What's in a name, er, acronym?]]>
<![CDATA[

Over the last several years, the ever-buzzing Hollywood bubble has kept a mighty lens hovered over the SAG-AFTRA scope. 1f1k2k

Of course, this is majorly due to the 2023 strike that shook the entertainment industry for over three months and delayed a plethora of pulse-pounding projects in both film and television. And now that the 2025 SAG Awards has officially etched its name into entertainment history, SAG-AFTRA has probably popped up on your radar once again.

You’ve definitely heard the name a few times by now, that much is a given, but you might be a little fuzzy on what it stands for. We can help! After all, we’ve got this covered.

What does SAG-AFTRA mean? 5z4e26

SAG-AFTRA stands for the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Originally two separate unions for screen actors, SAG and AFTRA, the two merged into SAG-AFTRA on Mar. 30, 2012. The union represents around 160,000 as of writing, including actors, dancers, news anchors, voice-over artists, and more.

The union has gone on strike several times in its history, most recently in 2023 when SAG-AFTRA failed to reach a deal with Hollywood studios represented by the AMPTP, or the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (I saved you a search). The strike was the longest one in the union’s history, beating out a 95-day SAG strike in 1980 (via Variety).

In addition to negotiating contracts with studios on behalf of its , SAG-AFTRA hosts the SAG Awards once a year. The awards ceremony in which vote in each category, precedes the Oscars and viewers often use the SAG awards to help them determine if their Oscars predictions will come true. If only other labor unions had such hype awards ceremonies.

Is an Oscar comparable to a Super Bowl ring or an Olympic medal?]]>
<![CDATA[

On Sunday, Timothée Chalamet became the youngest person to win the Screen Actors Guild Award for Leading Actor, marking the occasion with a speech that generated quite the response online.

The 29-year-old accepted the accolade for his performance in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, which he described as “the honor of a lifetime.” Chalamet confessed that he had “poured everything [he] had” into the role, which, he said, represented “five and a half years of [his] life.”

After dedicating the trophy, known as the Actor, to his mother who accompanied him to the event, and the cast of the film — Monica Barbaro, Elle Fanning, and Edward Norton — Chalamet spoke about what winning meant to him, in what he calls his “pursuit of greatness.” False humility, it’s now obvious, is not a part of this young performer’s vocabulary, nor does he seem interested in making it so.

“I know the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role and how much this means to me” he started, adding, “I can’t downplay the significance of this award, because it means the most to me.” “The truth is,” Chalamet continued, “I’m really in pursuit of greatness.”

The actor then went on to list the masters of the craft who inspired him, including Daniel Day Lewis, Marlon Brando, and Viola Davis, as well two athletes he considers role models — Michael Phelps and Michael Jordan. “I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats… I want to be up there,” he concluded, clarifying that while the SAG Award — his first major recognition — doesn’t signify that he’s made it on the list, it does add “a little more fuel” to that journey.

The brutal honesty and eagerness rubbed some the wrong way. Chalamet was accused of treating acting like a sport or a competition, with the attitude getting labeled as “gross.” Although nearly everyone in the industry wants to win an award just as much as, if not more than Chalamet, they’re meant to treat the silverware as the cherry on top of the proverbial cake. The cake being the craft of acting and the chance to further it by lending their talents to worthwhile projects.

One of the most prominent dissenting voices was Grace Randolph’s. The popular film critic and commentator felt that the speech was “inappropriate.” “Everyone in the entire room feels the same way, including the people who just lost in his category,” she explained, presumably referencing the implication that by wanting to be “one of the greats” then Chalamet wants to be better than most, including some in the room listening to his speech. She went on to call the speech “extremely insensitive” for “[making] it seem like maybe those other actors just aren’t working hard enough.”

Of course, Chalamet didn’t actually say any of those things, but it’s understandable that some would feel that he was implying them. The overwhelming majority, however, applauded the actor’s ambition, and especially his bluntness about it — a trait that is scarce in Hollywood.

“Timmy talks like he’s chasing a ring. GOAT mentality. We have no choice but to stan,” said one fan on X. “You really don’t hear people speak it out loud how much they want to be great and the pursuit of that greatness. Inspiring stuff,” added another.

At 29, Chalamet has been nominated for two Oscars, four BAFTAs, four Golden Globes, and seven SAG Awards. He’s been a part of seven Best Picture nominees at the Academy Awards, playing the lead in four of them. This year, he’s the face of two, A Complete Unknown and Dune: Part Two. If he wins the Best Actor award, he’ll break the record for youngest winner, currently held by his biggest competitor — Adrien Brody. The Academy Awards air Sunday, Mar. 2 on ABC.

The 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards has officially come to a close, which means the whispers and rumblings continue to heat up as we draw closer and closer to the Oscars.

The award show saw Timothée Chalamet deliver a heartfelt speech about leaving a long-lasting legacy of greatness as he accepted the SAG for his portrayal as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, with Oscars buzz immediately surrounding him and others in the Best Actor category. Demi Moore also won in her respective category for The Substance, while Kieran Culkin nabbed a ing role SAG statue and Colin Farrell stole our hearts over within the television landscape. Oh, and let’s not forget Shōgun unsurprisingly dominating, with Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai both taking home gold.

And now that the ceremony has ended, it is the perfect time to learn more about what we just watched. To start, who exactly gets to vote for these immensely talented people?

How are SAG Awards decided? 2f4q1c

Jane Fonda accepts Lifetime Achievement Award at SAG Awards

As alluded to by Oppenheimer‘s Cillian Murphy in his 2024 acceptance speech for the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role award, anyone who has full union hip in SAG-AFTRA may cast their votes for the SAG Awards. In other words, the SAG Awards is a ceremony where actors honor actors.

To break it down even further, the nominees are decided by a randomly selected committee numbering 4,200 union (2,100 for television and 2,100 for film) each year. These nominees can then, of course, be voted for by the SAG-AFTRA union , and whoever gets the most votes in their category wins the award.

Okay, so maybe that last bit was a given, but there’s nothing wrong with having all your bases covered. And we do, in fact, got ’em covered.

Unimaginative Republicans revive tired ‘Hanoi Jane’ insult in feeble pushback to Jane Fonda’s SAG speech 575sd https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/politics/unimaginative-republicans-revive-tired-hanoi-jane-insult-in-feeble-pushback-to-jane-fondas-sag-speech/ https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/politics/unimaginative-republicans-revive-tired-hanoi-jane-insult-in-feeble-pushback-to-jane-fondas-sag-speech/#respond <![CDATA[Jordan Collins]]> Mon, 24 Feb 2025 17:27:47 +0000 <![CDATA[News]]> <![CDATA[Politics]]> <![CDATA[Jane Fonda]]> <![CDATA[Republican Party]]> <![CDATA[SAG Awards]]> https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/?p=1836715 <![CDATA[
Jane Fonda made a speech on why empathy is a good thing and somehow Republicans have a problem with it.]]>
<![CDATA[

Jane Fonda has once again upset the “American patriots,” this time with her appearance at the SAG awards. The actress has been called everything under the sun, including an “anti-American communist,” a “traitor,” and of course, “Hanoi Jane,” all in a vain attempt at bullying her for speaking out against the current U.S. government.

The veteran actor was given a Lifetime Achievement Award recognizing her remarkable contributions throughout her career at the Screen Actors Guild ceremony on Sunday. Fonda gave a moving acceptance speech while also addressing the current political climate of the U.S. As you can imagine, this didn’t go over well with a lot of Republicans. Fonda focused on empathy and spoke about what being “woke” really meant during her speech while throwing shade at those in power.

“Make no mistake, empathy is not weak or ‘woke’ – and by the way, ‘woke’ just means you give a damn about other people… A whole lot of people are going to be really hurt by what is happening, what is coming our way.”

Of course, Republicans on X responded with all kinds of immature and frankly outdated insults because not only do they lack empathy, they also lack imagination.

The “Hanoi Jane” epithet came up frequently.

All this really served to do was prove exactly what Fonda was saying. Empathy and unity are what the country needs right now, but somehow the very thought of this has prompted some very hateful people to start hurling insults at the 87-year-old. Not that someone like Jane Fonda would probably even care about a bunch of nobodies trash-talking her online, after all, the best they could come up with was “Hanoi Jane,” an insult from over 50 years ago.

What is the origin of the “Hanoi Jane” insult? 2o1x6p

Fonda has always been a political activist. Ever since she’s had a platform, she’s used it to speak out against war, injustice, and the government in general. She gained notoriety with many during the 1970s, when she began loudly protesting against the Vietnam War. She ed the FTA show in 1971, which was an anti-Vietnam war road show.

The following year, Fonda travelled to North Vietnam and appeared on numerous radio programs decrying the U.S. military policies in the country. During that trip she was also photographed sitting on an anti-aircraft gun in Hanoi. All of this earned her a great deal of outrage back in the U.S., with lawmakers calling her actions treasonous and giving her the nickname “Hanoi Jane.”

In the years since the Vietnam War, it’s become pretty clear that the foreign policy of the U.S. at that time was a mistake. Fonda wasn’t the only one at the time to see it that way, but she was certainly one of the loudest. To bring back the Hanoi Jane label in 2025 is ridiculous, but it just goes to show how little thought goes into insults from the MAGA crowd. The best ammunition they have against Fonda is a name from over fifty years ago.

The Hollywood legend received a standing ovation as she took to the SAG Awards stage. ]]>

Jane Fonda has delivered a rousing speech about supposed wokeness while accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards

The actress was honored at the star-studded event for her 65-year career, which includes credits like Barbarella, Grace and Frankie, and 9 to 5, among many others. Taking to the stage, Fonda addressed the current political climate in the U.S., and urged Hollywood to “successfully resist” the Donald Trump-induced wave by relying on a “community of unions.” The 87-year-old coalesced her thoughts around the profession of acting, the aim of which she said was to “create… empathy.”

“What we, actors, create is empathy. Our job is to understand another human being so profoundly that we can touch their souls,” Fonda said. It was then that she delivered the mic drop moment of her speech, telling the crowd that “empathy is not weak or ‘woke,’” and reminding them that “woke just means you give a damn about other people.” The zinger was met with rapturous applause from the audience, and many social media s likewise revelled in Fonda’s roaring declaration.

Elsewhere in the speech, Fonda appeared to make reference to many of Trump’s policies, addressing everything from his attacks on DEI hires, his federal job cuts, and his attack on woke culture. “A whole lot of people are going to be really hurt by what is happening,” she said. “Even if they’re of a different political persuasion, we need to not judge but listen from our hearts…” Then, Fonda issued a rallying call for Hollywood, reminding them that the current political climate is “not a rehearsal” and urging them to “be brave” in their resistance.

“We must not isolate, we must stay in community, we must help the vulnerable and find ways to project an inspiring vision of the future,” she said. “One that is beckoning and welcoming.” Of course, Fonda’s views are hardly surprising, since she campaigned vehemently for Kamala Harris during the presidential race and has shown no qualms in expressing her thoughts on the current president. Last August, for example, she rightfully predicted that a second Trump presidency would be a “total disaster” — and yet here we all are.

Fonda’s speech was one of multiple notable moments for the glitzy event, which was hosted by Kristen Bell at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles. In what was his first win along the awards circuit, Timothée Chalamet took home the trophy for Best Actor for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, while Demi Moore took him the corresponding award for The Substance.

For its part, papal drama Conclave received the night’s biggest award, taking home the win for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture over fellow nominees Wicked, Anora and Emilia Pérez. The SAG Awards ceremony is the final major awards show before the Academy Awards, which this year take place on March 3.

The 2025 Screen Guild Actors Awards nominations were announced on Jan. 8, 2025, and while we’re all cheering about Wicked getting nominated for five awards, I want to talk about one particularly compelling category.

Not one, not two, not three but five amazing actresses were nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. That’s Jean Smart for playing wise Deborah Vance on Hacks, Liza Colón-Zayas and Ayo Edebiri for their clever foodie The Bear characters, Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary, and Kristen Bell (who is also hosting!) for starring alongside the extremely attractive Adam Brody in Nobody Wants This (aka one of my favorite shows of 2024).

Come on! How is anyone supposed to pick just one winner? Let’s break down how incredible these actresses are when it comes to portraying their layered characters. Smart is almost too perfect as an older comedian who has to deal with sexism and ageism in Hollywood. Colón-Zayas stole my heart even more in The Bear season 3, episode 6, “Napkins,” when fans learned about the dark time when she was unemployed and finally found work and family at The Beef. And Edebiri has been knocking it out of the park in every single episode as the vulnerable and smart Sydney, who tries to find her voice while dealing with Carmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) ego and issues (sorry but it’s true).

Brunson not only plays Janine Teagues, one of the best teachers on TV, but she also created Abbott Elementary and is therefore the reason why one of the smartest and loveliest sitcoms exists. Finally, there’s Bell, who lends her pitch-perfect comedic timing to Nobody Wants This as a podcaster who has never opened herself up to true love… until now. But, you know, Brody’s adorable face (and that beard) would make anyone fall in love, so who can blame her?

Every time I try to pick which TV comedy star should win, I get even more frustrated that five awards can’t be handed out. These stars aren’t only skilled actors who have honed their craft for years but good people, too. For example, Brunson has such a kind-hearted approach to making Abbott Elementary and thinks about the people who work on the show as well as the storylines. She told Elle Magazine, “I’m responsible for the employment of many, many people.” She also mentioned “the importance of continuing to open doors for newcomers, who have more room and freedom because of the work that was put in by the people before them.”

If I had to guess, my money would be on Brunson, Edebiri, or Colón-Zayas winning the SAG. Abbott Elementary and The Bear are the two most popular sitcoms in the category, and as much as I loved watching Bell in Nobody Wants This, her performance wasn’t quite as complex as the others’. Sure, one could possibly argue that The Bear has been an awards show darling for far too long and that other shows and actors need to be recognized. But when a show is that wonderful, can anyone really argue with all the accolades?

All I can say is I’m glad I’m not a SAG voter because I would petition the people in charge to let five incredible actresses take home the trophy. I’m almost too excited to watch Bell host the SAG Awards on Feb. 23, 2025 and see who is victorious.

The Oscars are here yet again, the biggest film industry awards ceremony of the year, and it will be airing on TV in just a few days. But will the Academy Awards be available to watch via Hulu?

We’ve had a truly great year for entertainment, cinema is well and truly back with last year giving us Oppenheimer, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and so much more. We’ve already seen big wins for the many talented people who work on these films at award ceremonies earlier this year such as the Golden Globes, the SAG awards and the Baftas. But now we’re closing out the awards season with a bang (or a slap) and this year’s Oscars certainly won’t be one to miss.

Will the Oscars be available to watch on Hulu? 6as3

The Academy Awards will be available to watch live via Hulu but not on the basic package. The official page for the Oscars says that you can watch the ceremony with a Hulu live TV plan. These plans start from $76.99 a month although they may offer a free trial. It gives subscribers access to Hulu and Disney plus content as well as live TV and ESPN plus.

If you don’t have Hulu live TV then you should definitely check the Oscars website to see where else you may be able to catch the show on Sunday. There are plenty of other streaming services and places online that you may be able to view the awards from.

SAG-AFTRA has been the topic of a lot of news in the past year. Whether it’s the strike that lasted from mid-summer into late fall, or the SAG Awards being the talk of the internet, many people who may have never given the union a second thought are probably finding themselves with questions.

How do you SAG? 17276

Actors are eligible to the union when they perform under SAG-AFTRA, SAG, or AFTRA employment or under an d performer’s union, according to the SAG website. SAG employment is defined as any project that negotiates its contracts with SAG-AFTRA and is in agreement with the Union about how it will compensate its actors. Actors have to complete at least three days of background employment or one day of principal employment in a main or speaking role. If actors fall under any of those categories they can then apply for their SAG card and become a part of the union.

It’s been a big year for the Actors’ Union. SAG-AFTRA went on strike in the summer of 2023 and their Madame President Fran Drescher was at the front line of every march, and even, the picket line. The beloved The Nanny and Friends star has been president of the Screen Actors Guild since 2022 and was elected in Sept. 2021, beating out Matthew Modine for the position. Joely Fisher won the position of Secretary-Treasurer in the same year.

Variety reported that Drescher promised to bring “positivity and optimism” to the Union. At the time, her then-opponent Matthew Modine called her an accomplished person and a survivor, even commending her work as a producer, but claimed that she was not the right person to lead a Union.

The term ‘multi-hyphenate’ gets thrown around a lot in Hollywood, but perhaps no one better exemplifies that than Selena Gomez. She is a singer, songwriter, actor, child star, and the new girlfriend of Benny Blanco. Granted, that last one isn’t exactly a career achievement, but Gomez is surely within her rights to include it on her resume.

Now, as the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards have proved, Gomez is also a fashion icon. Gomez was nominated alongside her Only Murders in the Building co-stars for Outstanding Performance By an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, and while she was almost outshone by a Devil Wears Prada reunion, the singer and actress turned heads with a dazzling red carpet look. Take that, Meryl!

Selena Gomez wore an all-white, custom Atelier Versace gown to the 2024 SAG Awards. Gomez has been known to sport the iconic fashion house’s most dazzling looks, but she brought extra shimmer to the gown with decked-out sequins and silver hoop earrings. Gomez completed the monochromatic white look with matching open-toe high heels, with extra flourishes in the form of silver detailing on the dress straps and a corseted bodice.

The Versace number featured a trailing skirt that pooled behind Gomez on the red carpet, with a makeup moment that included smoky eye shadow and a tawny lip. The actress wore her hair in a slicked-back updo, completing a look that’s destined to have her invited to this year’s Met Gala. What else would we expect from someone who has perfected the art of looking her best">The Bear who collected the trophy for best television comedy ensemble. In any case, with a red carpet entrance as dazzling as hers, Gomez could hardly be considered a loser.

Outside of her superhero antics as Captain Marvel, Brie Larson has enjoyed an illustrious acting career. Since making her debut at just eight years old, Larson has starred in a slew of buzzy films and television shows, which this year brought her to the hallowed halls of the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The ceremony — which largely recognises the best acting performances of the last year — took place at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall, with Barbie and Oppenheimer leading the pack with four nominations each. Larson received a nomination, but what is her broader nomination history with the SAG Awards, and has she ever won?

Brie Larson has received two SAG Award nominations over the course of her career. The first was in 2015, when she was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in the claustrophobic thriller, Room. While it was a competitive race — populated by the likes of Cate Blanchett for Carol, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and Sarah Silverman for I Smile Back — Larson ultimately took home the win.

Room — which co-starred Jacob Tremblay and William H. Macy — marked a breakout moment for Larson, with the SAG trophy adding to her broader awards-season success. That same year, the actress won a Golden Globe, BAFTA and Academy Award for the same role in Room. Larson’s second SAG Award nomination came this year when she received a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie.

The nomination was for Larson’s performance in the Apple TV miniseries, Lessons in Chemistry, in which she portrayed a feminist cooking show host in the 1960s. Larson was nominated in the category alongside Uzo Aduba (for Painkiller) Kathryn Hahn (for Tiny Beautiful Things) and Bel Powley (for A Small Light). Ultimately, it was frontrunner Ali Wong who took home the trophy, for her role as Amy Lau in Netflix’s Beef

As for her future SAG Award aspirations, Larson has a few projects on the horizon that could spell future nominations. The actress is set to star in another, currently untitled Apple TV series as a CIA agent, and will make her sophomore effort as a director with the film Lady Business. The word is still out on whether Larson will ever take home a win for playing Carol Danvers, but we’re guessing Madame Web is perhaps the only superhero movie worthy of award-season contention (that’s a joke, obviously).

Has Margot Robbie ever won a SAG Award? 6j262a https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/celebrities/has-margot-robbie-ever-won-a-sag-award/ https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/celebrities/has-margot-robbie-ever-won-a-sag-award/#respond <![CDATA[Tom Disalvo]]> Sun, 25 Feb 2024 22:19:17 +0000 <![CDATA[Celebrities]]> <![CDATA[Movies]]> <![CDATA[Margot Robbie]]> <![CDATA[SAG Awards]]> https://wegotthiscovered.play1002.com/?p=1664495 <![CDATA[
She has won over Hollywood, but about SAG-AFTRA?]]>

By now you might’ve thought that Barbie mania has officially worn off, but as its ensemble cast descended upon the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards, it’s clear that we’re all again taking up residence in The Dreamhouse. This year’s SAG Awards have gifted us with an array of buzzy moments, from The Devil Wears Prada reunion we never knew we needed to massive wins for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

As for the other half of the Barbenheimer craze, Greta Gerwig’s take on the iconic doll received a total of four nominations, including the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Best ing Actor for Ryan Gosling’s Ken. So, how did Barbie’s lead actress and producer, Margot Robbie, fare at the SAG Awards, and what about her outstanding nomination history?

The short and unfortunate answer is no, Margot Robbie has never won a SAG Award. However, the Australian starlet is decorated with a handsome number of nominations, having received a total of six nods by the awards body since 2018. That year, Robbie was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for her role as figure skater Tonya Harding in Craig Gillespie’s biopic, I, Tonya.

While she ultimately lost out to s McDormand (who won for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Robbie had another chance at SAG glory the following year. At the 2019 SAG Awards, Robbie was nominated for Outstanding Performance in a ing Role, in recognition of her work in Mary Queen of Scots. It proved to be a competitive race, with Emily Blunt becoming the surprise winner for her role in A Quiet Place.

In 2020, Robbie was again nominated for her ing role in the FOX News exposé Bombshell. That same year, the actress was nominated alongside her co-stars in both Bombshell and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood for Best Performance by a Cast. While that brought Robbie’s 2020 SAG nomination tally to three, she, unfortunately, went home empty-handed, with Laura Dern winning the ing category for Marriage Story and Parasite collecting the trophy for best cast.

Last year, Robbie received yet another SAG nod as part of the cast for Babylon. This brings us to 2024, where Robbie was nominated for Barbie both for her lead role and alongside her co-stars in the cast category. Lily Gladstone took home the former trophy for her work in Killers of The Flower Moon, while Oppenheimer collected the win in the cast category.

What all of it points to is a truly illustrious history between Robbie and the SAG Awards, without even mentioning her other award nominations and hopeful Best Picture win at the imminent Academy Awards.
