Crunchyroll announced today the English SimulDub schedule for The Rising of the Shield Hero season 2. The new season, which premiered on Crunchyroll and Funimation in Japanese audio with English subtitles in April, will start receiving weekly dubbed episodes this Wednesday, May 4 at 5pm ET on both Crunchyroll and Funimation. 

Crunchyroll also revealed the English cast for the episodes, which were directed by Steve Staley. While most of the announced cast will be reprising their roles, the lead role of Naofumi Iwatani has ed from Billy Kametz to Wonder Egg Priorty’s Stephen Fu. The recasting follows Kametz’s announcement on his personal YouTube channel last week that he would be stepping away from voice acting following a stage IV colon cancer diagnosis.

Returning cast include Erica Mendez (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as the heroine Raphtalia, and Brianna Knickerbocker (The Seven Deadly Sins) as the filolial queen Filo. Amber Lee Connors (Komi Can’t Communicate) aslo returns to voice Ost Horai, alongside Dawn M. Bennet (Black Clover) as Eclair Seaetto, and Sean Chiplock (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) as Kyo Ethnina.

The Rising of the Shield Hero’s long-awaited sequel season has been met with a mixed reaction from fans, with many disappointed by the current season’s pacing and direction. Masato Jinbo took over as director, his first time in the position for a full season, and Kinema Citrus began working alongside South Korean animation studio DR Movie (animators behind parts of Avatar: The Last Airbender and other Nickelodeon series). 

Fans don’t need to worry though. A third season was announced alongside season 2 back in 2019.

The Rising of the Shield Hero is an anime adaptation of Aneko Yusagi’s light novel series. The dark fantasy isekai follows Naofumi Iwatani when he’s transported into a fantasy world as a Cardinal Hero, tasked with fighting monsters from other dimensions called Waves. As a Cardinal Hero, Naofumi wields one of four legendary weapons, the shield, lending to his title as Shield Hero. It’s the only defensive weapon too, which marks him as a standout from the rest of his cohort. 

Yusagi began working on the series as a web novel in 2015, and in 2013 it was revamped as an expanded light novel series. Since then, The Rising of the Shield Hero has received 22 volumes and counting, published in North America by One Peace Books. In addition, the series has received various comedic light novels and manga spin-offs, while Aiya Kyū has adapted the series into manga since 2014. Kinema Citrus’s anime adaptation first premiered in 2019.

Some important changes accompany the 13-episode sequel season. Kinema Citrus is ed by South Korean animation studio DR Movie to assist in production, while Masato Jinbo, a storyboard artist for Laid-Back Camp’s two seasons and director of its spin-off short series Room Camp, has assumed the role of director on season two. DR Movie has several original productions; the studio is perhaps best known for its work on Nickelodeon’s famed Avatar: The Last Airbender, animating 19 of the show’s 61 episodes.

Other cast and crew have returned for the new season, including English Made in Abyss composer Kevin Penkin. And season two’s premiere episode makes a strong impression, showing off the crew’s individual talents in narrative plotting, fight choreography, and, most importantly, culinary animation.

Crunchyroll revealed today a new trailer for The Rising of the Shield Hero season two, along with a stunning new visual. Check out the latest on the series leading the Spring 2022 anime season as the most anticipated show on MyAnimeList’s — suring even Chainsaw Man.

Based on the novels by Aneko Yusagi, the dark-fantasy isekai series is in production at the South Korean studio DR Movie, a subsidiary of Madhouse after Kineme Citrus animated season one. Masato Jinbo will direct the new season, with Masato Jinbo on as Character Designer and music by Kevin Penkin. 

Jpop group MADKID will perform the season’s opening theme, “Bring Back,” and idol Chiai Fujikawa will perform the song “Yuzurenai” as the ending theme. 

Kana Hanazawa was also announced as a new cast member. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Tokyo Ghoul actress will voice the new character Ost Horai.
