Tuck Pendleton (Dennis Quaid), a drunk fighter pilot, volunteers for a top-secret mission: He is to be miniaturized in a submersible pod and injected into a laboratory rabbit to prove the validity of the technology. Unable to reach the laboratory workers on radio, however, he is oblivious as the lab is attacked by gunmen employed by a rival company, eager to get their hands on the new tech. In a desperate attempt to save him, a lab technician pockets the syringe containing Tuck, escapes, and injects him into the first person he can find—Jack Putter (Martin Short), a supermarket worker who just happens to be a hypochondriac. Merriment ensues, as Putter starts to panic when Pendleton journeys into his inner ear and Putter begins hearing a voice “inside his head”.

Realizing that Putter is hardly equipped for the task of getting him back to the lab, Tuck instructs him to find Lydia (Ryan), Tuck’s ex-girlfriend and a go-getting newspaper reporter. Ryan is instantly believable in the role, with her enchanting chalk-and-cheese double act with Short and sharp banter with her newspaper editor. The centerpiece of the film’s second act is an impressive action sequence that includes Short clinging on to the flapping back door of a truck traveling at speed along a California highway, with Ryan bringing up the rear in a sports car and Quaid watching the goings-on through Short’s eyeball yet powerless to do anything about it.

More shenanigans ensue, including Jack trying to retrieve a microchip crucial to the miniaturization process by impersonating a sleazy figure called the Cowboy (played with dash by Robert Picardo almost a decade before he found fame in Star Trek: Voyager). Fresh from success opposite Steve Martin and Chevy Chase in Three Amigos! (1986), Short nails the performance, and the emotional fulcrum of the film is Jack’s gradual transformation from timid grocery clerk to an assertive, adventuresome individual.

But it’s Quaid and Ryan who steal the show. Having established that the couple have broken up early in the first act, Quaid briefly gets transferred into Lydia, and discovers that she is pregnant with his child. Lydia hurries Jack back to the lab as Tuck’s oxygen supply runs low, and he discovers he is not alone—one of the rival company’s henchmen has entered Jack’s body in his own pod, and the two duke it out in Jack’s gullet in a visually impressive action sequence. A happy ending including a the-nick-of-time rescue of Tuck, a marriage for him and Lydia, and Jack driving off into a Big Sur sunset seals Innerspace’s credentials as a goofball, feel-good comedy. Despite the excellent direction, special effects that are as impressive today as they were then, and Steven Spielberg’s name attached to the project as executive producer, a mishandled publicity campaign resulted in a modest box office performance for the film.

Innerspace is not perfect: some of the plot points are too outlandish even for a goofball comedy, and its gender politics have not aged well. (Ryan’s character spends much of the film getting hit on by various male characters.) It is also true that Ryan would find far more substantial roles coming her way in the years thereafter. But, as reviewers recognized at the time, the film’s pluses far outweigh the minuses. In this much-anticipated forthcoming movie, which dropped its trailer a few hours back and was shared on Twitter with the caption, “Meg Ryan starting in a romantic movie. Nature is healing,” Ryan will star opposite David Duchovny. The plot revolves around two ex-lovers, Willa (played by Ryan) and Bill (David Duchovny), who get stranded inside the airport after a snowstorm delays their flight.

The duo reconnects after 25 years, reflecting on their past life and comparing their present condition with the dreams they shared when they were dating. A reflection on their past romantic life also makes them ponder over the possibility of getting back together.

Ryan, who helmed and co-wrote the script, elaborated on the plot, saying that the film — albeit having a plot and thematic similarities with a quintessential rom-com movie — sees an evolution of the genre as it revolves around middle-aged people who engage in meaningful conversations and delve into their life choices in the past. Speaking to EW on this, as well as her character, she said:

“Sometimes there’s a question of: Will they be together? Will they not be together? For that reason, [What Happens Later] sort of evolves the rom-com genre just a little bit. It’s also about old people, and it’s still romantic and sexy.

My character, Willa, is a magical thinker, and David’s character, Bill, is a catastrophic thinker. These rom-coms really work when the two characters are somehow opposites and yet a rhythm of intellect and humor and dialogue and banter that sort of indicates their compatibility.”

The excitement and curiosity regarding what the movie has in store for viewers are rising. But one is free to speculate until it sees a theatrical release on Oct. 13, 2023.

The queen of the rom-com returns! Meg Ryan is set to direct and star in What Happens Later, an “evolved and nostalgic” take on the classic romantic comedy genre alongside David Duchovny.

Here is the logline according to Variety:

“What if late one snowy night you came face to face with someone from your long ago? Someone who once held your secrets, because once, long ago, that person held your heart.”

The film is based on the 2008 play “Shooting Star” by playwright Steven Dietz, who also acted as the co-screenwriter on the film. The story follows ex-lovers Willa, played by Ryan, and Bill, played by Duchovny, having a chance encounter at an airport while they are snowed in. Willa has stayed true to her independent ways, and Bill has predictably gone corporate. Over the course of the night they revisit their past and reassess their future.

The film is produced by Jonathan Duffy and Kelly Williams of Ten Acre Films, along with Kerri and Blake Elder of Rockhill Studios. The collective of producers said:

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to have the incredible teams at Bleecker Street and HanWay alongside us as we bring this special story to the screen. We believe it’s a look at life and love that audiences the world over will relate to and hunger for in these uncertain times when connection and reconciliation feel more important than ever.”

Bleecker Street has the U.S. rights to the film and eye 2023 as their release goal. CEO Andrew Karpen said:

“To be part of this team, bringing such a popular play to the big screen is a genuine privilege. We are beyond fortunate that the project is in the hands of one of the most gifted romantic comedy actors of her generation. Combined with the talent of her co-stars and producers, we are honored to be on this journey and look forward to sharing the experience with audiences next year.”

Ryan is best known for starring in a slew of hit rom-com’s during the 1990s and early 2000s, such as When Harry Met Sally…, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, French Kiss, and Hanging Up. This will be Ryan’s second outing as a director, following 2015’s Ithaca starring Sam Shephard and Alex Neustaedter.

Duchovny is best-known for his starring role in the 1990s hit show X-Files as Agent Fox Mulder, as well as playing troubled author Hank Moody in Showtime’s Californication. Most recently, Duchovny starred in the Netflix comedy film The Bubble.

Production is set to begin later this year in Arkansas.
