“Furiosa” still reigns supreme, but in war, there is no winning or losing; only struggle.]]>
<![CDATA[

When we last checked in on the Max viewership rankings front, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’s band of rebels were in the midst of fending off the latest addition to the Razzie Empire, with Night Swim taking center-stage as veteran villains Tarot and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire wreaked havoc elsewhere. 3n2f6

One week later, the threat of Night Swim still lurks at the bottom of the Top 10, while Furiosa continues to stand tall at the summit, but the battleground has nevertheless entered a brand new paradigm. Indeed, not only has Furiosa‘s oldest enemy formed its own partnership in hopes of bringing down the sandblasted, Anya Taylor-Joy-led odyssey, but the dark lord of the Razzie Empire has also returned with a vengeance, in spite of Beetlejuice‘s guerrilla efforts to promote its sequel.

Per FlixPatrol, this day of Sept. 5 has seen The Garfield Movie and The Watchers take to the top three podium, which Furiosa remains atop of. The Garfield Movie, of course, shared a theatrical release date with Furiosa in May 27, bagging $255.4 million and therefore playing some role in Furiosa‘s box office bombing. Now, it seeks to steal its streaming success, too.

But it’s The WatchersThe Garfield Movie‘s partner-in-crime in this endeavor — that Furiosa truly needs to look out for. Furiosa may be an out-and-out blockbuster cut from the same cloth as Mad Max: Fury Road, but The Watchers has a treasure trove of secret weapons of its own. Namely, it houses royal blood as a member of the Shyamalan Empire (The Watchers was the directorial debut of Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan), and it’s also a pretty bad movie, which of course means it can go toe-to-toe with the masterpieces in of viewership.

It doesn’t end there, though; The Garfield Movie‘s new faction may add a spicy personal vendetta to the streaming war, but this is a fight between good and evil first and foremost. Evil, evidently, decided that if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. As such, Madame Web has shuffled Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire out the door in order to step into the battlefield itself, where it currently bosses the chokepoint at fifth place.

But there’s one thing Madame Web didn’t consider when it decided to show its face again; this is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice weekend, and where there’s a legacy sequel, there’s a corresponding legacy classic lurking on the charts as its sequel builds up to the release date. Indeed, Beetlejuice is assisting Furiosa in butting heads with the forces of darkness at seventh place, hoping to dispatch Madame Web‘s bodyguard Tarot before sending them both back to the tar pit whence they came.

All the while, Netflix sleeper agent The Killer is playing a solo survivalist game at fourth place for some reason, while Migration and Out of Darkness attempt to snuff out what’s left of Night Swim. And the battle rages on…

Proof that cinema still needs the MCU. ]]>
<![CDATA[

You know who didn’t have a good Memorial Day weekend this year? Warner Bros. and Sony execs, that’s who, after the historically low box office haul brought in over the last weekend of May 2024. And it’s all Marvel‘s fault.

Two major releases dropped into theaters in the run-up to Memorial Day on Monday, May 27 — Furiosa, the long-awaited prequel to 2015’s mega-successful Max Max: Fury Road, and The Garfield Movie, Chris Pratt’s latest animated outing based on an iconic character after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the second highest-grossing film of 2023. WB must’ve been expecting big things from Furiosa while Sony no doubt thought they could sit back and eat Lasagna while Garfield brought in the dough.

Unfortunately, both movies spectacularly failed to even earn $100 million between them. Furiosa fell far short of expectations, opening to just $32 million, a much slimmer debut than Fury Road‘s own $45 million (which didn’t even have the boost of a holiday weekend behind it). Likewise, Garfield came in slightly under at $31.1 million, meaning it has no chance of recapturing the magic of the Super Mario Bros. from last year.

All in all, the dual disappointment means that 2024 marks the lowest-grossing Memorial Day weekend since 1995 — excluding 2020 when theaters weren’t even open, of course. Don’t lay the blame solely on Furiosa and Garfield’s doormats, though, as the main culprit for this cinematic calamity is arguably the MCU.

The MCU just failed to kick off summer the right way for the first time since 2009 41161i

It’s not just Furiosa and Garfield that are struggling to fill seats, however, as even Barbie‘s own Ryan Gosling couldn’t convince enough people to go see The Fall Guy to prevent it from flopping earlier in May. So why are ticket sales slipping across the board? Maybe that’s something to do with the fact that this is the first year since 2009 that Marvel Studios hasn’t released a movie to get the summer cinema season going.

Again excluding 2020, the MCU has offered up a major May release every single year since the 2010s began… Until now. Thanks to the 2023 strikes massively holding up the studio’s slate of projects, Marvel only has the one movie coming out this year, that being this July’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Even in recent years, when Marvel Fever has cooled, the franchise’s May movies have earned big bucks — see 2022’s Doctor Strange 2 ($955 million) and 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3 ($845 million).

Next year should be business of usual, thankfully, with Thunderbolts* scheduled for May 5, 2024, so with any luck this Memorial Day disaster will turn out to be a one-off. Maybe it’s not fair to say the MCU carries cinema on its back anymore, like in the 2010s, but clearly the box office still needs it to give it a boost.

Which blockbuster is worthy of the world's most coveted commercial spot?]]>
<![CDATA[

Few events draw the attention of rs quite like the Super Bowl. So popular is the annual football game (last year drew in over one billion viewers) that rs are willing to fork out millions upon millions to score a place amongst the coveted commercial breaks. The film industry is no different, with the world’s biggest production companies delivering trailers for the hottest items on the movies on the calendar.

In 2023, the Super Bowl hosted trailers for blockbusters like The Flash, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Guardians of the Galaxy 3, but this year seems poised to go even bigger. As the 58th Super Bowl prepares to take over screens and eyeballs on Feb. 11, 2024, here are the 10 movie trailers or teasers we hope get a spot on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

A Super Bowl trailer for Deadpool 3 seems to be all but guaranteed after multiple reports that the much-anticipated threequel is confirmed to appear during the event. Whether this will be a teaser or a full-length trailer remains unknown, but the July release date for Deadpool 3 places it within a fruitful promotional period. Deadpool 3 will see Ryan Reynolds reprise his role as the titular anti-hero opposite Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

A Quiet Place: Day One 2o6t3c

Following the franchise train, fans would love to see a trailer for the instalment of A Quiet Place, subtitled Day One. The John Krasinski-directed prequel will take place on the first day of the arrival of the sound-hunting aliens who plunged the world into an apocalypse. Lupita Nyong’o and Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn star in the film, set for release in June.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire 2k5956

Multiple pundits have predicted that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, will deliver a full-length trailer during the Super Bowl. Bill Murray and Paul Rudd will return to the iconic supernatural franchise, which will premiere on Mar. 22. The comedy was originally set for release late last year, but the delay puts it squarely in Super Bowl contention.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 425m38

Also benefiting from a shifted premiere date is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The film, which stars Millie Bobby Brown, will be released earlier than projected in March, just weeks after Super Bowl 58. The monster crossover movie is expected to be one of the year’s biggest, since 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong became a breakout critical and box office success.

Inside Out 2 2tn73

While Pixar’s history with sequels has been somewhat contentious (ahem, Cars 2), the animation studio might look to defy the sophomore slump with Inside Out 2. This is arguably the most anticipated animated release on the 2024 calendar, boasting the return of Amy Poehler and Tony Hale, and with Maya Hawke as the new emotion of Anxiety. We’ve already seen a brief teaser, but the Super Bowl could play host to a full-length trailer.

Despicable Me 4 1q6g6m

https://youtu.be/74RIFFCiQDk?si=g5k6LyO5nL3OaI1d

2024 looks to be a truly animated year, with Despicable Me poised to further expand its universe with a fourth instalment premiering in July. Since the franchise has brought in well over $4 billion over the course of the first three films (the highest-ever for an animated franchise), promoters needn’t worry too much about the Super Bowl’s eye-watering price tag.

Bad Boys 4 553c2u

Bad Boys for Life

We’re just months out from the July premiere of Bad Boys 4, but we’ve yet to see any promotional material for the buddy cop film. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are on board to reprise their roles as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, and the years-long wait since 2020’s Bad Boys For Life makes the buzz reach fever pitch.

The Garfield Movie 1d3gt

2024 will be home to animated emotions, big-nosed supervillains, and — as is the case for The Garfield Movie — cats with a case of the Mondays. Chris Pratt will return to the recording booth (as if the Mario backlash wasn’t enough) to voice the titular feline, with Samuel L. Jackson also attached. We’ve already seen a brief trailer for the movie, but its May release date means we’re poised for an even closer look.

Wicked: Part One 6b341y

Rumours have been swirling that a trailer for 2024’s buzziest musical, Wicked: Part One, is imminent, and where better to debut it than the Super Bowl? While the musical theatre adaptation is still a way off (set for release in November), its co-lead star Ariana Grande has dropped new music in recent weeks, so it might be wise for executives to capitalise on the fanfare during the Super Bowl. It would mark the first glimpse of Wicked since its announcement in 2016.

Kung Fu Panda 4 5c5i39

Premiering less than a month after the Super Bowl, Kung Fu Panda 4 is well-placed for a slot during the event. Audiences did get an official trailer for the crime-fighting animation last month, but a closer look at the returning Furious Five might just make Jack Black’s Po the most-watched panda in history.

Grab a plate of lasagna and settle into your favorite spot!]]>
<![CDATA[

Garfield, the lasagna-loving orange tabby with an insatiable appetite and the cutest butt, is set to make a triumphant return to bless our screens in 2024, ed by his questionable canine companion, Odie, of course.

Crafted by Jim Davis and initially introduced in 1976, Garfield transitioned to nationwide syndication in 1978, becoming the beloved character we know today. Since then, this lazy yet cynically charming cat has reigned over our hearts, as all orange cats do!

What enhances the appeal of this delightful feline’s adventures is not only his charm but also the absence of any social or political commentary in the strips. After all, who among us doesn’t resonate with Garfield’s penchant for lazing, and his Monday blues? His carefree adventures on languid afternoons and never-ending quest for the perfect place to slumber offer a much-needed diversion from our daily schedules.

Infused with his sarcastic wit, clever remarks, and undeniable cuteness, Garfield has seamlessly cemented its status as an iconic source of comic strip joy. Once the holder of the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip, Garfield has been delighting audiences for an impressive 45 years.

However, this lasagna-loving cat’s legacy extends beyond the comic strip realm, boasting 5 movies, 3 TV shows, and 12 Primetime Emmy Specials. As we eagerly await the return of our favorite indoor cat in a new outdoor escapade, let’s take a moment to indulge in the best Garfield movies, TV shows, and specials that have left a lasting paw print on our hearts.

TV Series 56o4x

1. Garfield and Friends (1988-1994) h5l25

Where to watch: Peacock

Aired on CBS as part of its Saturday morning children’s lineup, Garfield and Friends features animated storylines adapted from the comic strip Garfield and Davis’s other comic strip U.S. Acres. Spanning a total of 7 seasons and 121 episodes, it is a purr-fectly delightful binge-watch buffet. The show brilliantly turns mundane moments into comedy gold and features the perpetually puzzled pooch Odie and the forever clueless owner Jon Arbuckle, by Garfield’s side.

2. The Garfield Show (2009-2016) 5v4f4f

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video (4 seasons), Netflix (2 seasons)

The Garfield Show found its way to US television in Nov. 2009 and ran for 5 seasons with 107 episodes. It is set in a different universe than Garfield and Friends and transforms Garfield into a talking character. It features many new characters like Vito, an Italian chef, Harry, a stray cat and nemesis to Garfield, and Squeak, Garfield’s mouse friend who lives in Jon’s house.

The show also makes Liz a main character and reestablishes Arlene as Garfield’s potential love interest. The eclectic crew of pals—Odie, Garfield, and Nermal, “the world’s cutest kitten” together navigate the world with mischief on their menu.

3. Garfield Originals (2019-2020) x184m

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

The 2D animated short series was the most recent addition to the franchise before the 2024 film was announced. Though only consisting of 24 episodes composed of 120 short films of thirty seconds each, Garfield Originals offers a fresh take on the beloved Garfield character. The series premiered in on December 6, 2019, with 12 episodes, with the remaining episodes released on June 17, 2020. Despite not being a typical “series,” Garfield Originals is a ticket to a laughter-filled adventure featuring humor that resonates with the new-age audience.

Movies h5x4k

1. Garfield: The Movie (2004) 1g1g6y

Where to watch: Disney Plus and Hulu

With Garfield: The Movie, the cutest cat in town had a spectacular big-screen debut in the summer of 2004. The movie introduces viewers to Liz and the neighborhood cats, Nermal and Arlene, while essentially narrating the beginning of Garfield’s travels and the entry of Odie into the family.

The story begins with our brash and gregarious protagonist becoming entangled in a conspiracy involving Odie, and a shady TV host named Happy Chapman who intends to send the gullible puppy to the pound. Garfield then sets out to rescue Odie, creating a cinematic treat that’s equal parts funny and heartwarming.

2. Garfield’s Fun Fest (2008) 5n2v5o

Where to watch: Tubi

Three direct-to-video films were released after Garfield: The Movie and its sequel, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, came out in 2006. The second of the three is Garfield’s Fun Fest, which is a sequel to 2007’s Garfield Gets Real (2007).

The 30th annual Fun Fest, a carnival-style celebration honoring the funniest comic strip character, is the focal point of the plot of Garfield’s Fun Fest. Garfield downplays altering his comic routine of 29 years for this year’s Annual Fun Fest dance with Arlene. But when Arlene teams up with Ramone, everything falls apart in Garfield’s world. His effort at a new act fails miserably, and Ramone’s heckling breaks his heart and humbles him. As Garfield discovers the value of staying true to who he is, the film blends humor, friendship, and a hint of wisdom.

Specials 5k5x2q

1. Garfield’s Halloween Adventure (1985) 2q5u3k

https://youtu.be/4OMlaUnkY1w?si=eVD3xAEkRkhcdT3w

Where to watch: Peacock

In the spooky special Garfield’s Halloween Adventure, Garfield and Odie go on a trick-or-treating adventure that turns out to be more than they imagined. They spend the night dressed as pirates and have an eerie encounter with an enigmatic elderly man. This animated spectacular, full of humor and just the right amount of spookiness, perfectly captures the spirit of Halloween humor. It’s a timeless treat for all ages, proving that even a ghostly adventure can’t keep a good cat down. It originally aired on CBS on Oct. 30, 1985, and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program.

2. Garfield’s Babes and Bullets (1989) 6y6g4m

Where to watch: Peacock

Garfield’s Babes and Bullets is a detective parody, reimagining Garfield as a private detective named Sam Spayed attempting to solve the murder mystery of Professor O’Tabby, who apparently drove off a clifftop road. The animated special features a film noir atmosphere with a dash of suspense and a heap of humor. If you didn’t already guess it, our tubby tabby proves his knack for wisecracks and solves the case. The 24-minute special is a cat-tastic blend of innovation and familiarity.

3. A Garfield Christmas (1987) 6z2as

Where to watch: Peacock

The festive season gets a feline twist in this Christmas special as Garfield, Odie, and Jon head to the Arbuckle family farm for the holiday season. Davis, who wrote the teleplay, cited A Garfield Christmas as semi-autobiographical as the story captures Garfield learning the real meaning of Christmas, which is taken from Davis’ own experience. Every scene, from Odie’s doggie caroling to Garfield’s search for the ideal gift, combines sentimentality and humor, making up for a purr-fect Christmas watch.

4. Garfield: His 9 Lives (1988) 4d5hp

Where to watch: Peacock

All cats have nine lives, and so does Garfield. Six of the ten sections of Jim Davis’ 1984 collection of illustrated short stories, which features the nine lives of Garfield, are adapted for this delightful 48-minute journey. It delves into Garfield’s previous incarnations, ranging from a spoiled pet of a pharaoh, to a disastrous science experiment. The clever narrative is both intelligent and hilarious as the 10 segments of the special explain how Garfield’s previous lives influenced different facets of his personality. It also spills the beans on his fear of the veterinarian, so you won’t want to miss this one!

5. Garfield on the Town (1983) 31l4s

https://youtu.be/eJuryCIxW3Y?si=HLnnHfIA2fTeGrV4

Where to watch: Peacock

Garfield on the Town is the first special in the franchise to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program. In the story, our plump hero gets lost downtown after unintentionally falling out of Jon’s car and gets a pawse from the familiar to explore the cityscape. As he continues his urban escapades, we also learn about Garfield’s life before getting into Jon’s household as he is reunited with his mother Sonja in an abandoned Italian restaurant, from where he picked up his love of lasagna. Sounds intriguing? His city adventures in Garfield on the Town leave viewers beaming from ear to ear.

48 years from now, it could be *your* cat hanging from suction cups on the back windows of minivans.]]>
<![CDATA[

Shedding the voice of Bill Murray like a snake sheds its skin, Garfield returns to the big screen next year, just as fat, orange, and lovably misanthropic as ever. And with your help, he won’t have to do it alone.

Does your cat despise Mondays? Have you ever fed them an entire lasagna, only to realize at a primal level that deep down, what they really wanted was for you to prepare and feed them a second lasagna? Have they ever lured a dog onto a raised surface, then pushed them off of it, cold eyes following the creature’s descent to injury – perhaps even the clawing nothingness of oblivion?

If so, they’d make a great fit for The Garfield Movie’s ad campaign. At least that’s the word around the offices at Sony Pictures Entertainment, where word has come down that any cat or dog of sufficient camera-readiness will – no, must – be folded into the ad campaign for the movie.

The process couldn’t be simpler. At the tail end of the first trailer for 2024’s The Garfield Movie, a QR code pops up in the bottom right corner of the screen. Scan it, and you’ll be taken to a submissions page, where pleasant, easy-to-follow instructions will teach you how to make your cat (or dog!) a star. Ideally, submissions will be shot in 720p minimum, with clear audio, good lighting, and a lack of brand logos or copyrighted images. Sadly, the video can’t be more than a minute long, no matter how long your cat’s Aristocrats joke goes.

Once these criteria have been met, pet owners are encouraged to share their social media handles and the names of any animals included in the video. An indeterminate number of submissions will be edited into future ads for this, the latest blockbuster adaptation of a comic strip about a cat eating things.

The Garfield Movie is currently scheduled for release May 24, 2024. Because the world is being written by an AI that’s slowly losing power, Garfield is voiced by Chris Pratt.

Any day without lasagna is a bad day.]]>
<![CDATA[

The official trailer for The Garfield Movie is finally at our disposal, with everybody’s favorite lasagna-loving feline perfectly reiterating exactly why he despises Mondays. But the question shouldn’t be why he hates Mondays, a better question would simply be — who doesn’t?

Yep, that’s right, I said it — Mondays suck. And, if you don’t take our word for it, just ask Garfield himself. OK, maybe Garfield can’t actually talk, but that doesn’t mean we don’t understand every single thought he has — especially when it comes to the most dreaded day of the week. Garfield’s well documented hatred for Mondays isn’t too much of a surprise, of course, seeing as he maintains plenty of qualities which echo his iconic nature — including being cynical, lazy, and grumpy.

And yet, it’s his complete disdain for Mondays which has led his fans to wonder why exactly this feline hates the first day of the week so much. So, let’s dive in and analyze this aforementioned hate and how it got to be where it is.

So, why does Garfield hate Mondays? 4t432k

Much like with any topic, there have been a plethora of theories throughout the years as to why exactly Garfield cannot stand Mondays. One popular theory, which has long been discussed and examined on Reddit, points at the possibility of Garfield hating Mondays because a large number of Italian restaurants are closed on Mondays after handling the mad rush during the weekend. As a result, Garfield cannot enjoy a healthy dose of fresh, warm lasagna if the Italian restaurants close to him are shut.

Another theory which has been highlighted over the years is that Garfield hates Mondays because his owner, Jon Arbuckle, has to start the week all over again and head off to work, while Garfield is left home alone. Honestly, this theory isn’t even far-fetched in the slightest, seeing as most cats probably wait around for their owner to return from work.

However, cartoonist and creator Jim Davis himself insisted back in a 2014 interview that Garfield specifically hates every day because of his ever-lasting boredom, but Mondays are especially horrid because Garfield’s same old dull lifestyle seemingly restarts each Monday. Perhaps to fix his issues with Mondays, Garfield should order a large portion of lasagna on Friday, and make it last all the way to Monday. But who are we kidding? That lasagna wouldn’t last more than an hour or two.

Fresh off his latest MCU appearance, Samuel L. Jackson is venturing back into the world of animation.

Jackson is one of the biggest selling points in the modern MCU, as the OG Avengers — the Chris Evans, RDJs, and Scarlett Johanssons — slowly file out, making space for the next era of superheroes. That new era is still headed by Nick Fury himself, as he stars alongside Brie Larson and Emilia Clarke and welcomes exciting new heroes into the fold.

SLJ became almost instantly synonymous with the character of Nick Fury, largely because the man elevates any project he’s attached to. In cases like Secret Invasion, that fact makes you wonder just what it would look like without a powerhouse like Jackson involved. His resume is lined with examples of projects that may have been sub-par without Jackson’s talent, so those releases that still manage to be sub-par are, in their own way, impressive.

Unfortunately for fans of Garfield, the most recent attempt to profit off the grouchy orange feline looks prepped to fall into the latter camp. The first trailer for The Garfield Movie, for that is the forthcoming film’s newly-updated title, showcases some lovely visuals, but a thoroughly flat-looking plot. Its got plenty of potential, of course, with so many talented names attached, but for now the flick looks poised to Secret Invasion on Jackson’s shortlist of worst releases.

Don’t worry, Jackson didn’t pull a Bill Murray with The Garfield Movie; he’s not set to appear in the title role — that honor (?) goes to Chris Pratt — but he will appear as one of the lead characters in 2024’s fresh attempt; Mr. Jackson was tapped to portray Garfield’s father, Vic. The beefy cat shares little in common (at least physically) with his portly, food-loving kid, but the film appears poised to examine their relationship in detail.

Jackson’s character looks to be one of the leading roles in The Garfield Movie. The film tells the title character’s story from the start, but appears to zero in on his relationship with his father, and the journey toward connecting again. With the likes of Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, and two of the hilarious minds behind The Emperor’s New Groove attached, it really could be a sure-fire hit, but only time will tell.

The Garfield Movie is slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
