The first look at the highly anticipated Shrek 5 debuted recently, stirring up a whirlwind of reactions from the internet. While some fans were thrilled to see their favorite ogre duo, others were less enchanted by the updated visuals.

The 30-second teaser also served as a cast announcement, reuniting fans with Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey while introducing a new character in Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona who is voiced by Zendaya. Alongside the new addition, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy are all set to reprise their roles.

Shrek 5 is the direct follow-up to Shrek Forever After, the fourth installment in the franchise, which was released back in 2010. Since then, the series has expanded with two spin-offs — Puss in Boots (2011) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) — keeping the beloved fairytale world alive. Fans have been waiting for a glimpse of the new film since it was first announced, and now that the short teaser has arrived, the reactions are pouring in, especially regarding Shrek’s different appearance.

Reactions on X varied, with some pointing out that overall, the animation “looks so off when compared to every other Shrek.” One wrote that Shrek, the first movie in the franchise released in 2001, looked better than Shrek 5. Some, however, defended the creative choice, saying that because it has been more than a decade since the last movie came out, there are bound to be some changes in the animation. Others commented that they didn’t even notice the difference apart from a bit of aging, which seems appropriate since Shrek is older in the movie.

Some fans pointed out that it’s not too late to make some changes, just like what infamously happened to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020). When the trailer for that animation first dropped in 2019, the backlash was instant. Sonic was widely criticized for having human teeth and many called him “ugly.” The design was so different from the video game character fans grew up with, and they weren’t having it. In response, the production team took the and overhauled Sonic, which delayed the film’s release. The result? A much-improved Sonic that was ultimately well-received, spawning sequels due to its success.

Sonic also ed in on the social media discussion about Shrek’s new look, posting a TikTok video on their official (@sonicmovie) and offering a few words of advice accompanied by a clip of the glow-up Sonic got after receiving comments from die-hard fans. The clip’s text read, “for any green ogres looking for advice.” In the caption, they wrote, “Take notes!” presumably in a call-out to DreamWorks, the studio behind Shrek 5. The TikTok video has been viewed more than 13 million times as of writing.

Shrek 5 was originally scheduled to be released in July 2026, but it has since been pushed back to Dec. 2026 to coincide with DreamWorks Animation’s 25th anniversary. With plenty of time before it hits theaters, the question remains: Will they take the into and change Shrek’s look just like what was done with Sonic? Or will they stand by their creative vision? Only time will tell.

The announcement of Shrek 5 last year had us guessing all the possible returning castmates, but perhaps no one could’ve predicted a newcomer in the form of Zendaya.

That’s right, the bonafide movie star and fashion icon was revealed to have ed the cast of the much anticipated sequel, with her voice heard in the role of Shrek’s daughter in the just-released teaser for Shrek 5. Said daughter is named Felicia, and she is the child of the titular ogre (voiced by Mike Meyers) and his princess-turned-ogre wife, Fiona (Cameron Diaz). In the teaser, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) is heard asking the magic mirror who is the fairest of them all. Naturally, the answer is Zendaya, albeit in young ogre form.

It marks a full-circle moment for the actress, who wrote on X in 2017 that she “watch[es] Shrek too often in my adulthood.” Resurfacing the post, Shrek’s official Instagram page (probably run out of a swamp in the Far, Far Away), reshared Zendaya’s message with the caption: “This aged well.”

While Dreamworks, the animation studio behind the sequel, is no doubt celebrating having bagged such an in-demand star, some fans are less than impressed with the teaser for Shrek 5.

Onlookers took particular umbrage with the change in animation style, which looks notably different from previous installments in the franchise. “What have they done to him?,” one questioned alongside a screenshot of Shrek’s redesigned face, with another urging Dreamworks to “just cancel the whole thing.” Elsewhere, some said the changed animation of the film “look[s] like an AI interpretation,” or otherwise just pleaded with the studio to “fix that animation.”

The more steadfast fans thought collective action — like in the case of other derided animation styles — might offer some course correction ahead of Shrek 5’s release. “Can we bully Dreamworks to change the Shrek 5 animation like we did to Paramount to change Sonic’s animation?” one fan suggested, in reference to that much-loathed trailer. Regardless of all the chatter, the fifth installment of the franchise is moving full steam ahead, with a release date set for Dec. 23, 2026.

Ahead of that, we’ve gotten few details as to what the film might entail, but we can expect some swamps, some ogres, and a whole lot of onions. We do know from the teaser that Pinocchio, voiced by Cody Cameron, might pop up, and that Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing the movie. The pair are veterans of the franchise, with Dohrn working on the second and third Shrek movies as a writer and artist and also voicing Rumpelstiltskin, and Vernon directing Shrek 2 and voicing Gingerbread Man.

Shrek 5 adds to an already plentiful list of projects for Zendaya, who is set to star in the imminent Spider-Man 4 alongside her boyfriend (or perhaps fiance?) Tom Holland, as well as Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated new film. Elsewhere, she was reportedly being eyed to the cast of the 9 to 5 reboot alongside Ariana Grande and Sydney Sweeney. She’s also on board for season three of Euphoria, but that’s about as far off as the Far, Far Away.

The real-life animal that inspired Eddie Murphy’s iconic Shrek character has said “that’ll do,” with news breaking that the miniature donkey has tragically ed away.

Seriously, we’re only a week into 2025 and my bingo card is already brimming with unexpected moments (Vin Diesel calling out Dwayne Johnson?), but the death of the animal who delivered one of animation’s most memorable characters is an entry I’d rather not fill-in. At this point, the only a** in this story is 2025, not Perry the donkey, who died at the age of 30 on Jan. 2. It marks the end of a storied career for the animal (no-doubt the envy of his barnyard companions), who was born in 1994 and shot to fame for his connection to DreamWorks’ Oscar-winning animation.

The story goes that animators working on Shrek modelled Donkey after Perry, who was five years old at the time and was paid an almost criminal $75 for his contribution (I’m guessing he spent it on hay). In 2021, Perry’s lead handler, Jenny Kiratli, told SFGate that it was “amazing how much of our donkey is in Donkey, [like] the way he flips his head when he’s mad at Shrek and the way he trots.” Kiratli added that it was “evident if you know Perry and watch the movie that it’s him.”

With Perry’s modelling, Donkey would go on to become the breakout star of Shrek, with Murphy’s scene-stealing voice acting appearing in its three subsequent sequels. News of Perry’s death was shared by the Barron Park Donkeys Instagram , where he arrived “as a young and feisty three-year-old” companion to another donkey, Miner 49er. The handlers said the donkey will be ed for his “beautiful soulful eyes, his sweet and gentle disposition [and] his amiable stroll,” as well as his “contributions to the movie Shrek.”

As far as donkey years go, Perry had a pretty good run, since equidae animals typically have a life expectancy of 25 to 40 years. It was later revealed that Perry had long suffered from an incurable condition called laminitis, which affects donkey hooves and which no amount of Shrek’s onions could remedy. At this rate, I half-expect to hear news that the blue tang fish that inspired Finding Nemo’s Dory has ed away, only to forget that she was even alive in the first place. In the wake of his death, Perry’s legacy will live on not just in the already released Shrek movies, but in the fifth installment currently in the works.

Last year, DreamWorks confirmed that the long-rumored sequel was in fact on the way, with Murphy on board to reprise his role alongside Mike Meyers as the titular ogre and Cameron Diaz as his wife, Fiona.  A release date for Shrek 5 has been set for July 1, 2026, with Trolls filmmaker Walt Dohrn on board to direct. The movie will arrive some 16 years after the most recent franchise entry Shrek Forever After, which premiered in 2010.

Sadly, Perry is not the only notable name we’ve already lost in 2025. In the past week alone, we’ve mourned the deaths of Aubrey Plaza’s husband, director Jeff Baena, as well as iconic Drag Race star, The Vivienne. Please, 2025, let this year’s bingo card be one of bizarre or wholesome moments, not one with an overstuffed In Memoriam.

Prequels, sequels, spin-offs, and remakes. (No, this isn’t the title of Lana Del Rey’s latest album, it’s the state of Hollywood today.)

A quick look at any cinema’s line-up or studio’s schedule will show that the majority of movies these days are, in one way or the other, attached to an already established project. And while we’re not even in 2025 yet, 2026 has also caught the sequel bug, with a promise of multiple animated sequels on the way!

Do we really need an Ice Age 6">audiences long for the simpler times, with established characters they know and love. The sentiment and nostalgia attached to already iconic projects make it easier for studios to bank on sequels, prequels, and remakes.

As the year comes to a close, studios have started putting out their schedules for future projects. While the vast majority of projects are indeed sequels or additions to franchises, there are thankfully a few original projects in the works, including: Pixar’s Elio, which will be released in June, 2025.

DreamWorks Animation will also be releasing Dog Man in 2025, based on the popular children’s comic series, and Warner Bros. Animation have an animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat. Rounding up the major animated releases is Paramount’s Aang: The Last Airbender movie which will serve as a continuation of the hit show. But, let’s face it, it’s depressing that even among them, Elio is the only actual new story being told.

The very long-awaited Shrek 5 will someday arrive. Sadly, that fateful day is a ways off yet, but we might be able to give you a rumored release window.

When Puss in Boots: The Last Wish hit theaters, it not only delivered an absolutely delightful comedic experience for all ages but also ended with a very welcoming announcement: Puss in Boots would be reuniting with old friends in the land Far Far Away. The news finally confirming the fifth sequel for the main Shrek franchise, left all of us in absolute shambles – in the best possible way. Sadly, that was the only confirmation we ever got that the new story was in the works… until today.

When is Shrek 5 coming out?

With the strikes now reaching their final hours, new release dates have been speculated and even confirmed online. According to DiscussingFilm, Shrek 5 is allegedly slated to hit the silver screen in 2025. However, it’s important to take this information with a grain of salt, as the X/Twitter provided a deleted LinkedIn profile as their source.

The tweet suggests that the announcement was the result of a mistake made by an NBC Universal employee, who listed the film for 2025 on her LinkedIn . While this initially appeared to be an accidental slip-up, eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed the change and ran with the belief that this mistake was indeed confirmation that the film would finally hit theaters in two years’ time.

Naturally, this doesn’t offer any additional information about the film. No release date, month, or even a hint at the time of year. Hopefully, now that the future is looking brighter for Hollywood, we’ll receive official confirmation of when Shrek 5 will land. This story is not ogre yet.

Picture it: Shrek’s Swamp, 2023, you and two friends living your best life in the days leading up to everyone’s favorite spooky holiday. That’s right, ogre enthusiasts, Shrek’s Swamp is inviting you to book the holiday of a lifetime with a Donkey of your very own — and if your bestie gets offended by being called the Donkey to your Shrek, well, it’s time to find a new bestie.

When Shrek first debuted in 2001, fans were unaware they were tiptoeing into a world of swampy goodness that would captivate them for decades to come. Who knew we’d all fall so completely in love with an ogre and a donkey? Spawning several sequels and spinoffs, the Shrekverse is ever-expansive, and his ogre-esque dwelling place is always ready to welcome a new inhabitant despite the signs that say otherwise.

Of course, we can’t crawl into a Shrek film, despite how much we’d all like to (and trust us, we’ve tried to imagine ways to make it happen), but someone did give die-hard fans something to look forward to as they created a real-life version of Shrek’s Swamp!

Just who is responsible for inviting us to Shrek’s once-private lair, and how on earth do you book a stay there? As usual, we’ve got you covered.

Who opened the doors to Shrek’s Swamp?

If you’re wondering who decided to open the doors to Shrek’s house, the answer might not surprise you. Donkey himself is the one who wants you to visit Shrek’s Swamp, and we’re ready to accept the invitation.

Donkey describes the experience as something right out of the Shrek film franchise: otherworldly and dream-worthy.

The fairytale-esque stay begins when you see the signs outside Shrek’s lair, and don’t fret; Donkey assures you that any Beware or warning signs are probably just a great Halloween decoration; it is spooky season, after all.

“Located in the hills of the Scottish Highlands, Shrek’s Swamp is a stumpy, secluded haven fit for a solitude-seeking ogre… and for the first time ever, a handful of his biggest fans, thanks to yours truly. I’m swamp-sitting while Shrek’s away this Halloween, and I’m absolutely delighted to invite you in for a fairytale stay. Oh, and never mind the “BEWARE” signs. They’re probably for decoration.”

Donkey does note that there’s only one opportunity for the special guests to get to book Shrek’s Swamp, and it’s only because he’s swamp-sitting while Shrek is away; so how do you make it happen?

How do you book a night (or several) to stay with Shrek and Donkey?

An Airbnb listing is now live for the stay, and you can begin booking an excursion of your own on Oct. 13, but as the listing notes, there’s only one booking date available: Oct. 27-29, and it’s for up to three guests. There are some requirements that those hoping to visit Shrek’s home must visit, some of which read as follows:

  • In order to request to book this stay, guests must have an active Airbnb profile, agreement to the Airbnb of Service and acknowledgement of the Airbnb , with a good track record on the platform.
  • The fellow traveling party must be at least 5+ years of age.
  • Guests must be able to provide a government-issued ID.
  • Guests must enter a complete message when submitting the request to book, letting the Host know, among other things, who will be ing them.
  • Guests acknowledge Airbnb may conduct a review of public records.
  • Airbnb and the Host reserve the right to reject a request to book if, in either’s discretion, it is believed the stay may have an adverse effect on Airbnb and/or the Host’s business or reputation.

It’s also important to note that booking Shrek’s Swamp isn’t a contest or competition, so those who wish to travel to his home are responsible for getting there on their own, and for those who aren’t local, there’s quite a bit of travel involved.

So, if you feel like you can make it happen, it’s essential to be online early on Oct. 13, as one fan will get to bring two of their own besties to live like Shrek for a weekend, and we certainly hope they’re willing to share a lot of pics and videos of everything from the experience of a lifetime.

In 2001, the first Shrek movie came out and gave audiences a different spin on the kind of stories Disney mined for money over the previous decades. It sparked a wave of sequels of varying quality and now, claims of a Shrek 5 are cropping up. While several see it as inevitable given it is a recognizable thing which has an audience, reality is a little bit more complicated at the moment.

The rumblings about another adventure with Mike Myers’ titular ogre first emerged in a new article published by Variety. In it, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri discusses the studio’s projects with Universal, and in between mentioning sequels to more recent franchises and some coming original projects, he says another is being talked about which, if it moved forward, might bring back the original cast, though absolutely nothing is officially agreed to as of filing this story.

“Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors.”

Meledandri does have reasons to be bullish on the prospect of the jolly(-ish) green guy coming back for more. Years ago, a script was completed for another film — though, it could end up getting thrown out if a production does start up — and Eddie Murphy has indicated he would return in seconds to play Donkey. He told Variety this in January, and Meledandri is delighted by his love.

“It’s evidence of his strong enthusiasm for a role that he so brilliantly inhabited and really created alongside the artists at DreamWorks. I found that comment to be very exciting.”

For now, those who feel Shrek is love and Shrek is life will just have to be patient and stream the originals on Peacock. Alternatively, you could also find the Shrek burlesque show (yes, this is real), which has previously toured Australia. As well, there is also the Shrek musical, which has previously been available to watch on Netflix, and is available to rent on YouTube right now.

As soon as DreamWorks announced Kung Fu Panda 4, fans on Twitter started demanding they make a sequel to another beloved franchise, Shrek

DreamWorks Animation recently announced Kung Fu Panda 4 seemingly out of nowhere, even though a series, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight was recently released on Netflix. The last film, Kung Fu Panda 3, was released back in 2016. The film will most likely see Jack Black return to the role of the Dragon Warrior Po, as he recently reprised his role in the series. However, whether or not any of the characters from the series or Kung Fu Panda 3 will return has yet to be announced.

As for Shrek, the last mainline Shrek film was Shrek Forever After, which was released 12 years ago in 2010. Sure, DreamWorks have released Puss in Boots since, with a sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish set to release this December, but it’s not the same as another film in the Mike Myers-led franchise.

One Twitter , aptly named Shrek, simply quote-tweeted the announcement with, “ok, but where is Shrek 5?”

https://twitter.com/shreketc/status/1558216586229694469?s=20&t=sy1h-OafytmUgRO0aGQ_wQ

Another fan felt betrayed that Shrek 5 was trending on Twitter without an announcement of a new film, “When Shrek 5 is trending but not because it’s been announced.”

One fan on Twitter thinks that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is probably the prototype for a new Shrek film and if that performs well at the box office, we might get a Shrek 5. Twitter Nicolas Baron said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if DreamWorks drops another surprise announcement at the beginning of next year where they set a release date for Shrek 5 if Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a box office success this December.”

Are all hopes dashed for a Shrek 5? No, not necessarily. Shrek 5 was confirmed a few years ago with the film seemingly moving from DreamWorks Animation to being made by Illumination, the company behind the Despicable Me franchise. We speculated that the COVID-19 pandemic may have halted or slowed the development of Shrek 5, seeing as it is a billion-dollar franchise, leading credence to the idea that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish might be a test.

Even if Shrek 5 is not in active development, one thing is abundantly clear: fans think that it should be.

You can watch Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight on Netflix while you wait for Kung Fu Panda 4, which is scheduled to release on March 8, 2024.

All the way back in 2001, DreamWorks Animation hit a perfect home run with Shrek. The loose adaptation of William Steig’s picture book of the same name caught the imagination of a generation of children and adults alike, and spawned a multi-billion dollar, multimedia franchise spanning 16 years and counting. The Shrek universe now comprises of four feature films, one spinoff film, six short films, two television specials, one television series, one stage musical, 12 video games, and a range of themed attractions around the world. Now, after a number of years of teasing, we finally have a solid update on the status of Shrek 5. The screenwriter of the movie, Michael McCullers (Saturday Night Live), was recently talking to The Hollywood Reporter about his current release, The Boss Baby. During that conversation, he explained that his script for Shrek 5 is complete, and the film is in development following some corporate-level re-shuffling.

Shrek 5 is being developed. I finished that script which I really, really, really love. It’s really personal to me. It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level. Reinvention was sort of called for. There’s been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point.”

It certainly was something of a surprise, back in 2014, to hear that the studio was moving ahead with Shrek 5 – given that 2010’s Shrek Forever After provided a definitive close to the established narrative arc of the series so far. Together, Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek The Third, and Shrek Forever After chart the evolution of Shrek, from grumpy, solitary ogre to contented family man – as husband of Fiona and father to ogre triplets. Universal is clearly confident that there’s more story to be told, however, as its commitment to the franchise is more than evident. Given that Shrek and Fiona have already travelled far and wide, and even had adventures in alternate realities, it begs the question as to how exactly this grand reinvention will manifest in Shrek 5. The obvious choice would be to centre a tale on the ogre triplets, as this would inject a brand new momentum into future instalments. We’ll have to wait a while longer to find out, though, since it seems the film has yet to receive a confirmed spot on the release slate. As always, be sure to watch this space for more.

Shrek-Scream Those who thought that DreamWorks had put Shrek behind them after 2010’s Shrek Forever After (which was even subtitled The Final Chapter) are sadly mistaken. According to the studio’s animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, a fifth outing for the titular grumpy ogre is in the works. In an interview with Fox Business Network, Katzenberg dropped a hint that the studio wasn’t quite done with Shrek just yet, and had simply been taking a bit of a break from the franchise.

“We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest, but I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.”

That’s all Katzenberg would say on the matter, but it should come as no shock that the studio is looking to bring the character back. After all, the franchise has grossed $2.9 billion worldwide to date. Still, this news is certainly interesting, as it appeared that DreamWorks had moved on to other properties, like How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda. Both of those films are getting sequels and there are also several other projects in the pipeline that may lead to future franchises. So, it begs the question, why revive Shrek now, four years after the story wrapped? My guess is that DreamWorks is looking to revisit their most popular and successful franchise since some of their current ones are presumably on their way out (assuming, of course, that How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda don’t get more than three films each). Of course, this is all speculation for now, and Katzenberg didn’t give us very much solid solid information to go on. However, he has sparked the conversation about a possible Shrek 5 and for those of us who miss the big green ogre, that’s definitely good news.
