The prolific actor talks to WGTC about his latest movie, projects, and his dream remake.]]>
<![CDATA[

Frank Grillo might be one of the most prolific actors in the business, but he knows a worthwhile collaborator when he sees one, with today’s release of Little Dixie marking his third feature with writer and director John Swab. 433646

Having previously teamed up for crime thrillers Body Brokers and Ida Red, the duo put another fresh coat of paint on a classic formula in Little Dixie by telling the story of Grillo’s Doc Alexander, who takes matters into his own hands to embark on a brutal rampage of revenge when he’s given a grisly ultimatum after his daughter is kidnapped by a ruthless Mexican drug cartel.

Ahead of the film’s release in select theaters, digital, and on-demand, We Got This Covered had the chance to speak to Grillo about his approach to Little Dixie, his fruitful partnership with Swab, some notable projects, and the dream remake that he’s been thinking about forever, which you can check out below.

When I spoke to John last week and asked him how you guys made sure Doc’s journey didn’t get so dark that he became irredeemable, he said about you, and I quote, “I don’t know if you’ve killed people or not. I have no idea. I wouldn’t put it past you. However, you’re one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met, but you could kill me with your bare hands.” Is that a sentiment you agree with?

Well, you know, that is kind of… I do have a bit of a duality! He kind of nailed it. I think that’s why him and I have worked together so well. He kind of understands me, and doesn’t pigeonhole me in any way, shape or form, and that’s probably the best thing anyone’s ever said about me, brother!

I also asked John why he thought so many actors were happy to work with him on so many projects, which he put down to the culture he’s created on his sets. From an actor’s point of view, and his most regular collaborator, what is it about working with John that stands out the most for you?

Brother, he’s so cocky. And he’s so prepared. Never sick. And this is a guy who’s in his early 30s. I’ve worked with a lot of directors who, very well-known ones, you know who they are. And, it’s a shitshow. So this guy writes his material, he writes fast, he directs fast, we only do one or two takes, because there’s not a lot of time or money.

And he is the captain of the ship in every way, shape, or form. So, for me, I don’t get to experience this very much; to walk on a set and trust the director implicitly. It’s just a great belief, and a great joy. And so I will work with John Swab so long as he’ll hire me.

Little Dixie
via Paramount

Is it now at the stage of when John calls, you’re 100 percent in, no questions asked?

100 percent in, and I have to tell you. I probably make 1/10th of what I would normally make on a movie. I don’t… it doesn’t matter when he calls, he knows that. And whether it’s a lead role or a ing role, I’m in.

Little Dixie is in a familiar wheelhouse for both you and John, but the story and characters are painted in different shades of grey. Is it always a conscious decision on your part to make sure you’re not repeating yourself, even if the broad strokes of the genre are familiar?

That’s a great question. And yes, that’s a big deal. If you watch the movies that we’ve done together, they’re never the same, There’s never even something that is remotely kind of alike, in the characters I play that John writes. It’s fun, and each time it’s a singular experience, you know? And listen, I’m getting to watch this young man now I know him, now he’s in his early 30s.

I’m getting to watch this young man evolve as a director in a way that… I’m a father of three, he’s almost like my fourth kid! Like, I’m so proud of what the guy’s accomplished in such a short time, and how in the town, he’s getting actors like J.K. Simmons, and Harvey Keitel, and Melissa Leo. These are all award-winning actors who want to come and play with him. So, you know, it’s great to watch this.

year 2
via The Solution Entertainment

There are two of your movies I’d love to hear your thoughts on for many reasons, even if they couldn’t be more different. Year 2, because Frank Grillo versus werewolves is so insane that it demands to be seen, and The Resurrection of Charles Manson – which is of course directed by your son Remy.

Yep, that’s my son. That’s his first movie. And it’s been a labor of… intense love and education for him! And I’m very proud of what he’s accomplished as a 26 year-old man. And Year 2 is gonna be fun. It’s kind of like a World War Z apocalyptic film.

And I think that’s going, if I’m not wrong, it’s going on 2500 screens. So that’s going to be fun to have a theatrical release on that. And then John and I have a bunch more stuff in the making, and I’m looking forward to that as well. So it should be a fun 2023!

If there’s such a thing as a Frank Grillo dream project, as in somebody offered you unlimited resources to make whatever you wanted without restrictions, what would it be and why would it be that?

You know, I would love to do a remake of my favorite movie, which is Bullitt. And I wouldn’t need that much resources. I wouldn’t, I wouldn’t need that much at all. But I would just love to remake Bullitt. You know why? The other day I was talking to a young actor about that movie, about Steve McQueen.

And he was like, 23 years old, and he had very little knowledge of who Steve McQueen was. And for me, Steve McQueen is one of the reasons why I became an actor, and that’s always been such an influential movie for me. And I would love for me to be able to get that and make it again, which will never happen, but that would be my dream.

Little Dixie is now playing in select theaters, on-demand, and digital. Be sure to check out our review of the movie here, as well as our exclusive interviews with writer/director John Swab, and star Annabeth Gish.

Kanye-West-Steve-McQueen-608x453 Rumors recently surfaced that hip-hop icon Kanye West and decorated filmmaker Steve McQueen were in talks to make a music video, and those speculations have finally been confirmed. West and the Twelve Years A Slave director had been publicly complementing each other’s work as of late, and have just debuted a nine-minute music video for the songs “All Day” and “I Feel Like That” at The Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris that was reportedly shot in a single take. The New York Times reported that the video was filmed in the Chatham Dockyard in southeast England, and “follows Mr. West through an empty warehouse as he runs, crouches, dodges, raps, rants, sweats and pants, as if being pursued by the camera or the police or in pursuit himself, until he slumps against the wall to catch his breath.” “All Day” – whose official music video can be seen above – was a West release from earlier in the year, and instead of making two separate videos, McQueen segued it into “I Feel Like That,” which will come out on the artist’s album, SWISH. Seeing as how West’s recent discography pales in comparison to his groundbreaking work from roughly a decade ago, we can only hope that the somewhat unorthodox collaboration is a sign of creative reinvigoration for the controversial artist. Tell us, are you looking forward to the official release of the music video for Kanye West‘s “All Day/I Feel Like That?” Sound off below!

steve-mcqueen The life and times of Tinseltown’s coolest cat, Steve McQueen are being developed as a feature in a collaborative production between Lake Forest Entertainment and The Exchange. The two outfits recently secured financing for the biopic, which has gained notoriety on the Hollywood circuit in recent times. Thought to be one of the hottest un-produced concepts, McQueen has caught the attention of many big name directors and A-listers in the past. According to Deadline, there’s one reason for such a vast array of attracted parties. While the project will mainly be based on Marshall Terrill’s heavily-researched biography, Steve McQueen: The Life And Legend Of A Hollywood Icon, there’s another mysterious element that has everyone’s interests piqued. Apparently, the project will combine parts of Terrill’s book along with “a unique story that is being kept under wraps about McQueen’s life that he wrote about at the time of his death in his own hand.” Two names are heading up a shortlist to steer the aptly-titled McQueen. The Immigrant director James Gray and star Jeremy Renner are at the top of that list, along with Channing Tatum and Ryan Gosling, who previously showed interest in tackling the leading role. No word on whether any of them are still in contention, but they are both certainly intriguing prospects. The Exchange’s Brian O’Shea and Jeff Bowler (head of acquisitions) will produce with Graham Kaye’s Lake Forest Entertainment. In a statement discussing the project, O’Shea iterated that the film won’t be your run-of-the-mill true life tale: “We’re figuring out how to tell the story now. It won’t be the obvious biopic.” He then went on to discuss the ‘secret’ element of the flick:

“Barbara McQueen (McQueen’s last wife) has a diary that was kept by his nurse in Mexico that was then given to the author of the book that was done on him by Marshall Terrill. Something happened in McQueen’s life that has been kept secret for a long time. We think we have a very interesting way into this story.”

What’s more interesting is that Terrill didn’t include this within his definitive tell-all, but he may have omitted it for artistic and/or legal reasons. Whatever the enigmatic tidbit may be, there will inevitably be a wealth of talent circling the Steve McQueen biopic in the coming weeks.

After Steve McQueen‘s first two directorial efforts, Hunger and then Shame, it was obvious that the man would have some pulling power when it comes to casting stars for his next project. After luring Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Dano and others to his new project 12 Years A SlaveVariety is reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch has also ed the star-studded cast. 12 Years A Slave follows “a free black man named Northup. Though he is promised a job playing violin in the circus, he ends up being drugged and dragged to Louisiana only to be sold into slavery.” Cumberbatch has signed on to play “a plantation owner who buys Chiwetel Ejiofor‘s character and is won over by his engineering skills.” The young actor has a couple of very big years ahead of him, with another season of the fantastic BBC series Sherlock in the works, as well as roles in the Star Trek sequel and Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit: There And Back Again. Being a big fan of both Cumberbatch and McQueen, this news is music to my ears and I cannot wait to see them work together. The film is set to get underway in the next month so if McQueen plans on adding any additional cast , we’ll know shortly. 12 Years A Slave stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano and Scott McNairy and will be released in 2013.

Shame is an incredibly tough film to stomach, but if you're up to it you'll find one of the most painfully honest films of 2011 and actor Michael Fassbender's strongest performance yet. ]]>
<![CDATA[

Michael Fassbender stars in Steve McQueen‘s NC-17 rated drama Shame, a story about a man and his addiction to sex. It’s not the easiest film to sit through, but it’s definitely worth it in the end. Shame is Michael Fassbender‘s most enduring performance yet and he couldn’t have done it without Steve McQueen‘s raw and revealing directing. Shame is relentless and cold, but it’s a commanding film that shows you that not everyone wants to see a mindless action flick; some people are willing to emotionally invest themselves into flawed, but real characters, with dark pasts and not so bright futures. Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a well-off man with an addiction to sex. By well-off I mean he’s in good shape, he has a good job and lives in a good apartment. He’s social and has no problem getting with the ladies, but everything he does is for sex. Sex isn’t pleasurable to him; it’s a brief moment of escapism. Having sex feeds the addiction and gives him happiness for a very short time. He has a routine and as long as he follows it strictly, nothing will happen. He won’t get better, but he won’t get worse. That all changes when his sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan) shows up uninvited and asks to stay with him. Things start to spin out of control for Brandon the second Sissy comes into the picture. His addiction is at a boiling point and she brings out the weakness in him while he does the same for her. There’s something dark buried deep down inside of Brandon and he doesn’t want to let it out. He keeps it locked up tight, while Sissy screams and shouts, letting out all of her anger. The two are complete opposites, while at the same time almost exactly the same. One is imploding while the other is exploding, but they’re both good people from a bad past. Watching the two interact is like mixing two highly combustible chemicals. It’s wild and out of control, but that’s part of why Shame is such a spectacle. Michael Fassbender is explosive as the sex addict Brandon. He’s slick and confident on the outside and severely dysfunctional and insecure on the inside. Only Fassbender could give such a disgusting character so many redeemable traits. You want to hate or disown Brandon for his nasty addiction, but Fassbender makes you care for his well-being and he makes you hope that Brandon gets better. Carey Mulligan‘s Sissy isn’t as transforming, but Mulligan does help bring out the best in Fassbender while holding her own. Sissy is damaged goods and more often than not an irritating, irresponsible individual, but Mulligan makes her feel like someone you still want to watch, despite her nagging. There’s just something about Sissy that is innocent and misguided that Mulligan pulls off so effectively. Shame just wouldn’t work without Steve McQueen behind the lens. His trademark pacing and tone is a key factor in Shame‘s success. He never holds a shot too long, but he’s not afraid to let you sit in the filth and really soak up some of the more uncomfortable stuff. McQueen finds a delicate balance and he keeps it consistent from start to finish. Shame is only his second full-length film and in my mind it’s better than Hunger. It shows his progression as a filmmaker and more importantly it shows that he’s one of the best dramatic directors working in the field today.

The 1080p transfer is remarkably sharp. Color tends to fall on the cooler side, with a lot of dark blacks and blues, but that doesn’t keep the transfer from looking sturdy and clean. There’s grain throughout the whole film, but it’s an artistic choice that helps the film’s overall style and look. Skin tones are natural. The film looks exactly like it should and it reflects the overall mood just perfectly. The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is a compelling track, full of depth and detail. There are lots of sound effects in this film and the track helps spread out the moaning and grunting evenly. It’s not going to assault your eardrums or anything, but there’s an attention to detail that’s present on this track and it’s refreshingly mixed to satisfy your hearing needs. Shame comes to Blu-Ray with a surprisingly light batch of special features. It’s an odd contrast to such a dense film, but we work with what we get. Here’s the full list:

 • Focus on Michael Fassbender (HD): Director Steve McQueen discusses his relationship with Michael Fassbender and how they managed to make Fassbender’s character completely open for the audience. Fassbender also discusses some of the film’s focus points.
 • Director Steve McQueen (HD): A brief look at how McQueen sets the tone for the film. He also discusses the central theme of addiction and overcoming that painful feeling. Fassbender chimes in with a few comments on working with McQueen on Hunger.
 • The Story of Shame (HD): Michael Fassbender, Steve McQueen and Carey Mulligan discuss the film’s story and its characters. Each one brings their own idea of what each character means to them and their ultimate goal by the end of the film. It’s great seeing both the cast and crew on such an exact same level in of ideas and story progression.
 • A Shared Vision (HD): McQueen and Fassbender shed some light on their relationship and how it formed and continued to grow since Hunger. They both discuss the character of Brandon and how each of them prepared to take him to the next level.
 • Fox Movie Channel Presents: In Character with Michael Fassbender (SD): Michael Fassbender again discusses the character of Brandon and how important it was for him to prepare for the role. He also goes over the main relationship of the film and how a back-story wasn’t needed, but was strongly implied. I like his explanation behind the reasoning of not including the back-story within the film, it’s true and rewarding.
 • DVD Copy
 • Digital Copy

Shame is a very tough film to recommend. If you’re into heavy dramas that play at the local art-house theater than you might want to check out Shame. It’s very similar to McQueen’s previous film Hunger, but at the same time I found it too be slightly better in of structuring and lasting impact. I’m not sure if you’d want to purchase the film, because it really isn’t something that you can watch every other day. If you did like the movie then I’d suggest it because it replicates the theatrical experience without a flaw and the audio track is surprisingly mixed with attention to all of the channels. The only complaint I’d like to mention is the lack of detailed special features. Every single feature is short and often-times reuses footage from the last feature. I would have really loved a lengthy featurette or an informative audio track, but they’re nowhere to be found. The package does come with a DVD and digital copy, which makes it feel more complete and worthy of a purchase. In the end it all depends on your willingness to fully indulge on such a touchy and unappetizing subject.

Shame; the NC-17 rated Steve McQueen directed and Michael Fassbender starred drama about a man with an unhealthy addiction to sex, has been announced for Blu-Ray in April. The bleak, depressing and hard to watch film also stars Carey Mulligan and James Badge Dale. Shame is no easy film to sit through and to say it’s a rewarding experience would be just wrong. The best way to describe it is to simply call it a Steve McQueen film. The director is known to tug on human emotions by way of sad and lonely characters. His previous film, Hunger, also starred Michael Fassbender and that’s no picnic either. The film made my top ten list of films of 2011, but that’s not to say it’s for everyone to enjoy. It’s for a very limited audience, an audience that can endure a film that pushes the boundaries of comfort and will give you a whole new perspective on the act of sex. Our very own Kristal Cooper had this to say about Shame in her review.

Shame is an elegant, art-tinged character study that that will hover in your psyche for a long time after you see it; whether or not that’s a good thing is up to you.

The Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack will be presented in 1080p with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. Here’s a list of confirmed special features.

 • Two Focus on Featurettes (Michael Fassbender, Director Steve McQueen)
 • Two behind-the-scenes featurettes (The Story of Shame, A Shared Vision)
 • Fox Movie Channel Presents: In Character with Michael Fassbender featurette
 • Theatrical Trailer

Shame will hit shelves on April 17th, 2012.

Shame is an elegant, art-tinged character study that that will hover in your psyche for a long time after you see it.]]>
<![CDATA[

Playing an X-Man of a very different kind, Michael Fassbender continues his year of formidable performances with a balls-out (quite literally, in many scenes) portrayal of a man who’s a raw nerve of anxiety, sadness, barely contained anger and yes, the eponymous Shame. Fassbender plays Brandon, a fastidious New York professional who lives a carefully controlled existence (made apparent by his sparsely furnished and neat-as-a-pin apartment) while at the same time suffering from sexually compulsive behaviour. He’s a sex addict to be sure, but Brandon’s affliction isn’t quite so easy to label or write-off as a simple overindulgence of carnal desires. Handsome Brandon easily charms women in bars; seduces luscious strangers on the subway with only his unflinchingly wanton gaze; surfs porn at work and then visits the men’s room to relieve his urges with joyless efficiency; and has regular unimioned encounters with prostitutes. None of which require him to peek out from behind the mask of cool detachment he’s constructed for himself. He’s so walled off from normal human relations that he’s lost the ability to connect to anyone…even though there’s nothing he wants more than to feel something for someone. When Sissy (Carey Mulligan), Brandon’s blond pixie of a sister, whose daily phone calls he’s been dodging for months shows up unannounced at his apartment, Brandon is thrown into a spiral of confused resentment. Sissy is as colourful as Brandon is grey. Where he’s distant and disionate, she’s overly affectionate and emotional. Her very presence is both an affront and a comfort to Brandon causing him to spiral further into his addictions while at the same time taking terrified baby steps toward a normal relationship with a woman at his office. It’s clear the two have a troubled relationship stemming from an undisclosed family trauma (the most we hear of it is when Sissy tearfully appeals to Brandon “We’re not bad people, we just come from a bad place”) that has caused them each to transform into battle-scarred individuals hell-bent on exorcising their demons through compulsive self-destruction. They’re both desperate for human connection but neither knows how to pursue it in a healthy way. Heck, they can barely properly reach out to one another for or kindness. Writer/Director Steve McQueen (Hunger) and his co-writer Abi Morgan have created a surprisingly lush and romantic-feeling look at the toxic loneliness of sex without genuine emotional attachment. This is a film that strives to make you believe in connection, affection and maybe even love; that not reaching out to other people leads to a barrenness of the soul. This is never more evident than in one particularly stirring scene in a Manhattan nightclub where Brandon goes to see Sissy sing. Her mournful rendition of “New York, New York” – a version that changes the song’s tone from its usual jubilant hopefulness to a sad lament of what never came to be – affects Brandon and momentarily opens a gate into the persistent pain he’s feeling. It’s a rare moment of connection between him and his sister and Fassbender pulls it off with quiet grace. In fact, Fassbender’s performance is the real strength of the film to the point that one wonders if such a bleak story would be as watchable without his magnetic charm and effortless skill at portraying Brandon as a predator you can’t help but root for. While much has been written about the film’s explicit content and opening moments in which the audience is treated to “the full Fassbender,” the fact remains that this film is a stirring and unforgiving portrait of a human being in crisis: something everyone should be able to relate to on some level. Shame is an elegant, art-tinged character study that that will hover in your psyche for a long time after you see it; whether or not that’s a good thing is up to you.

A promo poster has been released for Steve McQueen’s next film, 12 Years A Slave. It doesn’t show a whole lot but luckily we’re given the first synopsis for the film as well. 12 Years A Slave will reunite McQueen with his Shame and Hunger leading man, Michael Fassbender. The film will also star Brad Pitt but not as the leading man, that goes to Chiwetel Ejiofor, who took the role of Solomon Northup. The script written by McQueen and Three Kings writer John Ridley is based on Northup’s memoirs by the same name. Check out the legnthy synopsis and poster below. 12 Years A Slave stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt and will be in cinemas in late 2012.

“Based on a true story, 12 YEARS A SLAVE is a riveting of a free black man kidnapped from New York and sold into brutal slavery in mid-1850s Louisiana, and the inspiring story of his desperate struggle to return home to his family. SOLOMON NORTHUP (Chiwtel Ejiofor), an educated black man with a gift for music, lives with his wife and children in Saratoga, New York. One day, when his family is out of town, he is approached by two men claiming to be circus promoters. Solomon agrees to travel with them briefly, playing the fiddle while they perform. But after sharing a drink with the men, he awakens to find he has been drugged and bound and faces a horrifying reality: he is being shipped to the South as a slave. No one listens to Solomon’s claim that he has papers proving his status as a free man. Despairing, he plots his escape, only to be foiled at every turn. He is sold to WILLIAM FORD, a kindly mill owner who appreciates Solomon’s thoughtful nature. But Ford is forced to sell him to a cruel master who subjects him and other slaves to unspeakable brutality. For years, Solomon nurtures his dreams of returning home. He stashes slips of stolen paper in his fiddle and develops a natural ink with which to write a letter. But when his greatest efforts come to nothing, he realizes just how trapped he is. Even if he could write the letter without being caught, where would he send it? Whom could he trust to deliver it? And will he even survive long enough to be rescued? Refusing to abandon hope, Solomon watches helplessly as those around him succumb to violence, crushing emotional abuse and hopelessness. He realizes that he will have to take incredible risks, and depend on the most unlikely people, if he is ever to regain his freedom and be reunited with his family.”

Steve McQueen‘s Shame has officially been given an NC-17 rating by the MPAA. If the film didn’t already have enough buzz, that’s sure to do the trick. Realizing that people are talking about the pic, Fox Serachlight is ramping up the marketing and today we have both a new clip and trailer for the film. The depths of Fassbender’s performance, which won him best actor at The Venice Film Festival, are on display in both the clip and trailer, proving that he is a shoe-in for an Oscar nomination. Shame stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan and hits limited theaters on December 2nd, 2011. Check out the new trailer and clip below.

Shame tells the story of Brandon (Fassbender), a single man who is addicted to sex in any form as long as it does not involve love or intimacy. His ordered lifestyle is thrown into chaos with the arrival of his needy sister (Mulligan).”

The first trailer has been released for Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated second directional piece, Shame, starring Michael Fassbender. The film, which won Fassbender the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival, has earned rave reviews thus far and is set for a December release with its guaranteed NC-17 rating. Shame features full frontal nudity by both Fassbender and Carey Mulligan and is already building up some buzz for its graphic content. From the fantastic first trailer, we can already see how much depth Fassbender is going to bring to the role, which has him playing a self destructive sex addict. His acting looks both powerful and provocative and I can’t wait to see how the film turns out. It will also be interesting how the film does during Awards season, as the NC-17 rating will reduce its commercial appeal and may even stop it from receiving the awards that it likely deserves. Shame stars Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale and Nicole Beharie and will have a limited release on December 2nd, 2011. Check out the trailer below.

“Shame tells the story of Brandon (Michael Fassbender), a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandon’s insular life spirals out of control.”

Michael Fassbender and Steve McQueen have already created two of the most powerful and talked about films in recent memory with Hunger and Shame. Now, it seems that the two will work together again on McQueen’s next film, 12 Years A Slave. The film is a “true story is based on Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped in 1841 and sent to a slave plantation in Louisiana, which he was rescued from in 1853.” Chiwetel Ejiofor has already signed on to play Northup but it is currently unknown who Fassbender will play. Although, it is likely to be the role of a “Canadian carpenter” who helped free Northup. Personally, I have been waiting for this announcement for weeks. The two clearly have a powerful working chemistry that produces amazing films and after Fassbender stated he want to have a “Scorsese and DeNiro type” working relationship with McQueen, it is no wonder he has ed the film. The film is gearing up for an early 2012 shoot, but it isnt known if it will shoot before or after Fassbender wraps the new Jim Jarmusch film, which will co-star Mia Waikowska, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton, which is set to begin filming in January. 12 Years A Slave is eyeing a release in late 2012 or sometime in 2013.
