially. At the height of her fame, Roberts guest starred in one season 2 episode opposite her boyfriend at the time. The relationship between her and Matthew Perry didn’t last, but the two always spoke highly of each other. Esmail’s attempt to offer some levity in such a dark film was ultimately quite effective.

The two-term president was instrumental in telling this 'cautionary tale about mistrust.']]>
<![CDATA[

The Creator of USA’s innovative Mr. Robot, Sam Esmail, has the habit of creating terror out of modern society. The man who was tasked with rebooting the sci-fi classic, Battlestar Galactica, has done it again with the Netflix film, Leave the World Behind, but this time with the aid of former U.S. president, Barack Obama.

Based on the Rumaan Alam book of the same name, the film stars Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke in the wrong place at the wrong time. Intent on getting her family on a vacation, Amanda (Roberts) packs their bags and heads to a vacation house she booked. But amid catastrophic cyberattacks that shut down the world, a family arrives, claiming to own the property. The Sandford family treats Ruth (Myha’la) and G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) with suspicion, as there is no way to these claims.

Stuck together at the end of the world, Leave the World Behind takes familiar dystopian themes of lies and mistrust with a sci-fi spin. These elements alone are a recipe for a captivating film, but someone unexpected gives an additional level of realism to the project.

How was Obama involved in Leave the World Behind? 16p5d

After retiring from his duties as a two-term president, Barack Obama has lent his talents to the entertainment industry. He and Michelle Obama have a production company, Higher Ground Productions, that was involved with the film. Esmail shared with USA Today that the former president gave him notes for his new film regarding what reality would look like at the end of the world.

“Here we have one of the most brilliant minds on the planet making sure we kept focusing on this cautionary tale about mistrust. He’s a movie lover and a fan of the book, so what he really wanted to emphasize with me was hitting on this point about how lack of empathy that can happen in a crisis and what that means for us all.”

He used his experience in the Oval Office to dissuade Esmail from using elements that were not as realistic in an end-of-the-world scenario. But as a movie buff himself, his notes on characters were instrumental. President Obama had a unique perspective about how high-intensity situations could turn people against each other. As one of the most powerful people in the United States, he naturally would have experience with high-pressure situations and how that would affect characters emotionally.

In this movie specifically, this comes in handy. Tensions rise between the two families who are forced to cohabitate with each other as well as their prejudices. Amanda particularly shows a vicious racist side, disbelieving that a family of color could own such an impressive estate. A social commentary for the current era, Leave the World Behind should not be missed when it premieres on Netflix.

The 1990s: A bygone era of mom jeans, hypercolor shirts, and only 151 Pokémon. The decade came roaring back to television screens recently when Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon reunited for Netflix’s psychological apocalyptic freakout, Leave the World Behind.

You can’t reunite without uniting in the first place, leading many viewers to ask themselves which project Bacon and Roberts had teamed up for in the ‘90s. It’s easy to lose track of these things. The whole decade was a blur. We were all out of our minds on Surge Cola and Sprinklin’s Yogurt. Don’t worry, boo. We’ve got you.

Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon’s Flatliners: A severe concussion of a movie 2s6o63

Flatliners is one of those movies that, if you don’t to watch it every couple of years, starts to feel like a weird dream you had while you were getting your wisdom teeth out. Directed by Joel “Sorry about Batman and Robin Schumacher and — spitting in the face of the odds — not based on a short story by Stephen King, it stars both Bacon and Roberts, alongside Kiefer Sutherland. Other, more surreal credits include “young Oliver Platt” and “Billy Baldwin in an actual movie.”

The story follows a group of medical students who get up to some malarkey, deciding to try to find out what’s on the other side of mortality by stopping their hearts, then resuscitating one another at the last possible second. This sort of behavior doesn’t just confirm that kids were stupid before TikTok challenges. It also, as tends to happen in horror movies about science, makes some magic happen. The fresh-faced thrill seekers soon find themselves bringing something back with them from the other side. Everyone gets a bad case of the jeeblies. Jeeblies, all around.

Flatliners didn’t set the box office on fire when it hit theaters in 1990. On a budget of $26 million, it pulled in a little over $61 million. Similarly, despite finding some cult appreciation later down the road, it was met with less than stunning reviews, splitting critics on Rotten Tomatoes directly down the middle with a 50% approval rating. It’s about as obscure as a film can be while still featuring some of the biggest stars of its day.

Still, if there’s one thing that studios have agreed on over the last 20 years, it’s that you don’t need an audience to recognize your property to try and cash in on audience recognition. In 2017, Elliot Page and Diego Luna starred in a soft remake/sequel to Flatliners, also called Flatliners. The film was shot for less than the original ($19 million) and made less at the box office ($45 million). Kiefer Sutherland returned. Roberts and Bacon were unavailable. It’s unclear whether anyone bothered to try to get Billy Baldwin on the horn.

I'd be praying for the end of the world in an AirBnB like this one. ]]>

Leave the World Behind might not be a typical apocalyptic thriller, but the slow-burn drama has undeniable charm.

Its late October of 2023 premier prevented the cast from doing publicity rounds as they stood in solidarity with the Writers’ Strike of ’23. Despite its lackluster premiere, Leave the World Behind has been well received, with critics praising the acting despite the somewhat leisurely pace of the apocalyptic thriller. But, more importantly, People are wondering just where that gorgeous house is, and how they can experience those verdant green woods for themselves.

Where was Leave the World Behind filmed 5m4n26

Leave the World Behind follows Amanda (Julia Roberts) and Clay Sandford (Ethan Hawke) as they take an impromptu trip to a secluded AirBnB just off the coast of Long Island with their two teens. What starts as a leisurely holiday turns into a blackout as the family realizes the world around them seems to be crumbling. With no technology left, the family must partner with the home’s true owner, G. H. Scott (Mahershala Ali), and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la Herrold) to survive.

Most of the film is shot exactly where it is set. All filming took place in New York State, specifically around Westchester County in May 2022. ing scenes were captured around the area, from Pleasantville, Lewisboro, and a nearby hamlet called Katonah, nestled in the town of Bedford, New York. The Riverhead Local newspaper claims that the Riverhead Township served as the primary location for the film’s remote exterior shots.

The house itself, a 5,000-square-foot modern farmhouse, can be found in Old Westbury. The recently renovated home was designed by John Winberry, a partner at the 12-person-strong Long Island City architecture firm. The house, affectionately called the Open Corner, is designed to capture sunlight every hour of the day, leading to some spectacular open-concept looks that are perfect for the end of the world. Those surreal shots of Julia Roberts wandering through sunlight are all real, folks, no Post Processing needed.

screengrab via Netflix

The location manager, Mara Alcaly, told Curbed that she chose the home for the dichotomy it would play against the apocalypse. As chaos unfolds, the home’s manicured lines and stark white exterior put it at odds with the crumbling world. All the while, the open design of the building forces the viewer to stay keenly aware of the outside world.

Outside of home, the lush forest vistas came from FDR State Park just outside of Yorktown Heights, New York. The park has served as a filming location for a plethora of films and film-adjacent events. You might recognize the well-manicured forest from The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind or the “Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience“ in 2022.

Most of the gorgeous waterfront views weren’t achievable without Long Island in the frame, so the crew outsourced those vistas to nearby Smithtown, Riverhead, and Lloyd Harbor.

The apocalyptic thriller has earned positive reviews from critics ]]>
<![CDATA[

It’s been a great year for the movies, with Barbenheimer reigniting the cinema-going experience and a range of late-2023 films like Saltburn and The Holdovers reinstalling hope for original titles with an indie flair. Adding to that list is Leave the World Behind, which could have easily been another forgettable apocalyptic flick but has instead received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Directed by Sam Esmail of Mr. Robot fame, Leave the World Behind follows a vacationing family in the midst of a mysterious cyber attack, with a starry cast that includes Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Kevin Bacon. The film had its worldwide premiere at AFI Fest on October 25, 2023, where it debuted alongside fellow buzzy titles like the Bradley Cooper-starring Maestro.

So as the year wraps up and we collate our holiday watchlists outside of the regular Christmas programming (it’s officially Love Actually season), where can we watch Julia Roberts’ Leave the World Behind?

Leave the World Behind was shown in select theatres internationally from November 22, 2023 but that theatrical run has since ended. Now, the film will be available to stream worldwide on Netflix from December 8, 2023. Netflix scored the distribution rights to Leave the World Behind all the way back in 2020, beating out the likes of Apple and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The first official trailer for Leave the World Behind was released in November, with a final trailer arriving on December 6, 2023. The psychological thriller is based on the 2020 novel of the same name written by Rumaan Alam, which was met with acclaim by critics and was nominated for the National Book Award. It is produced by the Obama-founded Higher Ground, with Barrack himself even having a hand in contributing to the script.

Leave the World Behind adds to an impressive string of releases distributed by Netflix in 2023, with the streamer elsewhere finding success with David Fincher’s The Killer, Todd Haynes’ May December starring Natalie Portman, and Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Netflix might have a shot at an Academy Award in 2023, too, with the streamer’s Bradley Cooper-director biopic, Maestro, earning Oscar buzz for the actor and his co-star, Carey Mulligan.

In any case, most audiences will have to wait to make their own mind up about Leave the World Behind, which hits Netflix screens on December 8, 2023.

The times, they are not a-changin'.]]>

It’s becoming a bit of a running gag that Netflix’s highest-profile projects never tend to find much favor among critics regardless of the talent assembled on either side of the camera, but the more often you hear a joke, the less funny it becomes. Despite being utterly stacked on all fronts, Leave the World Behind is shaping up to be the latest disappointment from the streaming service.

Of course, based entirely on its easily-marketable premise and ridiculously talented roster of talent, the literary adaptation is going to be a huge hit when it premieres on Nov. 22. And yet, the first wave of reactions have hardly been enthusiastic, which isn’t even a surprise at this stage when Netflix more often than not fails to maximize the riches at its disposal from both a budgetary and performative stance.

Let’s not forget that we’re talking about an apocalyptic thriller written and directed by Golden Globe-winning Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, with two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali and one-time Oscar victor Julia Roberts ed by four-time nominee Ethan Hawke and Kevin Bacon, never mind a certain Barack Obama serving as a producer.

The story finds a family vacation on Long Island being rudely interrupted by a pair of strangers carrying ominous warnings of a mysterious blackout, plunging the makeshift unit into a crisis as the world begins to look as though it’s crumbling all around them.

In any other hands, you’d expect Leave the World Behind to score rave reactions from all corners, but the irony is that nobody should be surprised in the slightest that its status as a Netflix original means there was always a high chance it would underwhelm.

Not something that happens every day.]]>

On the surface, an apocalyptic thriller directed by the mastermind behind the acclaimed Mr. Robot that boasts Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Kevin Bacon, and Ethan Hawke among its ensemble sounds like it’s got the potential to win anybody over, but Barack Obama still decided to weigh in with his two cents when he offered Sam Esmail his thoughts on early drafts of the script for Leave the World Behind.

Netflix’s literary adaptation is partly produced by Higher Ground, the company founded by the Obamas that has a development deal in place with the streaming service, and he’s also publicly declared himself a fan of Rumaan Alam’s novel on which the movie is based.

Understandably, though, Esmail itted to Vanity Fair that having a former incumbent of the White House chime in with potential notes and revisions on a screenplay you’ve written is a daunting experience you’re highly unlikely to see happen twice.

“In the original drafts of the script, I definitely pushed things a lot farther than they were in the film, and President Obama, having the experience he does have, was able to ground me a little bit on how things might unfold in reality. I am writing what I think is fiction, for the most part, I’m trying to keep it as true to life as possible, but I’m exaggerating and dramatizing.

And to hear an ex-president say you’re off by a few details…I thought I was off by a lot! The fact that he said that scared the f*ck out of me. He had a lot notes about the characters and the empathy we would have for them. I have to say he is a big movie lover, and he wasn’t just giving notes about things that were from his background. He was giving notes as a fan of the book, and he wanted to see a really good film.”

Leave the World Behind follows a family vacationing on Long Island, who have their getaway interrupted by a pair of strangers with news of a mysterious blackout. With a crisis looming on the horizon, everybody is forced to band together to try and make it through an incoming disaster. Set for release on Dec. 8, there’s a while to go yet until we find out if Obama’s suggestions proved to be worthwhile.

Get ready for some fresh and familiar franchises. ]]>
<![CDATA[

2022 was something of a banner year for Netflix original movies, as the streamer managed to deliver many of its most popular films ever over the past 12 months, from Rian Johnson’s world-conquering whodunit Glass Onion to Chris Evans/Ryan Gosling spy thriller The Gray Man. Netflix will only be looking to equal, or even top, that success in 2023, then, and this sizzle reel suggests they might just have the tools to do it.

Delighting loyal subscribers everywhere, Netflix has just offered up our first look at all of their most highly anticipated feature-length releases coming in 2023, in the form of a thrilling trailer you can check out above. As you’d expect, the name of the game appears to be both continuing on with the streamer’s proven hit franchises and generating new ones starring reliable tentpole names.

The sequels on the way include Adam Sandler/Jennifer Anniston comedy Murder Mystery 2 (March 31), Chris Hemsworth actioner Extraction 2 (June 16), and Luther: The Fallen Sun (March 10), featuring the return of Idris Elba as TV’s John Luther. Among the brand-new projects that Netflix will likely be hoping to milk for more, meanwhile, are Gal Gadot vehicle Heart of Stone (Aug. 11) and Millie Bobby Brown fantasy Damsel (Oct. 13).

Other films of note include David Fincher’s thriller The Killer (Nov. 10), starring Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton, psychological drama Leave the World Behind with Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali (Dec. 8), and Nicole Kidman/Zac Efron rom-com A Family Affair (Nov. 17).

All in all, while Netflix might be cancelling beloved TV shows left, right, and center, at least it looks like those s who stick around to stream movies will continue to be well-served in 2023.
